TheArtofLesMiserables
DearEpiphany,
Formycollegegraduation,myparentstookKristinandmetothe
stageproductionofLesMiserablesinChicago.Iwascaptivated.
Afterseeingit,IreadVictorHugo’s1862novelthatinspiredthis
musical.Whatcapturedmyimagination,andIthinkinaway
movedmetothepriesthood,isthescenewhereMonsignorBienvenutookJeanValjeaninonestormyandcoldnight.Therewasno
doubtthatValjean’ssoulwasdarkandwounded.Therewasno
questionthathehadandwouldcontinuetomakedecisionsthat
thoughtnothingofhurtingothers.Andwhatshoneforthfromhis
eye,particularlyascapturedintherecentmovie,LesMiserables,is
thatsincelifewassounfairtohim,hecouldbeunfairtoothers.
That,afterall,wasthewayheperceivedtheworldtowork.
So,aftereatingtheMonsignor’sfoodandwarminghimselfthrough
thenight,Valjeanlootedtherectoryofitssilverand led.Hewas
caughtquickly,notbecauseoftheMonsignorsoundingthealarm,
butbecauseofValjean’slookand ilthandsuspicioussoul.Hewas
returnedtotheMonsignor’sresidence.There,asthepolicethrew
Valjeantotheground,makingtheiraccusation,theMonsignorwith
agracebiggerthantheocean,thankedthepoliceandthen,turning
toValjeansaid,“Iamsogladyoureturned.Youforgottotakethese
candlesticksaswell.”HehandedthemtoValjean.Theastounded
policewerethankedanddismissed,andthentheMonsignorwhisperedtoValjean,“YoursoulhasbeenredeemedforGod.”
Thiswasn’tfair.Itwassimplynotfair!TheruleoflifethatValjean
hadlivedby,thathewouldtreattheworldasithadtreatedhim,
hunginthebalance.TheMonsignorwithonefellswoop lipped
Valjean’slifeonhishead,withoutpullingitfromthecontextofhis
shoulders.Iflifeisaquidproquo,thenitmustbeplayednot
againstthesmallnessofhumanity,butthegreatnessofGod.
Valjeanthrewhimselfbeforethealtarandprayed.Morethanthat,
heimploredandcriedandscreamedatGodandGodwasthere.A
covenantwasironedout,andfromthewealthofthatsilver,Valjean
builtanempire,apro itableempirethatimpactedmany,manypeopleinapracticalandgoodway. con nued... ThisscenewasaKingdomofGod“aha”momentforme.Thisis
howGodisandworksandwishestheworldtobe.Issilverthe
point?Weknowitnottobe.Butwithoutknowingtherealpoint,
silverremainsourmeasureoffairness,ormoreclearlyseen,silver
remainsthemeasureofthequidproquoinaworldthatisn’tfairat
all.Thisworldthenismeanandbrutishandhard.
Theparablethatjumpstomindisthatofthe“LaborersintheVineyard”(Matthew20).Laborerswerehiredinthemorningforadaily
wageagreedtobeonedenarius.Morewerehiredat9:00AM,then
noon,andagainat3:00PMand inallyanothergroupat5:00PM.
Whenthewagesweredispersedandthosehiredearlyinthemorningsawthelatehiresbeingpaidonedenarius,theyexpectedtheir
wageswouldincrease.Yet,whenhandedtheirenvelopeitcontainedonlyonedenarius.Theycriedout,“Thisisnotfair!”Iagree.
Itisnotfairinaworldofquidproquo.Butthatisnotthereal
world.Thatisthesmallworldbuiltinthelimitedcontextofthe
humanmind;aperspectivethatalwaysendsthesameway…“it’s
notfair!”
ThekingdomwhereGodreignsisdifferent.Atthecenterofthe
KingdomofGodistherealityofJesusonthecross.Here,themost
innocentmantoeverlivediesanuncontesteddeathbythemost
brutalmeans.Yet,bythisdeathheshattersthefalsefairnessof
quidproquoand illsthevoidwithlove.Thistruthreturnsusto
theMonsignorandthecandlesticks.God’swaysaredifferent.God
hassomethingelseinmind.Godhasaperspectivethatisbroader
thanourown.Wedonotknowwhatfairis.Wearenotquiteclear
aboutGod’spurpose,andyetwhenwegetaglimpseofit,asIdid
throughtheworkofVictorHugo,itissocompellingandbeautifulI
feeldrawntosellallIhaveandbuythat ieldthatcontainstherarestoftreasures(Matt13:45-46).
LesMiserablestellsussomethingaboutwhatisreallyreal.Some
saywhatmakesgreatartgreatisthatitmimicslife.Otherssay
whatmakesgreatartgreatisthatittellsussomethingtrueabout
thehumancondition.Ibelievewhatmakesgreatartreallygreatis
thatittellsussomethingabouttheKingdomofGod.
GreatartisawindowintoGod’sworld.Itisafreegift,givennotas
ameasureofequity,butasameansoflove.ForGodsolovedthe
worldthatGodgaveHisonlysonthatweshouldhavelifeandhave
itabundantly.That’snotfair,andforthatIamthankful.

