THE SALVATION ARMY METROPOLITAN DIVISION – Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Theatre Instructor LOCATION/DEPT: Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center REPORTS TO (TITLE): Performance & Visual Arts Manager DEPARTMENT MISSION The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center of Chicago exists to express the mission and ministry of The Salvation Army through a safe, enriching and sacred environment where all individuals have access to opportunities to reach their physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential. The Vision of the Chicago Kroc Center is to impact individuals, families and seniors of the Southside while building community, promoting excellence, motivating wellness, teaching character, and encouraging faith. OUTCOMES The Theatre Instructor is responsible for educating his or her students in different acting styles, methods, and techniques. Students must learn how to communicate, control and project their voices, and present themselves on stage and/or in front of audiences. The Theatre Instructor works directly with the Performance & Visual Arts Manager & Director of Arts & Education in developing course syllabi consistent with the mission of The Salvation Army. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for teaching enunciation, diction, voice development, and dialects, using voice exercises, speech drills, explanation, lectures, and improvisation. 1. Responsible for creating class curriculums consistent with TSA Kroc standards. 2. Is expected to teach students about the history of Theatre and all it entails. 3. Assist students in creating their own dramatic pieces. 4. Teach students basic techniques of managing lighting and sets to assist with student’s performance. 5. Responsible for teaching courses in theatre including, but not limited to, stage directing, acting (multiple levels), Introduction to Theatre, Voice for Actors, Movement and Stage Combat. 6. Required to actively participate in the recruitment and outreach efforts set forth by the Arts & Education Department. 7. Responsible for the teaching of all students enrolled in various programs within the Arts & Education Department. 8. Responsible for participating in the Visual and Performance Arts School Series on and off Kroc Center site. 9. Develop partnerships for Arts programming with schools & organizations. 10. Responsible for working with Kroc staff to promote ALL Kroc Center Programming. 11. Responsible for the development of public presentations of work. 12. Adapts course of study and training methods to meet student's need and ability. 13. Discusses and demonstrates vocal and body expression to teach acting styles, character development, and personality projection. 14. Auditions students to select cast and assign parts. 15. Assigns nonperforming students to backstage production tasks, such as constructing, painting, moving scenery, operating stage light, and sound equipment. 16. May teach elements of stagecraft, stage makeup, costume craft, play writing, or play direction. 17. Provide briefing of activities to the Performance & Visual Arts Manager and Director of Arts & Education. 18. Required to attend ALL staff meetings of the Arts Academy and RJKCCC. 19. Is expected to be on time and on task throughout the duration of the class. 20. Is expected to participate in other activities of RJKCCC as assigned. 21. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Performance and Visual Arts Manager or designee. RELATIONSHIPS This individual interacts with a wide range of contacts both within and outside The Salvation Army. In these contacts they act as a representative of the Army and its mission. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Under general supervision of the Performance and Visual Arts Manager with some freedom to plan, schedule and carry out responsibilities within established policies and guidelines. PERFORMANCE MEASURMENTS This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved by classroom observation, participant & parent surveys. Timeliness and accuracy of accomplishing assigned goals will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE 1. Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts, Drama or Musical Theatre, or other related fields preferred. 2. 3-5 years teaching experience as a teacher or theatre practitioner working with children, teens and adults. 3. At least 4-6 years performing experience in Theatre. 4. Must be Safe from Harm certified within 30 days of hire. 5. Must be CPR/First Aid certified within 30 days of hire. 6. A valid Illinois Driver’s License/MVR clearance. COMPENTENCIES Experience in curriculum development and be prepared to provide evidence of such. 1. Must be willing to teach evening & weekend classes, workshops, develop scripts and sets and one-on-one sessions when necessary. 2. Have a philosophy of education and child development, which is consistent with that of the RJKCCC and The Salvation Army. 3. Have the ability to work with children, parents and staff in a capacity of leadership, counseling and education including, but not limited to: Ability of relate joyfully and sensitively to children of all ages Sensitivity to the individual needs of children while maintaining group identity Ability to use appropriate positive discipline consistently Dependability Ability to handle security and crisis situations in a calm manner Ability to seek supervision and use it consistently. Ability to engage and maintain a child’s interest in the activities offered. 4. Membership in local, state, national organizations and other professional theatre organizations is highly preferred but not required. POSITION LIMITATIONS This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved. This individual will keep the Performance and Visual Arts Manager informed on all critical issues relating to his/her area of responsibility. This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT This position is required to do light to moderate physical work. In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use standard office equipment and a PC or for executing educational programs. The work environment for this position includes high levels of noise and flexibility in a constant changing environment. Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs.
