U5 Mole Project

U5 Mole Project
Due Date: Monday, January
by this day or no credit will be given)
29th (This is a long term project.
Choose one of the following projects: BE
have a contest in class for the best project!
All projects must be turned
CREATIVE AND HAVE FUN!!
We will
a) Stuffed Mole –
1. Use the pattern provided to make a stuffed mole. Your mole should have a theme. Keep
in mind the examples from class when designing your mole.
2. You must include a dimensional analysis conversion of some type with your mole. that
uses the idea that the word “mole” means 6.02 x 1023 of anything. For example, if you
did a mole with the theme of “Moley Mouse” your conversion could be converting the
number of yearly visitor to Disneyland into moles:
14,000,000 people x
= 2.33 x 10-17 moles
3. Your analogy must contain at least one piece of information that you had to research.
b) Mole Analogy – See the back of this paper for an example
1. Your analogy must compare a mole of something to a quantity. For example, my
analogy on the back compared a mole of pennies to how many dollars every person in the
world would have.
2. You must show your calculations for how you arrived at your analogy.
3. You must include a picture of you doing something related to your analogy.
4. Your analogy must contain at least one piece of information that you had to research. For
example, in my analogy, I had to look up the population of the world.
**You must cite your reference.
5. It needs to be on an 8½ x 11 sheet of paper. It can only be ONE page! In order to get a
perfect score you could put it on PHOTO paper.
Scoring Rubric
 30 points – Shows a high level of effort and creativity
 25 points – Shows an average level of effort and creativity
 20 points – Show a minimal level of effort and creativity
 15 points – Incomplete
 0 points – Nothing turned in
Example Analogy
If you had a mole of pennies and you
evenly distributed them amongst the
7,058,971,290 people living in the world
today, each person would get
$852,815,481,600!!!
Work:
6.02 x 1023 pennies = 8.53 x 1013 pennies/person
7,058,971,290 people
8.53 x 1013 pennies x
person
1 dollar
= 8.53 x 1011 dollars/person
100 pennies
