On The Right Track The Right Way is the Safe Way February 2013 Volume 101 Another Great PTI Driver The following letter was received by PTI’s New Castle, PA District Manager Michael Biel: Memorandum for Record Subject: Safety Recognition Attention: CSX Safety Committee New Castle Subdivision 6 February, 2013 New Castle Safety Team, On 22 January, 2013, I was performing duties as Freight Conductor on a recrew of the Q64121 from the Collinwood yard to New Castle. As a result of the “blizzard like” weather conditions, our crew and train was required to be relieved and re-crewed at the Parma yard to avoid hours of service violations. The crew boarded our PTI taxi at 1500 hours at Parma. The weather conditions, though improved, were still a concern of mine. Our PTI driver, King Midas, was on time and waiting for the crew. We briefly discussed the weather conditions and he understood potential hazards of the trip. While traveling east on I-480, at approximately 1530 hours, two vehicles collided with one another approximately five-hundred feet in front of our taxi. Mr. Midas displayed a keen awareness of the vehicles in traffic as well as keeping a safe distance from traffic in front of us, and as a result, was able to take safe, defensive driving measuring to avoid the accident and ensure the safety of the crew, himself, and other vehicles in the vicinity of the collision. Mr. Midas, in my opinion, circumvented a potential catastrophe and his actions and dedication to the safe transport of our crew reflect great credit upon himself as a driver in support of CSX operations. I am very thankful that Mr. Midas got my home safely on this day, and appreciate his dedication to crew safety. I would appreciate if this driver could be recognized, in some fashion, for his actions on this day. I offered my sincerest thanks and complimented his skill in avoiding this accident, and he appreciated my gratitude. If possible, maybe some kind of recognition from PTI or CSX would be appropriate. Please forward memorandum, as needed, to further express my thanks and record Mr. Midas’ performance. STEVE A. REIDER Freight Conductor CSX What does Stopping at an intersection Driving during construction zones Driving during adverse weather Driving in heavy traffic Nearing an entry and exit ramp Distracted drivers have in common? Answer: REAR END COLLISIONS. PTI will kick off an important initiative in the near future for all drivers to avoid being a statistic for rear-end collisions.
