More conservation tips... WaterConserveBrochureIII.qxd 4/15/08 5:22 PM Page 1 Operate the dishwasher only when you have a full load. Consider a water efficient model when replacing your dishwasher. Consider a compost pile instead of the garbage disposal. Disposals require a lot of water to operate correctly and add additional loading to waste treatment facilities. Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of letting the water run until cool. PROGRAM When washing dishes by hand, fill one sink or basin with soapy water. Quickly rinse under a slow-moving stream from the faucet. Consider installing an instant water heater on your kitchen sink so you don’t have to let the water run while it heats up. To coin a phrase, conserving water is so easy even a caveman could do it. So make water conservation a part of your daily routine now and in the future. Helpful info... Gandhi Indoor water conservation Do you have a leaking faucet or toilet? What about letting the water run while brushing your teeth? These are just a couple of instances that can waste hundreds to thousands of gallons of water inside the home each year, and cost you hundreds of dollars. By being water wise, you can help conserve water, reduce water waste, save money and help the environment all at the same time. The average adult requires 2.5 quarts of water each day to maintain a healthy body, however, each person in our service area uses between 120 to 150 gallons of water per day. So help Winter Park’s water utility go green, and save some green by conserving water. Saving water inside the home is simple. Most of the water saving tips are easy to follow, so family members of all ages can participate to make your home water conscious. For example, usually repairs on leaky fixtures can be accomplished with a few simple tools. (Some leaks will require a plumber to fix.) Start checking for leaks in bathrooms, under sinks and around faucets. Next, make sure all inside water is turned off. Then check your water meter to see if the triangular leak detector is turning. If it is, you probably have a leak. Personal Care Plumbing Take a shower instead of a bath. A bath can use as much as 50 gallons of water. Shorten your shower time; use a shower timer to help. Fix the drip. If you have a faucet that leaks, replace the washers or o-rings to stop the leak. A one drip per second leak can waste 2,700 gallons per year. Install a low flow shower head. A four minute shower with a low flow shower head uses 8 gallons of water while an older shower head can use as much as 8 gallons a minute or 32 gallons of water for a four minute shower. Install a low flow showerhead. Shut the water off while shampooing your hair, soaping or shaving. A cut-off shower head temporarily stops water flow without altering water temperature. Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Dispose of insects, tissues and other trash in the wastebasket instead of the toilet. Teach your children wise water techniques and be a role model for water conservation. Laundry Wash full loads only and set the washer level accordingly. If you are thinking about purchasing a new washing machine, consider a water efficient model that uses 27 gallons per load or less. Front loading models use 20-25 gallons per load while the older non-water efficient models use as much as 40 gallons per load. Install low flow aerators in bathroom and kitchen faucets. Install a water dam or displacement device for your toilet to reduce water use. Be sure the installation does not interfere with the operating parts. Fix a leaking toilet. Replace worn toilet parts. Parts to fix a leaking toilet are relatively inexpensive, found at your local hardware store, and easy to install. To check for a leaky toilet, add a dye tablet designed for this use, in the toilet tank. If the toilet is leaking, color will appear in the toilet in about 30 minutes. (Be sure to flush as soon as the test is completed to avoid the possibility dye staining of the tank). A leaking toilet can waste about 50 gallons of water per day. Consider replacing your toilet with a new high efficiency toilet if it was made before 1994. The new low-flow toilets use 1.3 gallons or less per flush compared to the older toilets that use up to 5 gallons per flush.
