Regardless of how recently a new box of ink was received, shake the box gently for 60 seconds before
installing it on the printer. This action ensures the ink is a homogenous mixture to provide the most
consistent jetting performance and color.
Shake before use
If you maintain more than one box of ink in inventory, be sure to observe “first in / first out” practice to
use oldest inventory first. UV-curable ink is perishable and has a “Use By” date on each box.
Inventory management
Store UV-curable ink in a cool location away from direct light. HP recommends storing the ink box with
the label right-side up for ease of reading.

This document describes the best practices for ensuring trouble-free installation and initial use of your
HP UV-curable inks. The product lines specifically addressed by this document include:
Introduction
If the ink has been properly shaken before installation, it will not require any further agitation under
normal printer usage conditions. If the printer is completely idle for more than 1-2 weeks, it may be
necessary to shake each ink box again before resuming printing.
Troubleshooting color shifts
If the ink box is not properly shaken before use, a color shift may occur gradually as the ink with a nonhomogenous mixture makes it way into the system. This ink will mix with the original ink still in the
printheads and ink tubes, gradually shifting more and more as printing takes place and more of the new
ink overtakes the old. There are two ways color typically shifts that can be attributed to failure to shake
the ink box before installation.
Color shifts away from the color of the new ink
In this hypothetical case, a new ink box was stored “right-side up”, with the label in the orientation for
reading.

In this hypothetical case, a new ink box was stored “upside down”, or in the same orientation as how the

Color shifts toward the color of the new ink
Recovering from a color shift due to an ink change
If a color shift is correlated to the recent installation of a new ink box, the following steps can be taken to
correct for the shift.
1. Linearize the color profile(s) on the print server. Or, if you know the new ink box was not shaken
before installation on the printer, you may skip to step 2.
Some variation may normally occur between lots of ink. Regular linearization of color profiles is a
best practice regardless of whether a new ink has been installed.
If linearization does not correct for the color shift, continue with the following.
2. Disconnect the ink box tube from the printer at the quick-disconnect.
3. Remove the ink box from the printer and shake gently for 60 seconds.

4. Reinstall the ink box and reconnect the ink tube to the printer.
5. From the control panel, select “Tools | Maintenance | Printhead Procedures | Empty Heads of Ink
(Fill with Air)”. Select the appropriate color and proceed.
This will push the ink out of the printheads using air pressure. The process will take a few minutes.
6. From the control panel, select “Tools | Maintenance | Printhead Procedures | Fill Heads with Ink”.
Select the appropriate color and proceed.
This will refill the printheads with ink. The process will take several minutes.
7. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for a total of 4 empty/fill cycles. This is necessary to ensure that all of the
non-homogenous ink is removed not only from the printheads but pushed from the pump and all
tubing in the system.
8. Linearize the color profile(s) on the print server.
9. Run a test print.
Cautions against simple visual evaluations of the
ink
When a color inaccuracy is suspected, it is natural to attempt to evaluate the correctness of the ink by a
simple visual comparison. Be advised, however, that the uncured liquid ink color may not bear a close
resemblance to the final color when the ink is normally jetted and cured. This is especially true if looking
at large volumes of the liquid ink, such as in the ink box.
