Course Description/Rationale/Overview:
This course is designed to develop the oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills that students need for
success in their secondary school academic programs and in their daily lives. Students will analyse literary texts from
contemporary and historical periods, interpret informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a
variety of forms. An important focus will be on the use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. The course is
intended to prepare students for the Grade 10 academic English course, which leads to university or college preparation courses
in Grades 11 and 12.

Unit One: World Voices
Time: 30 periods
Description: In this instructional unit, students will do careful reading of short pieces of literature for detail of genre and
stylistic devices.

Unit Two: Novel Study
Time: 25 periods
Description: In this evaluation unit, students will read the novel independently, and in class will focus on major themes and
making historical, technological and personal connections.

Unit Three: Romeo and Juliet
Time: 25 periods
Description: This unit is designed to introduce students to Shakespearean drama. Students will examine significant themes and
issues in the play as they develop an understanding of the language and conventions of Elizabethan drama.

Unit Four: Independent Novel Study
Description: Students will read a novel of their choice and keep a literary journal throughout the semester. This novel study
