For our second year partnering with UNI Office of Sustainability, students will be financially
supported to help out with Iowa’s largest week-long river clean-up sponsored by the DNR.
Spend the day in a canoe with other Iowa residents and give back to our local waters by
collecting debris, tires, and water samples. After a long day of paddling and picking up
trash, either hit up one of the informational sessions or hang out with fellow UNI students
or Iowa residents at the campgrounds. With delicious food catered by Hy-Vee and other
accommodations provided by DNR and UNI Outdoors, this trip is a fun and rewarding way
to give back. No canoeing experience is necessary. Rivers, campgrounds, and final plans will
not be released by the DNR until March; exact costs for students will be determined early in
the semester. If interested, stop by the UNI Outdoors Office where more information can be
provided!

Empire, where our trip will be based. At an elevation of 10,900 feet, Cusco is

to the Urubamba River for a nice Class III whitewater rafting trip. This day will
be purposefully low-exertion to help acclimatize to high altitude. The next six
days will be spent walking in the footsteps of the Incas before arriving near
the Machu Picchu archeological site. During this part of our journey we will be
accompanied by a certified English-speaking guide and pack animals for our
duffel bags. Meals will be provided at camps. Upon completion of our trek, we
will enjoy an evening in a hotel with the opportunity to soak in the thermal hot
springs near Aguas Calientes to soothe sore trekking muscles and admire the
great views above. The last full day of our adventure will include a visit to the
Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu! After a long visit at Machu Picchu we will
take a train back to Cusco for the evening before flying home the next day.
