Arthur Conan Doyle
(22 May 1859 – 7 July 1930)
Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh,
Scotland. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh he briefly
practiced as a doctor.
His first short story was published in 1879 and his first novel in 1887, A Study in Scarlet.
2
He was the author of more than 50 books, including historical novels; the most famous is
The White Company, science fiction (The Lost World), domestic comedy, seafaring
adventures, poetry, military history and many other subjects.
In August of 1885 he married Louise Hawkins (1856-1906),
with whom he would have two children: daughter Mary Louise
(1889) and son Alleyne Kingsley (1892-1918). Louise died of
tuberculosis.
A year later, on 18 September 1907
Conan Doyle married Jean Blyth Leckie
(1872-1940) with whom he would have
three children: Denis (1909), Adrian
(1910), and Jean Lena Annette (1912).
In the autumn of 1929, in spite of having been diagnosed with Angina Pectoris, Conan
Doyle went off for his last tour to Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. He was in such
pain by the time he returned, that he had to be carried ashore.
3
Arthur Conan Doyle died on Monday, July 7, 1930, surrounded by
his family. His last words before departing for "the greatest and
most glorious adventure of all," were addressed to his wife. He
whispered, "You are wonderful."
