Environmentalists are concerned about the impact and external costs that mines might have on the park as a tourist destination. (a) (i) Explain the factor of production under which uranium will be classified. [2] (ii) Describe the economic sectors in which mining and tourism will be operating. [4] (b) Explain opportunity cost and use the above extract to illustrate your answer. [7] (c) Examine whether the conservation of the Namib Naukluft Park, should be in the hands of government or private individuals. [7] [20] 2 Many countries such as Russia, that previously had a centrally planned economic system, changed to a mixed economic system. This included aspects of the free market economic system, bringing along with it major changes that neither the government nor the consumers could adapt to very easily. (a) What are the features of a centrally planned economic system. [6] (b) Explain why these centrally planned economies might have changed their economic system. [7] (c) Consider possible reasons why the government and the consumers might have had problems to adapt to the mixed economic system. [7] [20] 3 Vacancies for the positions of a taxi driver and a production engineer were advertised. (a) Outline six methods that might have been used to advertise the above vacancies.[6] (b) Explain the reasons that might have encouraged people to apply for the position of a taxi driver. [7] (c) Why might the production engineer earn higher wages than the taxi driver? [7] [20] 4 Millions of Namibian dollars were invested by a German company in the establishing of Ohorongo Cement. This increased the much needed supply of cement in Namibia. The government welcomed this investment but laid down laws to regulate the cement industry. (a) Outline reasons why the government might have welcomed this investment. [6] (b) Discuss why specialisation in cement production may benefit Ohorongo Cement and its employees. [7] (c) Why might the building industry have reacted positively to the establishment of Ohorongo Cement? The government urged the private sector to help to address this challenge and increase national income. (a) Describe the possible reasons why the unemployment rate in Namibia is high. [6] (b) Examine three reasons why the government measures national income. [7] (c) Apart from unemployment figures, discuss other factors which influence the standard of living in Namibia. [7] [20] 6 Governments are responsible for building and maintaining infrastructure. This provides vital job opportunities for workers, which can influence their saving and spending patterns. These projects are sometimes capital intensive. (a) (i) Describe infrastructure and name examples of infrastructure. (ii) Outline the possible benefits of making use of capital intensive methods.
