January 28th-Fun at Work Day
January 2010
Not many events of interest were found in history in the month of January. We can
remember the accomplishments of Paul Revere, Betsy Ross, Dr. Martin Luther
King, JR, and Benjamin Franklin who were all born in January but you may not
recognize Louis Braille who was responsible for the Braille Alphabet or Jacob
Grimm who wrote Grimm’s Fairy Tales who also had January Birthdays. January is
quite often a drab and dreary, cold and dark month. We need something to brighten
up the month. One way to do that is to not wait until January 24th for Compliment
Day but to make everyday Compliment Day.

Compliment Day or Month is a great opportunity to say something positive about
the people you come into contact with. Even people you don’t like has something
good about them. Take up the challenge, and find a compliment.
Compliment Day is celebrated by offering sincere compliments to people you
know. It is important that you are sincere. People will see right through insincerity,
and you will do more harm than good.
Another day to celebrate is January 23rd, National Pie Day. National Pie Day is a
special day that is set aside to bake and cook all of your favorite pies. On this day,
you are also encouraged to bake a few new pie recipes. And most importantly, it is
a day to eat pies!

Balance Problems
As people grow older, they may have difficulty with their balance. Nearly 8 million American adults report
having chronic problems with balance. An additional 2.4 million American adults report having a chronic
problem with dizziness alone.
Having good balance means being able to control and maintain your body’s position, whether you are moving or remaining still. An intact sense of balance helps you:

Walk without staggering

Get up from a chair without falling

Climb stairs without tripping
Good balance is important to help you get around, stay independent, and carry out daily activities.
Many people experience problems with their sense of balance as they get older. Disturbances of the inner ear
are the main cause. People feel unsteady, or as if they were moving, spinning, or floating. Vertigo, the
feeling that you or the things around you are spinning, is also a common symptom.
Balance disorders are one reason older people fall. Falls and fall-related injuries, such as hip fracture, can
have a serious impact on an older person’s life. If you fall, it could limit your activities or make it impossible
to live independently. Many people often become more isolated after a fall.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and prevention, more than one-third of adults ages 65 years
and older fall each year. Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths.
Balance problems can be caused by medicines, diseases of the circulatory system, diet, and lifestyle. You
should schedule an appointment with your doctor if you think you are having problems with your balance.
