Explanation of Dual Enrollment
Why take dual enrollment classes?
An immediate benefit is to save money, but other benefits include getting ahead on your college career and gaining
some experience and confidence about college level work through an easier transition. Dual enrollment means you get
credit for both a high school and a college class at the same time – one class, one grade, that gets counted two places. It
really is a great deal!
How do I request a copy of my Motlow transcript when I graduate from high school?
Complete a transcript request form to have your Motlow State Community College academic records sent to another
college or university. These can be picked up at any Motlow location, or you can mail a signed request including your
name and social security number and the address you would like the transcript to be sent. You can access the transcript
request form at http://www.mscc.edu/admissions/transcript_request.pdf
Does the Dual Enrollment Scholarship affect my Lottery Scholarship after I graduate from
high school?
Courses taken as a dual enrollment student do NOT affect your post high school eligibility for the Lottery Scholarship.
Your dual enrollment grades are not calculated into your GPA in determining if you are eligible for the Lottery
Scholarship, and the credit hours you earn as a dual enrollment student do not count toward the total number of hours
for lottery eligibility.
What if my ACT score is not quite high enough for me to be eligible for a dual enrollment
course; is there anything else I can do?
We do offer a Residual ACT that is valid only for Motlow State Community College. The results of this test cannot be
sent to other colleges or used to apply for the Tennessee Lottery Scholarship. You must have completed a Motlow
application to be eligible for the residual test. To find out test dates and times and to schedule a test, call our testing
center at (800)654-4877 ext. 1763 or 931-393-1763.
What if my high school GPA is not quite high enough for me to be eligible for a dual
enrollment course; is there anything else I can do?
A minimum high school GPA is no longer required for entry into this program.
How do I apply?

Checklist for Admission to Motlow College’s Dual/Joint Enrollment Program
_____ Determine your academic eligibility (all dual enrollment requires a 19 ACT composite):
If enrolling in ENGL 1010, ENGL 1020, COM 1010, or any course that has a collegiate English eligibility
prerequisite, you must have an ACT composite score of 19 or higher with sub scores in Writing and Reading of
19 or higher
If enrolling in any other course which does not have a corresponding ACT subscore, you must have an ACT
composite score of 19.
If you are a rising junior, you may use your ACT/PLAN score as the basis for your dual enrollment. You must
have a minimum ACT/PLAN score of 19 to be eligible.
If enrolling in a mathematics (MATH) course or any course that has a collegiate mathematics eligibility
prerequisite (CHEM 1110, for example) you must have an ACT composite score of 19 or higher with a sub score
in Math of 19 or higher.
_____ Complete the Motlow College Application for Dual/Joint Admission by the posted application deadline.
http://www.mscc.edu/dualjoint/DualJointApplication.pdf
_____ Include the $25 application fee. Checks should be made to Motlow College with the student’s name on the
check. If you have already paid an application fee to Motlow, you do not owe this fee again.
_____ Include an official copy of your high school transcript with your current GPA and ACT scores included. You can
get this from the Counseling Office at your high school. Although there is no longer a minimum gpa required
for enrollment, this information is required to verify your dual enrollment grant.
_____ Complete the Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant process located online at
https://egrands.guarantorsolutions.com/scholarshipapps/
Instructions for this process can be accessed at
http://www.tn.gov/collegepays/mon_college/dual_enroll_grant_rules.htm
_____ Check the calendar for the semester in which you plan to/are enrolled for important deadlines.
Please note: If your parent/guardian is a Tennessee public school teacher or a state employee, you may be eligible
for a discount in your fees. Please ask your parent/guardian to see his/her Human Resources Office for the
appropriate form. REMEMBER: Forms must be dated within 30 days of the payment of your fees and submitted to
the Motlow College Business Office by February 8, 2011.
You are responsible for these deadlines!
INFORMATION AND DATES FOR DUAL ENROLLMENT PARENTS/GUARDIANS
Bills are automatically generated and e-mailed to student e-mail accounts on certain dates. You may
receive an e-bill that does not reflect a deduction of the dual enrollment grant and/or Board of
Education money. This is either because the paperwork has not been processed, we do not have all of
the paperwork, or the collegiate GPA has dropped below a 2.75. We will provide a new e-bill for
students before classes begin. Students should pay all fees before attending any classes.
Listed below are some sample costs from Fall 2010. Fall 2010 fees and/or book costs may be different,

accessed at http://www.mscc.edu/calendar.html
Registration
Students must coordinate their registration requests through their High School Counseling Office to
ensure proper course selection and application of credits.
Students are not permitted to drop these classes without consulting with the high school counselor.
Grading
Motlow College will issue a letter grade to each student. Numerical grades will be used for high school
purposes. Considering the difference in grading scales, individual high schools may adjust the numeric
average to obtain a weighted score. 100 is the highest possible grade.
Students may obtain grades for the current term by logging on to Motlow’s web site at www.mscc.edu
Click on MyMotlow then:
1. Click “Student Login”
2. Enter user ID and PIN
3. Click “Student Records”
4. Click “Academic Transcript”
Grades will be available each term on the third weekday after final exams. Students may request a
printed copy of the transcript in writing from the Admissions and Records Office.
**To maintain dual enrollment grant funding, students must maintain a 2.75 collegiate GPA.
Tutoring
If you need help with a Motlow course, help may be available. Motlow subscribes to a 24/7 online
academic support service called Smarthinking. This can be accessed from Motlow’s website at the
bottom of the home page.
Motlow State Community College courses are easily transferrable to Tennessee Board of Regents
Institutions. It is the student’s responsibility to verify the transferability of courses to his or her future
institution and intended major.
