On December 15, the church bells will be ringing at 7:00 P.M. at our parish,
Saint Lawrence the Martyr, to mark the beginning of the novena Masses for
Simbang Gabi or “night worship.” An annual tradition that reflects the deep roots of
the religious culture of the Philippines, the “Simbang Gabi” is a time to hope, a time
to pray, and a time to eagerly wait for the coming of our Messiah.
The Filipino Association warmly invites everyone in our parish and school community to participate in
their annual tradition of nine-day Masses, celebration of community and family. The novena Masses
start at 7:00 P.M. on December 15-16, 19-23; at 5:00 P.M. on December 17, Saturday; and 6:00 P.M.,
Sunday, December 18. A time for fun fellowship happens after the nightly masses.
Come and join the rest of the community sponsor a novena Mass on any of the Simbang Gabi dates.

TO BEGIN ON NOVEMBER 27, 2011
At the invitation of Bishop McGrath, Father Ghislain C. Bazikila will celebrate a weekly Sunday Mass in ASL (American Sign Language). The first Mass will be on Sunday, November 27, at 1:30 PM, at Santa Teresa Parish, located at 794 Calero Avenue, San Jose, just off Blossom Hill Road in South San Jose. All are welcome to this Mass. It is Father Ghislain's intent to develop ongoing sacramental care for the deaf community of the Diocese. Father Ghislain is a priest of the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

WHAT ‐ WHY ‐ WHEN: THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL (taken from the Diocese of San Jose information on the revised Roman Missal) What has happened regarding a new English translation of the Mass? The English translation of the Mass has been revised so that the unique style of the Latin text is reflected in the English. Some elements of this style include:  Conciseness in addressing God  Noble tone  Concrete images  Repetition  Rhythmic highlighting of significant words The revised translation incorporates a heightened style of speech and grammar and includes more direct biblical references that are lost or more subtle in the previous translation, for example:  Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof…  From the rising of the sun to its setting… It also contains prayers for the observances of recently canonized saints, additional prefaces for the Eucharistic Prayers, additional Votive Masses and Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions, and some updated and revised rubrics (instructions) for the celebration of the Mass. This new English translation of the Mass affects both the words of the celebrant and the faithful and is being used in all English‐speaking countries, emphasizing the unity of the Church throughout the world. Why have these changes been made to the English translation of the Mass? Some history:  1969: Latin text of the Mass promulgated by Vatican.  1970: Vatican confirms the first English translation of the Order of Mass for use in the U.S.  1974: Vatican confirms the first English translation of the Sacramentary for use in the U.S.  1975: A new Latin text of the Mass is promulgated by the Vatican. This includes new prayers and rubrics.  1985: U.S. Bishops revise the English Sacramentary, including prayers of new saints.  2000: A third update to the Latin text is issued by the Vatican.  2001: Vatican issues Liturgiam Authenticam to assist with the translation from Latin to vernacular.  2008: Vatican confirms the new English translation of the Order of Mass for use in all English‐speaking countries. Because the English translation is being used throughout the world, the Vatican called for a closer reflection of the Latin style of ritual prayer. Seven significant characteristics of the Latin prayers are: 1. Stronger emphasis on the eschatological aspects of our faith in the prayer. That means that the prayers make the heavenly kingdom not only our goal in faith but also in syntax. In other words: The way we pray turns our focus to the kingdom. 2. Stronger and more detailed references to biblical images. 3. Stronger references to the writings of the Church fathers. 4. Broader use of the rich vocabulary of the Roman Rite to enrich our liturgical language. 5. More concrete images and anthropomorphic expressions, e.g., “in your pity give ear to our prayers.” 6. Exactness in vocabulary in order to heighten the catechetical and formational aspect of public prayer. 7. Concise and noble tone to make the speech we use in prayer different from our everyday speech. When did this happen? The date set by U.S. Bishops for all dioceses in the U.S. to begin using the new translation: First Sunday of Advent 2011 (November 27, 2011). The U.S. Bishops’ Web site (http://old.usccb.org/romanmissal/) is an excellent resource. The people's parts and the priest's parts along with the entire Order of Mass is available there for study, with side by side comparisons between the current and the new translations. Reflections on Advent and Christmas By: Archbishop Oscar Romero “If Christ became incarnate now and were a thirty‐year‐old man today, he could be here in the cathedral and we wouldn’t know him from the rest of you – a thirty‐year‐
old man, a peasant from Nazareth, here in the cathedral like any peasant from our countryside. The Son of God made flesh would be here and we wouldn’t know him – one completely like us.” “Advent is not just four weeks in which to prepare for Christmas. Advent is the church’s life. Advent is Christ’s presence... and will bring about God’s true reign, telling us, humanity, that Isaiah’s prophecy is now fulfilled: Emmanuel – God with us.” “Advent should admonish us to discover in each brother or sister that we greet, in each friend whose hand we shake, in each beggar who asks for bread, in each worker who wants to use the right to join a union, in each peasant who looks for work in the coffee groves, the face of Christ. Then it would not be possible to rob them, to cheat them, to deny them their rights. They are Christ, and whatever is done to them Christ will take as done to himself. This is what Advent is: Christ living among us.” When asked whether Archbishop Oscar Romero's canonization process would ever result in this martyr of the faith and his people becoming a saint, Pope Benedict replied: "I have no doubt he will be beatified. I know that the cause is proceeding well at the Congregation for the Cause of Saints". In our 2011 Advent, we are called to recognize that although Archbishop Romero’s’ context was different than ours, the structural sins that he addressed are basically similar, e.g. the exploitation of the poor, government corruption, socioeconomic inequality and the resultant poverty and homelessness, etc. May this recognition challenge us to let Archbishop Romero’s faith and courage guide our actions. I believe that the Christ who is born this season expects nothing less. Let’s give Him a present he won’t forget! Ministry

