From Our Associate Rabbi
Last month I had the privilege of joining a mission of rabbis from the Federation of Greater
MetroWest New Jersey to Israel. It was a whirlwind experience: I left on a Saturday night just
before midnight, arrived Sunday evening, and
was thrown right into programming in Jerusalem that didn’t stop until Thursday evening in
Tel Aviv. We saw many parts of the country
and met with many different people along the
way. This was not a sightseeing tour, but
rather, a “mission,” charged with engaging rabbis from our area with Israel, learning about
issues facing the state and the people today,
and meeting with people in different minority
communities. We also spent a day in Ofakim,
our MetroWest partnership town in the Negev,
in which we got to see first hand the difference
our federation makes in the lives of the people
there. We met with current and former members of Knesset and discussed some of the
challenges of being a “Jewish” state but also
being pluralistic and democratic. We met with
Israeli Jews of Ethiopian origin and discussed
the current state of race relations and minorities in Israel. We met with Druze clerics near
the border with Lebanon in the village of Horeif
(also a partnership village) and learned about
the life of the Druze so close to the border. We
also visited the areas in the Negev that were
hard hit during the war last summer, and saw
some of the equipment used to disarm rockets
and keep residents in the south safe.
framed in its opening and closing with a reminder of the “dream.” We got off the plane
and headed straight for the Herzl Museum in
Jerusalem. Herzl, a dreamer who worked tirelessly in a very difficult reality, never gave up
on his dream. He never lived to see it. He
sadly died well before any of the modern state
of Israel came to be. But, like the man who
plants a carob tree knowing it will take 70
years to bloom and he will never taste of his
fruits, Herzl planted the seeds anyway. He allowed himself to dream and simultaneously
worked towards making that dream a reality.
After a week of examining that reality, we
ended our program with a trip to the Hall of
Independence in Tel Aviv, in which David Ben
Gurion, years after Herzl planted those seeds,
saw them bloom on May 14, 1948, and declared the State of Israel into existence.
For me, this frame surrounds all that is Israel.
Israel is imperfect. Israel is still growing. There
are many challenges to being a state just shy
of seventy years old in the modern world. Yet
the dream is still alive and growing. And as
Herzl famously wrote, “If you will it, it is no
dream.” What I take away from too brief a
week in Israel is that there are challenges Israel faces and many things to overcome on the
road to blooming into the best country it can
be. But the seeds have been planted, and the
dream still frames everything that happens
there. And with that dream to guide us, we

Recognizing and Honoring
Our Legacy Society Members
As the first year of our participation in the Create a Jewish
Legacy program winds down this month, we are pleased
to announce two special events celebrating those individuals who have made legacy gifts to the Temple and
become members of the inaugural class of the TBAY
Legacy Society.
Our first event is the Recognition of Legacy Society Members and is part of the Friday, June 12 Shabbat Service,
which also includes the installation of Temple trustees
and Women’s League and Men’s Club officers and trustees for the coming year and the re-dedication of the
L’Dor VaDor Recognition Wall. Each Legacy Society
member will be thanked by name before the congregation
and will receive his or her Legacy Society membership
certificate from the bima. All are welcome to attend this
joyous occasion.
The second event is our first annual Legacy Society Recognition Brunch. The brunch is limited to TBAY Legacy
Society Members and is on Sunday, June 14 from 11:00
am to 1:00 pm.
There is still time to make a legacy gift this year and be
recognized and honored. If you are interested in becoming a member of our Legacy Society, but are unsure how
to make a legacy gift, please contact me.

Opportunities For
Congregants To Lead Services
The summer presents a great opportunity for our congregants to participate in services both by leading liturgical
sections and doing divrei Torah (a sermon/thoughts on
the weekly Torah or Haftorah portion). Preparatory help
is always available. Here are the various roles to be
taken on and some general guidelines.
•
•
Friday evenings: Lead services – give a sermon.
Sermons are not always linked to the weekly Torah
portion
Saturday mornings: Lead 1 or more sections of the
service: chant from the Torah, chant the Haftorah or
give a d’var Torah (a closer link to the weekly Torah
or Haftorah portion)
Guidelines for giving a Sermon or d’var Torah
Focus on only one topic. If you try to deal with the
entire portion, the message can get lost in the ocean
of Torah
Length is ten to twelve minutes maximum. Professor
Rabbi Neil Gillman taught his students that if you
can’t get your message across in 10 minutes for a
Shabbat d’var Torah, then your message will not get
across in a longer period of time.
If you are interested, please contact Rabbi Beyer, [email protected], for the liturgical sections and Rabbi
Mallach, [email protected], for the divrei Torah.

