Those sounds mean that construction on our new client services and shelter "Sierra Center," is fully underway. Every room can hold up to four people, will have its own bathroom and individual heating and cooling system. Clients can stay up to 60 days if necessary. We are going to make even more of a difference and serve more Shasta County citizens who are affected by family violence. One SAFE Place - One SAFE Community. WELCOMING MEN The mission of helping struggling women and their families resonates across all demographics. To continue to expand that work, The Women's Fund is proud to host its third annual Men's Event on April 19 at 5:30 pm at Riverview Golf and Country Club in Redding. In 2014, more than 75 men attended an informational meeting to learn all about the history and work of The Women's Fund. This year, even more are expected, according to organizers David Kehoe and Judy Salter. "Our men members say they especially appreciate the permanent endowment fund and the business-like approach The Women's Fund takes in our grantmaking - giving a hand up rather than a hand out," said Salter. Thanks to our generous community, our 28th Annual Crab Feed, held on Jan. 31st, set a record for Camp Hope donations in a single event. Our Live Auction brought in over $25,000 for Camp Hope alone. TWF has seen membership swell from 142 in 2010 to 332 by the end of 2014, including both men and women. To register for the Men's Event, email [email protected]. DANCE WHILE YOU CAN I will believe I was born to dance., created by God to make a difference in people’s lives. There will be a 65,000 square foot pavilion on the east side of the village to host events. There will be a vineyard for esthetic and educational purposes. Over 180 construction jobs will be gained throughout the completion of the project. It is also estimated that 130 retail and service positions will be added to the local economy when the Village is fully operational. Novelist Kathleen Norris (18801966) River. What’s there now? A vacant lot. The End of Always Author Randi Davenport In 1907 Wisconsin, seventeenyear-old Marie Reehs is determined: she will not marry a violent man, as did her mother and grandmother before her. Day after day, Marie toils at the local laundry, watched by an older man who wants to claim her for his own. Night after night, she is haunted by the memory of her mother, who died in a mysterious accident to which her father was the only witness. She longs for an independent life, but her older sister wants nothing more than to maintain the family as it was, with its cruel rules and punishments. Her younger sister is too young to understand. At first, it seems that Marie's passionate love affair with a charismatic young man will lead her to freedom. But she soon realizes that she too may have inherited the Reehs women's dark family curse. Set in the lush woods and small towns of turn-of-the-century Wisconsin, and inspired by real events in the author's family history, THE END OF ALWAYS is a transcendent story of one woman's desperate efforts to escape a brutal heritage. Both enthralling and deeply lyrical, Randi Davenport's novel is also an intensely affecting testament to the power of determination and hope, and a gripping reminder of our nation's long love affair with violence. “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” Nelson Mandela Actually Chicago seems to have an aversion to its historic stations. Uppity Women Dynamite Hittite CEO The Mona Lisa has no eyebrows. In the Renaissance era, it was fashion to shave them off! Nature never gives up . . . Royal families of the ancient times often arranged weddings the way we order pizza – for convenience. Occasionally, however, the marriage came with, shall we say, extra toppings. Queen Puduhepa, whose life partner gave her respect, love, and a lavish amount of legal latitude and shared power, entered such marriage with “the works.” This happened in Hittite country around 1258 B.C., when the Hittite kings controlled a huge chunk of what is now Turkey. To the south, their paraoh counterparts ran Egypt. These two superpowers of their day often jockeyed over the terrain between them, Syria and the Holy Land. Daughter of a priest, Puduhepa grew to womanhood in the town of Kizzuwatna. She’d been a high priestess of Ishtar for years when she married King Hattisili and went to live in Hattusas, the capital of the Hittite empire. They reigned together for 24 years. “Together” is no exaggeration. There was no wretched first-lady circuit of tea parties, hospital openings, and rubber-chicken dinners for Puduhepa. As queen, she had legal rights to intervene in affairs of state, stand in for her husband when he was away, and administer royal properties. Well educated, interested in literature and Hittite history, ambitious for her family and country, Puduhepa carried on a busy international correspondence 7 with her royal counterparts (male and female) in Egypt and elsewhere. Archeologists have found 15 letters from Pharaoh Ramses II. She also signed the king’s letters with her own royal winged sun-disk seal; four of her personal seals have turned up in excavations. Every country longs for peace and prosperity in its time, and the Hittite national was no exception. After years of negotiation and dowry-dickering, the formerly warring Hittites and Egyptians signed a peace agreement called the Treats of Kadesh, Versions of it still exist in Egypt and Turkey; a silver version of the treaty was signed with Puduhepa’s personal seal as well The treaty culminated in the marriage of Puduhepa’s daughter Naptera to Ramses II. The queen further busied herself with achieving dynatic marriages for her other children. The archeological riches of the Hittite capital have yet to be completely excavated. The letters, legal documents, inscriptions, and other writing that have already come to light reveal that he Hittites had developed immensely sophisticated systems, such as wage and price controls, a cobyd of written laws, rules for social conduct, and religious rituals for every activity. At Hattusas there are rock reliefs that show Puduhepa performing religious rites to the Hittite thunder god. The letters and inscriptions protray a likable, human side to the royal couple. Puduhepa;s husband, Hattisili, for instance, says this about his marriage: “God granted us the love of husband and wife, and we had sons and daughters.” Lemon-Thyme Who was the first person to look at a cow and say, 'I think I'll squeeze these dangly things and drink whatever comes out'? The second question is, “How many seconds in a year?” Forrest thought for a little bit and answered, “12 – January 2nd, February 2nd, etc.” Saint Peter scratched his head, shrugged and again admitted that he’d have to accept that unusual answer. “Now”, said Saint Peter, “for the third question: “What is God’s first name?” This time Forrest did not hesitate at all. “Andy,” he replied. “Forrest, this time I just can’t accept that answer. Can you explain it?” “Sure,” instantly replied Forrest. “It’s in the church song – ‘Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me’” User Name is “soroptimist” & Password is “synergy” Internet went down and I had to spend time with the family.