“Gift of Reading” Pre‐K and Academy students and families help kids get books for Christmas……… Each year the Pre‐K and the Academy join forces to support the Mercury News/RAFT annual Gift of Reading Program. New or very gently used children’s books for ages one to eighteen are collected at various locations in Santa Clara County. At the Saint Lawrence Education Center, the books are collected in the Pre‐K room, Monday through Friday between 7AM and 6PM, and will be collected until December 6th. Please consider and Give the Gift of Reading to children this Christmas season. First Grade loves Pumpkin Math! Pumpkins are a big part of autumn from Halloween jack‐o‐lanterns to Thanksgiving pumpkin pies. In Mrs. Gorham’s first grade they are also part of math. Students, with the help of many parent volunteers, worked in teams of two to estimate how much their pumpkin would weigh. They were heavier than the children imagined. After clearing it out they estimated how many pumpkin seeds were inside. Much to the surprise of the children there were many, many seeds inside, so they counted them in groups of ten. They also counted how many grooves ran from the top to the bottom of their pumpkins. “Estimating and counting are part of the first grade standards,” explained Mrs. Gorham, “but it is also great, messy fun!”

Her favorite subjects in college were Economics, History and Golf. She currently teaches Economics, Economics‐Z, Marketing/Careers, The Law, Accounting and Sociology She enjoys visiting the beach. Sr. Peggy runs the Academy’s Campus Store. Sr. Peggy is a Holy Names sister. If she could meet anyone dead or alive, Sr. Peggy would have liked to meet John F. Kennedy. If Sr. Peggy had a superpower, she would like the power to heal people. Her most difficult subject in school was mathematics. She would like to travel to Ireland. Sr. Peggy is a member of the Campus Ministry Advisory Team, the Discipline Board, and the Curriculum Committee. She does not like vegetables. Her favorite ride at Disneyland is “Pirates of the Caribbean.” She once won a trophy for tennis. Sr. Peggy is moderator of the Movie Club. Sr. Peggy was the coordinator for this year’s Thanksgiving Food Drive. She prefers hot tea over coffee. She played on the faculty bowling team “the Holy Rollers”. She enjoys a good murder mystery. NOCHES DE REFLEXION Tiempo de espera y de preparación
“ADVIENTO – LA PREPARACIÓN PARA LA NAVIDAD” La Comunidad Hispana de St. Lawrence the Martyr (San Lorenzo El
Mártir) te invita a dos pláticas cuyo tema central es el Adviento como
preparación para la Navidad. La primera plática será sobre el Adviento
que es un tiempo para dar nueva vida a nuestra alma mientras
esperamos con fe la celebración gozosa de la presencia real de Cristo
entre nosotros. La segunda platica hablará sobre el Sacramento de la
Reconciliación para prepáranos para celebrarlo como una preparación
de la Navidad.
Serán impartidas por el Padre Gerardo Menchaca y el Padre Ernesto Orci y se llevarán a cabo en la Parroquia de San Lorenzo,
1971 St. Lawrence Dr. Santa Clara, CA, el martes y miércoles, 29 y 30 de noviembre a las 7:00 pm.
El Padre Gerardo Menchaca, originario de México, fue ordenado como Sacerdote de nuestra Diócesis de San José en julio del 1995,
y actualmente es el vicario de la Catedral de San José y director espiritual en el seminario de San Patricio en Menlo
Park. Recientemente a regresado a San José después de estudios de espiritualidad en Roma.
El Padre Ernesto Orci, fue ordenado en mayo del 2009 y es el vicario y director de liturgia y de la comunidad hispana en la parroquia
de St. Lawrence the Martyr (San Lorenzo El Mártir).

La “Obra” de las apariciones de "Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe”
a San Juan Diego será presentada por la comunidad hispana

The Apparitions of “Our Lady of Guadalupe”
A drama on the Apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be presented
in Spanish by the Hispanic Community of Saint Lawrence the Martyr Church.
