Our Lady promised Lucia at Fatima on July 13 th, 1917, that there would be a future manifestation concerning the practice of the Five First Saturdays and it was fulfilled on December 10th, 1925 saying: "Have compassion on the Heart of your Most Holy Mother, covered with thorns which ungrateful men place therein at every moment, while there is no one who does an act of reparation to withdraw them for her." Our Lady then addressed Lucia as follows: "Behold, my daughter, my Heart encircled with thorns, with which ungrateful men pierce It at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. Give me consolation, you, at least; and make known on my behalf that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all who on the First Saturday of five consecutive months confess their sins, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the purpose of making reparation to my Immaculate Heart." Chalking the Door 20 + C + M + B + 17 What is Chalking the Door? This short liturgy is a way of marking our homes, usually at the front or main entrance, with sacred signs and symbols as we ask God’s blessing upon those who live, work, or visit throughout the coming year. In Exodus, the Israelites marked their doors with blood so that the Lord would pass over their homes; but in this service, we mark our doors with chalk as a sign that we have invited God’s presence and blessing into our homes. It takes place on January 6th on the feast day of the Epiphany, which commemorates the visiting of the Christ Child by the three Magi (Wise Men) with their gifts of gold, incense, and myrrh. On Twelfth-Night in Europe, many families gather in their homes to celebrate this feast with friends, food, singing, and gifts. It is at these Twelfth-Night celebrations that “Chalking the Door” is most often observed. A traditional way of doing this is to use chalk to write above the home’s entrance, 20 + C + M + B + 17. What do the numbers and letters mean? The numbers at the beginning and end of the inscription simply refer to the current year – in the picture above, 2008. The letters C M B come from the traditional names for the three kings: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. Some also suggest “Christus Mansionem Benedicat” which means, “May Christ bless this dwelling!” If you would like a Chalking the Door Sign they will be at the entrance of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Diocese Wide Events 13th Annual Walk for Life West Coast will take place on Saturday, January 21 at the Civic Center plaza, San Francisco Pro-Life Mass with Bishop Soto On January 23 Bishop Jaime Soto will celebrate the 12:10 pm mass at the Cathedral in reparation for the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that made abortion legal in the United States. Please join our Bishop in asking God to convert the hearts of all Americans, most especially pregnant mothers, physicians, judges and legislators. For more information, contact Steve Patton, 916-733-0133, [email protected] Pro-Life Youth Program: Choose Life 2017 On January 23 at the Cathedral, the Diocese of Sacramento will offer Choose Life, a pro-life educational program for middle and high school youth. Attendees will 1) witness a live large-screen ultrasound, 2) find out what being "Pro-Life" vs. "Pro-Choice" really means, 3) learn how to speak and listen compassionately about abortion, and 4) get practical ideas to make a difference. Attendees from past years describe the experience as informative, moving, energizing and even entertaining. While the 10 am to noon morning program is limited to selected Catholic School students, the evening program from 7 – 8:30 pm is for any middle or high school student. There is no cost, but pre-registration is requested to help us with planning.