Lector.HealsoenjoysparticipatingintheMen’sministry.CoryisthePresidentofWashingtonCapitalManagement,aregisteredinvestmentadvisory irmwhichspecializesinmanagingfundsonbehalfofde inedbene itretirementtrusts.
BethClarkwasbaptizedintheMethodistChurchin
BremertonandjoinedEpiphanyParishinlate1993.She
wascon irmedherein1997andwasactive(including
serviceontheVestry)forseveralyears.Afterahiatus,
BethresumedattendingEpiphanyin2008withherchildrenHalClemons(15)andRubyClemons(8)whoboth
enjoybeingactiveintheEpiphanycommunity.Bethisa
graduateoftheUniversityofWashingtonSchoolofLaw
andpracticesatFosterPepperPLLCwhereshechairsthe
realestatepractice.BethisamemberoftheAltarGuildandhasservedon
Epiphany’sbuildingcommittee,ontheEpiphanySchool/EpiphanyParish
CampusCommitteeandforthepastyearinaninterimcapacityonthe
Vestry.
CarolineNormannwasraisedinMadrona,con irmed
andmarriedatEpiphany.Aftermanyyearsoflivingin
Florida,shereturnedtoSeattlein2008andhasbeena
regular8o’clockparishionerandactivewithseveralministriesthatincludetheAltarGuild,EucharisticMinisters,
andmonthlycommunionservicesatParkShoreand
HorizonHouse.AhappilyretiredattorneyforAtlantabasedSunTrustBanks,shenowdelightsinbeinghome
againinthePaci icNorthwestandagainbecomingpartof
thethrivingEpiphanycommunity.Hertwodaughters
andfourgrandchildrenliveintheSoutheast.
BillWurtshasbeenamemberofEpiphanysince2009.
HelivesinMadisonParkandpresentlyservesonthe
BoardofTrusteesofKentSchool,anEpiscopalprivate
schoolinConnecticutfromwhichhegraduatedpriorto
YaleUniversity.In1986BillfoundedWurts&Associates,
anindependentinstitutionalassetconsulting irmand
servesitasChairman.Healsoservesontheboardsofthe
NorthwestParkinson'sFoundationaswellastheGreater

YWCAEmergencyHousingandFoodBank.
EpiphanyParishhaspartneredwiththeYWCA
solongnoneofuscannowrememberexactly
whenthisrelationshipbegan—probablyinthe
yearswhenthelate,belovedWinnieHopkins
wasstillwithus.TheYprovidesemergencyand
transitionalhousingatseveralSeattlelocations,
includingtheEastCherryYinMadrona.Our
parishhelpssupporttheY’sfamiliesincrisisin
anumberofways.
Manyofyoudonatefood,gifts,andsuppliesthroughouttheyear.In
2012Epiphanyprovided54back-to-schoolbackpacksandschoolsupplies;40EasterBaskets;dozensofHalloweenpumpkins,carvingsets
andbagsofcandy;and33completeThanksgivingmeals.AtChristmas,
theparishadopted30familiesandprovidedmorethan100additional
gifts.
OneSaturdayamonthanEpiphanycleaningcrewscrubsanewlyvacantapartmentandstocksitwithyourdonationsofgentlyusedkitchenware,linens,andotherhouseholdbasics.Oneparishionerprovides
staplegroceryitemssothatnewtenantsdon’tfaceabarecupboard.
AnotherparishionerregularlyreadstochildrenatthedowntownY’s
Women’sandChildren’sDomesticViolenceShelter.
TheYrunsasmallfoodbankonceaweektoserveprimarilyitsresidentfamilies.CashyouplaceinthesmallbasketbeforeEucharisteach
Sundaysuppliesfreshproduceandeggs,whichEpiphanyvolunteers
purchaseanddelivertothefoodbankeachWednesdaymorning.The
parish’sgenerousresponsetolastyear’sHaveaHeartfundraiseralso
allowedustodonate$5000totheFoodBankatSt.Mary’s,anindependentnonpro itinSeattle’sCentralDistrictthatservesmorethan

In2013workbeginsonthenewYeslerTerracehousingproject,requiringtheYtorelocateitsfoodbanktotheCherryStreetfacility.The
Yisnowlookingforfundstorenovateasmallkitchenatthatsiteso
thattheycanalsoprovidehotsoupforfoodbankclients.
