Cut kitchen clutter 1 OFF THE BENCH It’s what goes on behind the scenes that keeps this busy room looking neat and tidy, writes Chelsea Clark functional and well-organised kitchen has always been high on the wish list for homeowners and renovators but the phenomenon of open-plan living and Australia’s passion for entertaining at home means super-stylish fittings and fixtures are now also a priority. “A well-organised kitchen is one that makes functional elements look like design elements, and integrates it all seamlessly,” More Freedom Kitchens, freedomkitchens.com.au; Ikea, ikea.com.au; The Good Guys Kitchens, thegoodguys.com.au/kitchen-design Page 1 of 4 Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) licenced copy AUS: 1300 1 SLICE NZ: 0800 1 SLICE “That extends from appliances through to storage solutions — everything should be smart as well as stylish. The kitchen is the heart of the home and also a hub for entertaining, so it’s important to get the design right for your lifestyle.” [email protected] Ref: 751712473 Daily Telegraph Saturday 8/04/2017 Page: Section: Region: Circulation: Type: Size: 11 Home Sydney, AU 233857 Capital City Daily 1,110.00 sq.cms. press clip 1 OFF THE BENCH grating appliances as the microwave into netry frees up bench e and reduces clutter. egration appeals to ple renovating their hens because it keeps gs sleek and avoids d space, when every iance has been idered,” Julie says. Picture: Freedom Kitchens 2 ON THE RACK While the island bench seems to be a gathering place for all sorts of clutter in many homes, a clever design and a few well-placed racks or shelves can also transform it into an organiser’s dream. Try attaching assorted racks to the side of the bench for storage of tea towels or even hanging baskets to collect everything that would otherwise be left on the bench — think keys, wallets, phones and school notes. No island? Try the same on the side of cabinetry. Ikea, variety stores such as Target and Kmart, and your local hardware store are a great place to find racks, shelves, hooks and baskets that look great but won’t break the bank. Picture: The Good Guys 4 DIVIDE & CONQUER certainly helped homeowners keep their main kitchen free of clutter but simply moving all of your bits and pieces to another space doesn’t really solve the problem. “A butler’s pantry should have lots of dividers to keep things organised, and the inclusion of drawers can hide things away nicely,” says Felicity. “You can avoid it looking messy by being able to access separate sections of the pantry individually, rather than exposing your whole pantry every time you need an item.” Picture: Freedom Kitchens Page 3 of 4 Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) licenced copy AUS: 1300 1 SLICE NZ: 0800 1 SLICE [email protected] Ref: 751712473 Daily Telegraph Saturday 8/04/2017 Page: Section: Region: Circulation: Type: Size: 11 Home Sydney, AU 233857 Capital City Daily 1,110.00 sq.cms. press clip RECLAIM SPACE Felicity says there are plenty of ways to get creative with storage. “A knife block can be wall mounted, the toaster can live on a pull-out shelf rather than the benchtop, and the kettle can be replaced with a boiling water tap,” she says. “Another benchtop space thief is the food processor. Because it’s heavy and bulky, the perfect place for this is within a bench cupboard that has a lift-up shelf. Extra clever points if you integrate access to an electrical socket, so it remains plugged in.” Picture: Darren James Interiors Page 4 of 4 Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) licenced copy AUS: 1300 1 SLICE NZ: 0800 1 SLICE 5 [email protected] Ref: 751712473
