Page 10 JCC Sharks Summer Swim Team Information Packet About the Sharks This is a fun-filled, competitive swim team open to boys and girls who have achieved at least a beginner level of swimming. The program is designed to bring out the best in each swimmer! Participants work hard to develop proficiency in each swim stroke. During the 7.5-week season, swimmers learn the tools and techniques necessary to take their swimming to the next level. Our Summer Swim Team program promotes physical health, friendship, positive self-esteem, dedication and teamwork. The team is designed to help each child develop physically, mentally and emotionally in a safe and caring environment. Eligibility Requirements In order to participate in the 2017 Sharks Summer Swim Team, participants must be either a JCC Member or a Summer Member. All participants must be able to swim at least 25 yards on their stomach or back. Swimmers must be 18 years of age or under by June 1, 2017. North Brandywine Swim League (NBSL) Eligibility Agreement: Each swim family must read the enclosed NBSL Eligibility Agreement, sign and return it. This is a NBSL mandate. Parent Meeting There will be a meeting for all swim team parents in the JCC Auditorium on Thursday, May 25th from 6:30pm-7:30pm. Communication Email · Almost all team information will be distributed via email. During the season, frequent emails will be sent to team members with up to date information and reminders of upcoming meets and events. Please contact Stephanie Kegelman ([email protected]) or Gail Brown ([email protected]) to add or change emails on our distribution list. Text Messaging · Occassionally information will need to be disseminated more rapidly than email can allow (ex: a thunderstorm rolls in at 5:15pm and we have to cancel practice). Having the ability to reach parents as quickly as possible is important for everyone’s safety as well. Please sign up for our text messaging system by texting @jccsharks to 81010. Team Snap · We will be managing meet attendance exclusively through Team Snap this summer! Coach Gail will invite all families to join our team. PLEASE ACCEPT THE INVITATION AND UPDATE YOUR PREFERENCES FOR ALL MEETS AND EVENTS. If your swimmer is not marked as “attending” a particular meet, they will not be entered in that meet. If you have last minute changes to your preferences, please email Gail Brown and Stephanie Kegelman. 1 JCC Sharks Summer Swim Team Information Packet PRACTICE SCHEDULE – Review Carefully! Please try to attend either morning or evening practice. Mechanics Fridays: INDOOR POOL - Friday Evenings: June 9th through July 14th While our coaches will work hard to improve stroke mechanics during morning and evening practices, we will not be limiting registration and will not necessarily be able to regulate lane numbers. There will be an emphasis on conditioning and building endurance during morning and evening practices. This Friday practice will focus exclusively on stroke mechanics and will be dedicated to a specific age group each week. Morning and evening practices for 6 & Unders will always have a heavy emphasis on stroke mechanics, which is why none of these sessions have been specifically dedicated to them. 4:30-5:45pm o June 9th & June 30th: 8 & Unders Only o June 16th & July 7th: 10 & Unders Only o June 23rd & July 14th: Swimmers Ages 12+ Only Notes · Practice on Monday, June 5th will be held in the INDOOR POOL. We ask that a representative from each family signup and volunteer for half of at least 3 meets (Signup Genius links will be provided). We are hosting the Invitational meet and need over 100 volunteers to be able to successfully run the event, therefore, we are also asking that one volunteer from each family help at our championship meets (some jobs can be done in advance of the event). · · · · Swim families unable to provide a volunteer for 3 meets throughout the course of the season must make a $50 per swimmer contribution to the JCC Sharks to offset the cost of hiring staff to fill these positions. Swim Families unable to provide a volunteer for one of our championship meets must make an additional $50 per swimmer contribution to the JCC Sharks to offset the cost of hiring staff to fill these positions. You will be billed at the end of the season if you do not contribute at the time of registration. Concessions donations are greatly appreciated! A list of Kosher items will be provided at the start of the season. Volunteer Opportunities: Age Group Lead Parent Gets to know the swimmers in their respective age groups. During meets, helps to gather those swimmers and line them up for their events. One parent for each age group is needed for the 6 & Under through 10 & Under age groups. This job could be specific to each meet, but it is preferable that age group parents commit to help the entire season. Head Timer Records all times from timers and gives time card to runner (home meets only). Lane Timer Stands with a stopwatch in a lane and times each swimmer in that lane. A timer from the opposing team will time each swimmer as well. Timers will compare times at the end of each race and average the times. Place Judge Visually determines where each swimmer places in each race (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) and fills out a place card. The place judge’s decision trumps the timer’s decision. Runner Walks between the starting blocks and scoring table to deliver time cards and place cards to the scorekeepers and ribbon writers (home meets only). 