Women and the First
World War
Women and the First
World War
1 – 30 April
Free Exhibition
Wed 1 April at 1pm
Free Lecture
As part of a series of events
created by the Somme Museum
to commemorate the centenary
of the First World War, this
exhibition will explain the
important roles women at the
home front undertook after the
men of Ulster volunteered for
war. Topics include women on
the front line, stories of famous
women of the era and the
suffragette movement.
To fill the gap left when the
men were at war, women took
on previously male-dominated
roles in industry. These women
made varied contributions,
working in labs, mills and
factories, sometimes in
hazardous circumstances.
Carol Walker, Director of the
Somme Museum, explores the
changing role of women during
the war years.
