The Cardinal’s Appeal
We are grateful to the families in our parish who have
contributed to the Cardinal’s appeal thus far. To date,
we have raised $8,586 in pledges towards our $31,500
goal. Remember, 60% of any cash raised over goal is
returned to our parish. Please take a moment this week
to make your contribution. Thank you all for your
generous commitment.
St. Patrick’s Feast
Msgr Kevin O’Brien, will be our guest of honor at this
year’s St. Patrick’s event being held on Sunday, March
12, 2017. Music by Sean Maloney. This is the final
weekend to purchase tickets for the event.
Fasting and Abstinence
“FASTING” requires that only one full meal be taken
per day. Two other smaller meals may be taken during
the day to maintain physical strength, but these two
meals together should not equal a full meal in quantity.
Fasting obliges all those who have reached the age of 18
and continues to oblige until age 59. Those not
specifically obliged to fast are encouraged to join in the
discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able.
Abstinence prohibits individuals from eating meat on a
particular day. Abstinence obliges all those who have
reached the age of 14 and continues to oblige
throughout their entire life. Those not specifically
obliged to abstain from eating meat are encouraged to
join in this discipline to the extent that they are able.

Ash Wednesday
The season of carnival in the Christian calendar ends
with Fat Tuesday (also known as Mardi Gras), the day
before Ash Wednesday. The latter for at least two
centuries has signaled the start of Lent. There is no
doubt that for Latinos this day has a particular
attraction. It is one of the days when we arrive at church
en masse in order to receive ashes on our foreheads.
Where does the desire for the ashes come from? We
come from peoples rooted in the earth and we know that
the fields need to be burned from time to time to
continue producing good crops. By reflecting on our
lives, we learn that we are like the earth. We need to
control and cultivate ourselves to produce fruits and
flowers for the Lord and others. The ashes that are
placed on our foreheads remind us of this Christian
truth. They call us not only to repent for our sins but
also to be fruitful with good deeds.

Cuaresma
"El ayuno" requiere que una sola comida se tome al día. Las

Miércoles de Ceniza
El tiempo de carnaval en el calendario cristiano
termina con el martes gordo (mardi gras en francés) un
día antes del Miércoles de Ceniza. El Miércoles de
Ceniza es la fiesta cristiana que, por lo menos durante
doce siglos, ha señalado el comienzo de la Cuaresma.
No cabe duda que para los latinos este día es de
particular atracción. Es uno de los pocos días del año
litúrgico en el cual llegamos al templo en masa con tal
de recibir las cenizas en la frente. En mi parroquia
llegaban hasta cristianos protestantes latinos buscando
ser tiznados con las cenizas benditas. ¿De dónde viene
este afán por las cenizas? Venimos de pueblos
enraizados en la tierra y sabemos que los campos
necesitan quemarse de vez en cuando para seguir
produciendo cosas buenas. Reflexionando en torno a
nuestra vida nos damos cuenta que somos como la
tierra. Necesitamos dominarnos y cultivarnos para
producir frutos y flores para el Señor y los demás. Las
cenizas que se nos ponen en la frente nos recuerdan
esta verdad cristiana. Nos llaman no sólo al
arrepentimiento de nuestros pecados sino más bien a
dar frutos con obras buenas.
Campaña del Cardenal
Agradecemos a las muchas familias en nuestra
parroquia que hasta ahora han contribuido a la
Campana del Cardenal. Hasta la fecha de hoy, hemos
recaudad $8,586 en promesas para alcanzar nuestra
meta de $31,500. Recuerden que el 60% de los fondos
que recaudemos al sobrepasar la meta sera devuelto a
la parroquia. Por favor tome un momento esta semana
para hacer su contribución. Muchas gracias a todos
por su generoso compromiso.
Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios
Escribo esto contemplando las secuelas del
terremoto que destrozó a Haití en enero de
2010. La devastación no tiene palabras. Los
periódicos y las transmisiones de televisión
están repletos de fotos de los muertos y de
historias desgarradoras. Más de 220,000
personas murieron y hay cientos de miles de
heridos. Hay muy poca comida, agua y
vivienda, y escasos suministros médicos. Aun
así, en medio de un acontecimiento tan
trágico, dos días después del terremoto un
noticiero televisivo nos mostraba imágenes de
un grupo grande en Puerto Príncipe con sus
manos en alto y voces alzadas en oración de
alabanza a Dios.
Ésta es la clase de fe radical en Dios que Jesús
quiere de sus discípulos. El Padre no intervino
para salvar a su Hijo de la muerte, pero
tampoco permitió que la muerte tuviera la
última palabra, sino que resucitó a su Hijo de
entre los muertos. Esta muerte salvífica sigue
siendo el signo por sobre todos los signos de
que Dios quiere la vida eterna para nosotros.
A veces parece imposible dejar de
preocuparnos por el mañana, pero Jesús nos
asegura que el Padre no nos abandona
¡nunca!
Estamos llamados a ser administradores de los
misterios de la fe que se centran en la persona
de Jesucristo, y de su muerte y resurrección
que nos trajeron la salvación. Debemos
transmitir lo que se nos ha transmitido a
nosotros: que Jesús es el Hijo único de Dios, y
que él sufrió, murió y resucito por nuestra
salvación, y que por nuestro bautismo
quedamos inmersos en el misterio de la vida,
muerte y resurrección de Cristo.
Vivamos la Palabra de Dios
La respuesta al salmo de hoy es una maravillosa
oración del corazón que podemos hacer durante
toda la semana: “Sólo en Dios encuentro
descanso” (Salmo 61:6). Podemos orar con el
salmista para encontrar nuestra paz en Dios, que
es nuestra roca, nuestra salvación y nuestra
fuerza.
Reflecting on God’s Word
Twice a year the Gospels take us to the desert.
John the Baptist cries out on two Sundays
every Advent, and Jesus encounters Satan
every Lent. What makes the desert so ideal a
setting as we prepare to celebrate the two
great mysteries of our faith?
The desert is a place of testing, as God’s
people learned when they wandered around it
for forty years. With hardened hearts, they had
rejected the God who had liberated them from
slavery in Egypt, losing faith even while God
was talking to Moses and setting down the
conditions for their adoption. Up went the
golden calf and out went the memory of what
God had just done for them.
Even Eden wasn’t enough to keep the human
heart open. Even there it was clear that we
could be seduced by anything that looked
good and promised more than it could deliver.
But Jesus showed that one of us could
measure up to the test and reveal himself as
the “beloved Son” that he had been called at
his baptism (Matthew 3:17).
The desert is also for wooing. The prophet
Hosea quotes God saying, “So I will allure her
[Israel]; I will lead her into the desert and
speak to her heart” (Hosea 2:16). And when
Satan left Jesus, God sent “angels [who] came
and ministered to him” (Matthew 4:11).
So we come to this Lent and the possibility
that God wishes to draw us out into a quiet,
lonely place to have us meet the One who
made us, redeemed us, and continues to shape
us into temples of the Holy Spirit.
Living God’s Word
We pray that this Lent will be a time of
deeper understanding of what it means to be
God’s beloved child. We ask God to open our
eyes to recognize those things that draw us
away and to be open to how God might be
drawing us closer.
