Anne Frank
Anne Frank was the daughter of Otto and Edith Frank. They were a Jewish
family who lived in Germany.
In 1932 Adolf Hitler was in power in Germany. He did not like the Jews. He
blamed them for all of Germany’s problems.
Anne’s father decided it would be very dangerous to stay in Germany so he
moved his family to the Netherlands.
The Frank family set up a business in the Netherlands and for a while his
family were safe.
In 1940 Hitler invaded the Netherlands. He made all the Jewish people wear a
yellow star on their clothes to identify them. Many Jewish people were
arrested and their businesses were taken away from them. The Jewish people
started to fear for their lives.
The Frank family decided that they needed a place to hide. They hid in a secret
annex at 263 Prinsengracht, Amsterdam. They had several people that brought
them food and informed them of what was happening.
During their time in hiding Anne wrote a diary. She created an imaginary friend
called Kitty who she wrote to daily in her diary. These diaries have helped us to
learn about what happened to this family during the war.
In August 1944 they were discovered and by October Anne and her sister were
taken to Bergan-Belsen concentration camp. Thousands of Jewish people were
killed in concentration camps but Anne and her sister both became ill and died
of a disease called Typhus.
After the war Anne’s father who survived tried to find his daughters and
eventually found out that they had died. Otto Frank had Anne’s diaries
published to honour her life.
Since then her diaries have been translated into more than 50 languages.
During World War II over 5 million Jews were killed.
