Dear Students, Parents and Staff,
We are halfway through the 3rd quarter already and SPRING
is just around the corner. Please keep monitoring your child’s
grades in Infinite Campus(IC) and talk with teachers if you
have questions or concerns. We want our students to finish this
term strong and have a positive start to the 4th quarter. Also, thank you to
those parents who attended the February Parent Teacher Conferences!
We have Spring Break starting March 19th- March 27th. In April, our students in
grades 6-8 will be taking the Wisconsin Forward Exam. Watch for information in
the near future regarding the testing and the dates each grade level will be
testing. If possible, please avoid scheduling appointments on testing days so
your child will not need to miss additional class time to complete make-up
testing.
Think Spring!

Footloose:
RMS/Catalyst students involved in the musical are working hard to perfect their acting skills.
Rehearsals are now lasting until 5:30pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday each
week. Our performance will be on Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9 th starting at 7pm
each night. Tickets are $1 for students and $3 for adults. Set strike/clean-up will be on
Sunday the 10th with a cast party to follow.
Solo & Ensemble:
On Tuesday, February 23 ALL of the 7th and 8th grade choir students participated in our
local RMS/Catalyst solo and ensemble festival at the Ripon Middle School. Students
demonstrated their music skills in front of a judge and a room full of peers and parents as
they sang solos, duets, trios, and quartets. Students were judged on five categories:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
Tone quality (using good vowels and demonstrating good breath control)
Intonation (singing on pitch)
Balance (blending with the other members in the group/listening skills)
Technique (Showing good posture, correct diction, notes, and rhythms)
Expression (How did they interpret the song with use of dynamics, tempo, phrasing,
etc)
When the students were not performing they were still being evaluated. Students had to
demonstrate appropriate concert etiquette as well as use critical thinking and writing skills
to fill out critique forms for 15 other performances.
This event is an excellent opportunity for students to gain confidence in their abilities to sing
and read music. This event is a culminating evaluation of their year’s progress so far. The
need for the students to remember everything taught to them all year long is watched and
evaluated by other people, a big deal to a 12 and 13 year old students. Kudo’s to all!

Annual 8th Grade Tour of Excellence
As an enrichment activity, the 8th
grade students will be taking a field trip
to three area colleges on April 15th.
The trip is designed from the
comprehensive
school
counseling
th
model that sponsors the 8 grade SPEC
(Student and Parent Education/Career)
conferences.
Students will visit three prominent area
colleges and see for themselves the
opportunities that are available to
them.
If you have any questions about this
field trip please contact Mr. Arft.
WIAA Free Physicals for Athletes
Parents of seventh and eighth grade athletes
are asked to take note of a free physicals
clinic, which will be sponsored by Ripon
physicians in April. Initial physical exams for
sport competition must be done by the family
physician at the parent’s expense. A detailed
letter and green card will be sent home with
the students once the final date has been
scheduled. It is highly recommended that
students wear a t-shirt and shorts. Watch for
more information in the near future!
“Wall of Inspiration”
Builder's Club students are creating a
"Wall of Inspiration". Students are choosing
their favorite quotes or sayings to help
motivate their peers to achieve their
goals. Tiles will be placed in a central
location where students can observe the
wall for inspiration.
Congratulations to the Stellar Spellers!
Three Ripon students recently attended
the regional Scripps Spelling Bee in
Oshkosh. Theo Rauch (Catalyst), Jules
Messitte (RMS), and Jason Recheck (MPES)
represented our district. Jason came in at
ninth place out of 39, lasting until the sixth
round. Both Theo and Jules went out
during the third round. Congratulations to
our representatives!

Catalyst Charter Middle School held a Gallery Walk on Thursday, February 11th. Projects
highlighted included catapults designed by 6th grade students as well as a game board
which challenged directional writing skills. In addition science information was displayed such
as the periodic table and grouping of elements. The 7th graders shared their robotics projects
and information about global awareness. 8th graders collaborated to feature all that they
had learned about the American Revolutionary War. Our thanks to the businesses and
individuals who donated to help make the event a great success!

Digital
Learning
Day
provides
an
opportunity to collaborate with peers,
share ideas, try new digital tools, and
celebrate education innovation.
A
variety of technology tools are utilized
every day in the middle school
classrooms.
Sixth grade classrooms
explored Webquests about moon phases
in RMS, while 6th grade Catalyst students
used a TinkerCad program to create 3D
images to be printed on the MakerBot.
iMovie book commercials were created
in 7th grade Catalyst and digital Punnett
Square simulations were used in 7th grade
RMS science classes. An online graphing
calculator called Desmos was used during
an interactive lesson in RMS 8th grade,
and students in 8th grade Catalyst took
Sphero balls for a spin to simulate a
prototype activity for ocean research
devices. Art students were able to use
iPads to edit digital photos with Pixlr Photo
Editor. Tech Ed students used a program
called Autodesk Revit. The program can
simultaneously create 2D and 3D drawings
of architectural buildings. One of the
technology tools used in music is a
program called Mixcraft Pro Studio
6, which is used to record and notate
students’ original music. The guidance
counselor uses a program where students
develop individual learning plans on the
website called Career Locker, which was
developed in UW Madison. Career Locker
allows students in 6th - 8th grade to
explore personal interests, careers, and
develop a plan during and after high
school.