50/50 Raffle Sells raffle tickets to spectators on the pool deck (home meets only). Scorekeeper Collects time cards and place cards from runner and uses those results to determine how many points go to each team. Scorekeeper keeps a running total of points. Ribbon Writer As the results from each event come in, ribbon writers will handwrite in the details of each swimmer’s race on the back of the appropriate ribbon. There will be ribbon writers from the opposing team to write their own team’s ribbons. Stroke & Turn Judge Determines legality of strokes (some advanced training is required for this volunteer position). Announcer Announces each event and the names of the swimmers in each event to the spectators over the loudspeaker. Announces anything else that the coaches or reps may indicate. Starter Using the starting system, announces each event to the swimmers, calls the swimmers up to the blocks, makes sure timers are ready and presses the start button. Snack Bar Makes sure snack table is stocked, takes orders, collects money and serves food (home meets only). 4 JCC Sharks Summer Swim Team Information Packet North Brandywine Swim League 2017 General Code of Conduct Rules The purpose of the North Brandywine Swim League Code of Conduct is to establish standards of conduct that our swimmers, officials and parents are expected to uphold while participating in sanctioned swim meets of the NBSL. Siegel JCC – 101 Garden of Eden Road, Wilmington, DE 19803 8 NBSL Swimmer Eligibility Information 1. Swimmers on NBSL Teams must be members of their swim club on the same basis as non-swim team members. All swimmers must be active dues paying members of an NBSL League Pool. “Swim team only” memberships are not permitted, nor are memberships limited to the swim team season. An exception will be given to only those NBSL League Pools with summer camps existing before January 1, 2010 and are grandfathered by the NBSL. 2. For NBSL competitions, employees of a pool are not eligible to swim for that team unless they were a bona fide member of the pool during the previous season. An employee of one pool may swim for another pool provided they meet all eligibility requirements. (Example: Emily is a lifeguard at pool B and her family holds membership at pool A; Emily may swim for pool A. Emily may not swim for pool B) 3. Babysitters, houseguests and nannies are not eligible to swim for the NBSL. 4. The age group of a swimmer for the entire season is determined by his or her age as of June 1. Swimmers with birthdates on June 1 will be assumed to have reached the higher age. 5. A swimmer is eligible to compete so long as their age is less than 19 as of June 1 of the current year – i.e., a swimmer’s age must be 18 or under on June 1. 6. A swimmer must swim for only one Summer Recreational Swim League from May 1 – August 31 of the current season – example, swimmers may not swim for both Suburban and NBSL. Participation on a USA Swimming or YMCA short or long course competitive swim team shall not be considered a violation of this rule. 7. A swimmer is required to swim in at least two NBSL dual meets during the current season in order to participate in the NBSL Classic or Invitational meets. Exceptions to this rule must be approved by the NBSL. 8. A swimmer must swim for only one NBSL League Pool during the current swim season. A family may be represented on only one swim team during the season. Exceptions to this rule must be approved by the NBSL. 9. A swimmer who participates in any NBSL sanctioned event must have a parent’s or guardian’s signature on the Eligibility Agreement form prior to participating in an NBSL event. If you have a swimmer who is ineligible under these rules that you feel needs a special dispensation, please bring a formal request to the NBSL board, via the President, and it will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. 9 NBSL Swimmer Eligibility Agreement Eligibility Agreement I have read the NBSL Eligibility Rules provided to me by my league pool and acknowledge that any infraction of these rules will result in both individual and team penalties for the current season. Such penalties will include and not be limited to the following: · · Restriction of a swimmer from any NBSL sanctioned event during the current season Forfeiture of a meet for a team who swims an ineligible swimmer in dual meets/champs during the current season 1st Swimmer’s Name 1st Swimmer’s Birthdate 2nd Swimmer’s Name 2nd Swimmer’s Birthdate 3rd Swimmer’s Name 3rd Swimmer’s Birthdate 4th Swimmer’s Name 4th Swimmer’s Birthdate Signature of Parent/Guardian *Note: All swimmers must have at least one parent’s/guardian’s signature prior to participating in an NBSL event 10
