Applications for Fall Awards should be submitted by July 1st and applications for
Spring Awards should be submitted by December 1st. The Scholarship Committee
will meet in July for fall awards and December for spring awards. At that time, we
will be selecting students for awards. You will be notified of the committee’s
decision no later than 30 days after the application deadline.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
(Revised: November 2011)
Purpose:
To provide book awards to transfer students, freshmen and upperclassmen attending Jackson
State University from the Memphis Metropolitan area. This includes residents of:

Shelby, Tipton, and Fayette counties in Tennessee,

Desoto, Tate, Marshall and Tunica counties in Mississippi, and

Crittenden county in Arkansas.
Objective:
To provide financial assistance to currently enrolled undergraduate applicants. The Scholarship
Committee will make recommendations for financial assistance to the Memphis Chapter based
on the established guidelines for qualified undergraduates.
Deadlines:
Students must submit completed applications by July 1st for the Fall Semester and by December
1st for the Spring Semester. The Memphis Chapter will have book awards available no later than
July 31st for the Fall Semester and January 1st for the Spring Semester.
Available Financial Assistance
The Memphis Chapter will have at least two (2) $500 book awards available to assist students
every semester. Students desiring a book award must submit:

a completed application,

Two (2) letters of recommendation on letterhead,

a current transcript, and

Current proof of parent’s income for each academic year that financial
assistance is requested.
Students that have received awards during the Fall Semester should only submit a completed
application and current semester grades if applying for additional funds for the Spring
semester; however, a new application including current transcript, essay, two (2) letters of
recommendation, and proof of parents income will need to be submitted each Fall Semester for
ALL applicants.
CRITERIA FOR BOOK AWARDS
To receive a Book Award ($500):
1) Student must have a 2.5 GPA or above if he/she is entering or currently enrolled at
Jackson State University. A current transcript must be provided.
2) High school student or current JSU student must be enrolled at the University.
3) Student must write a 500 word essay on “Why I Chose Jackson State University to
Further My Education”.
4) Student must submit two (2) letters of recommendation typed on letterhead. It is
required that at least one letter is written by a teacher or JSU professor.
5) Student must provide proof of parent’s income. (Ex: W-2 form, tax return, or most
recent pay stub)
6) Students that have received awards during the Fall Semester should only submit a
completed application and current semester grades if applying for additional funds for
the Spring semester; however, a new application including current transcript, essay, two
(2) letters of recommendation, and proof of parent’s income will need to be submitted
each Fall Semester for ALL applicants.
To receive an Emergency Fund Award:
1) Student must explain in detail the type of emergency and proof of need/loss.
2) In the case of a natural or catastrophic disasters/incidents or family emergencies, funds
will be made available immediately.
