•
Density is a characteristic property of matter.
Why?
•
Matter (and it’s characteristic properties) comes in 3
phases; solid, liquid, gas. (is there a 4th?)
•
IMMISCIBLE (say it): liquids that are insoluble in
one another. Yesterday?
1.
A 10.0 cm3 block of silver has a mass of 105 g.
2.
A .52 cm3 amount of gold has a mass of 10 g.
3.
A 5.0 cm3 of rock salt has a mass of 10.7 g.
4.
A sample of ethyl alcohol has a volume of 0.50
cm3 and a mass of 0.41 g.
5.
A cube of magnesium has a mass of 17.0 g and
side length measurements of 2.2cm each.
Get 1 “baggie” per group of 4
 Write out how you will determine the
densities (procedure)
 Set up a data table with what you will
need to do this. (when this is done call me over)
 Each group of 2 get a balance and
determine the densities of the 4 items
 Determine which items will float in water,
oil, and corn syrup. (look up the densities of these items)