Early Childhood Program
We have had such a wonderful
school year. I am so blessed to see
all these children each day. I enjoy
watching the children play, learn
and interact with one another. A
few of the children entered our program in the Almost 2s class and a
few joined us this past September.
As they get ready to leave our program and head off to kindergarten, I know they have grown
into kind and loving children.
Dear Julie,
We wanted to let you know what a great day Hunter had on
his "class trip" to Israel. After coming back from Israel, he
then went to my school. All he could do was talk to my students about his incredible trip!! Riding a camel, going on
the airplane (and having a snack), seeing both the Negev
and Dead Sea were definitely some of the highlights of his
trip. He told everyone that he even put a message into the
wall asking for a cleaner world!!
One of the things I enjoy as an early childhood educator is
seeing the changes in the children from year to year. Much
more than just receiving the strong beginnings of a Jewish
education, they have learned about themselves as confident responsible school children. I will miss the smiles and
beautiful faces. I will miss all the help they gave me each
Shabbat, by helping me sing. I will miss hearing their
voices in the hallway.
We can't thank you and his teachers enough for such a
wonderful school year. Hunter has learned so much, is always happy to go to school and absolutely loves his teachers. Thank you for instilling the love of learning and exposing him to so many new and important concepts that he will
need as he begins kindergarten next year.
I want to share a letter I recently received. It sums up the
great program we have at TBAY.

In the ancient Temple in Jerusalem, the Levites formed
an orchestra, playing instruments and harmonizing to
heighten the prayer experience of the pilgrims who came
to worship at the holiest site. We, too, can bring music to

that much closer to God’s Holy Presence. But we can’t do

the antonyms for “clear” are fairly harmless and bring to
mind a fresh start or a clear path.

Caring Committee
This is a note written by the daughter of one of our visitees following a visit
from a member of the Caring Committee and myself. I omitted the names to
respect confidentiality. The committee member knew the daughter and her
father many years ago and renewed the acquaintance at our visit.

"I just got off the phone with my dad - he is SO HAPPY! He enjoyed
your and April's visit. He said you were so nice--gave him
hugs and kisses. I'm so appreciative for your visit and the Caring
Committee. Thanks for the Purim goodies, as well. What a mitzvah.
Thanks so much."
That says it all! Please let us know if you are aware of someone in the

WOMEN’S LEAGUE
Co-Presidents’ Message
Summer is fast approaching (yeah!) and our Women’s
League programming for this year has come to a close.
We’ve had some wonderful events and saw many new
faces this year. We want to thank everyone who planned,
coordinated and attended our events, fundraisers and
meetings and hope to see you again in the fall.
Thank you again to everyone on the Board and to all our
members for your hard work and support this past year. If
you would like to help with any programs or committees,
please call Lynn, Beth, Helen or April and we will be sure to
get you involved! Enjoy your summer and look for next
year’s membership mailing in July or August.
Our Donor Dinner, the last event of the year, was well attended and enjoyed by all. We had a delicious meal and
visited with friends while enjoying some soothing jazz entertainment. All had a lot of fun! Thank you to everyone
who worked so hard all year to earn their donor credit and
for supporting Women’s League. Many thanks to Esther
Avnet and Julie Scherzer for putting this evening together
and to Susan Teller for recording all our donor credit. Remember to buy vouchers and tribute cards over the summer to begin earning donor credit for next year’s event.

Men’s Club Softball: The season for the TBAY Men's

High School Holocaust Scholarships (May 28, 2015):
Each year our Men’s Club provides two scholarships to
Jonathan Dayton graduating students who have taken a
Holocaust-related course and written an essay on a topic
that we provide. Our program chairman, Bernie Flashberg,
and several of our Men’s Club trustees have reviewed
many student essays. This year’s winners are Daniel Bas
and Julia Rechner. The scholarships were presented at
the awards event on May 28, 2015 at the High School.
This year we also presented a special award to Mary
Cokeing, the Jonathan Dayton teacher who has supervised this program during the past 10 years. The two
award winners read their essays at TBAY at the conclusion of the Friday night services on May 15.
Men’s Club Dues – Last Notice: We are in the final
stage of wrapping up our current year dues campaign for
the 2014 /2015 fiscal year. Thank you to those who already joined. For others, please pay your $30 annual dues
