Grade Summer Reading 2014
 PART ONE: Read Among the Hidden over the summer, and be prepared to
discuss in class. You will need a print or e-book copy for class discussion.
Luke has to stay inside…stay away from the windows…he’s a third child, and if the
Population Police find him, it will mean big trouble for everyone. When Luke sees
another pale face, peeking from behind the curtains of the new house nearby, he
realizes he is not the only one in hiding. And maybe he doesn’t have to live his
whole life this way!
 PART TWO: Read at least one of the following books for pleasure.
 Write a book report on one book, using the Book Report Guidelines
 Be prepared to discuss the book in class.
(It’s fine if your book has a different book cover. These are just examples)

Shackleton’s Stowaway - Victoria McKernan
This book is a fictionalized account of teenager Perce Blackbarrow, who slipped on board the Endurance, and
then found he was in for more than he bargained for when the ship and her crew were trapped by crushing ice.
Woods Runner – Gary Paulsen
Samuel has grown up in the Pennsylvania woods. When his parents are kidnapped, he sets out to find them,
traveling towards the British headquarters in New York City, in the midst of the American Revolution.

Book Report Guidelines
Your paper must be typed and double-spaced using 14 pt. Times New Roman font. Please remember that a
book's title may be underlined or written in italics.

First Paragraph - The first paragraph of your report should include the title of your book, the author, and
six to eight well-developed sentences that summarize the entire book – an overview.

Second Paragraph - An author creates a character by giving him/her certain attributes or qualities. The
reader gets to know the "personality" of each character (player) through physical description, the
actions of the character(s), and dialogue within the story. In a six to eight sentence paragraph,
describe important personality qualities of the main character(s). What do these qualities reveal about
the main character? If the character changes in the story, describe how and why he/she changed.

Third Paragraph - A good story always has a strong plot or series of related events that develop from
conflict(s). Through the use of specific details, write a six to eight sentence paragraph explaining the
most important or interesting event in the book. What was the conflict? What important actions are in
the plot? How was the conflict resolved?

Fourth Paragraph - In a six to eight sentence paragraph, explain the message that the author wants
the reader to have when the book is finished. Is there a "universal truth" or "message" in the story?
What did you learn from reading this book? For instance, does good often overcome evil? Are there
universal qualities of friendship?

Final Paragraph - In a six to eight sentence paragraph, share your thoughts on this book. Support your
opinion with specific references to the story when applicable.
