OHVA High School Student Council Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) School Year 2016-17 What’s the purpose of Student Council? The purpose of student council is to act as a vehicle of communication between students, faculty, community and school administration. What are some of the things the Student Council does? Work with the student body to make OHVA an even better place! Organize Regional Outings (Each region is required to host 1 in first semester and 1 in second semester) Organize Regional Service Projects (Each region is required to host 1 in first semester and 1 in second semester) Promote the dances (Fall Dance: Sat., November 19, 2016 and Spring Dance: Fri., April 28, 2016 in Columbus) How are the regions divided? See the list below. Do the regions elect officers? It depends upon the size of the region and the decision is made by the region advisor(s). Typically small regions do NOT elect officers. Northeast (NE) Northwest (NW) Central (C) Southeast (SE) South Central (SC) Southwest (SW) What are the requirements to join Student Council (not run for a Core Officer position)? All members must participate in AT LEAST 1 OHVA extra-curricular or community activity. Acceptable activities: o Any OHVA club, any community club, group or organization What do I do if I want to participate in student council (not run for a Core Officer position)? Send the following to Mrs. Keaton to become a student council member: 1. Your first and last name 2. Your grade (9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th) 3. Number of years have you attended OHVA 4. Extra-curricular activity you are involved in 5. County you live in (Please list your county - not COUNTRY - which determines your region) When is the first student council meeting? The first student council meeting of the 2016-17 school year will be held on Friday, September 2, 2016 at 12 p.m. All students are invited to attend to get more information about student council. Link will be Kmailed. What are the requirements to run for a Core Office? Core officers make decisions and host events for the entire High School student body, not just one regional area. 1. Core Officer requirements will be distributed by Mrs. Keaton. 2. Your GPA must be a 3.0 or higher to run for president and 2.5 or higher to run for vice president, secretary, or treasurer. 3. Core Officers will run as a group on one ticket. All four students will run and campaign together. • President • Vice President • Secretary • Treasurer 4. The president of each ticket must Kmail Mrs. Keaton the name of each person on the ticket and the office each person is running for by Monday, September 19, 2016. 5. Mrs. Keaton will verify each student’s GPA on the ticket and will send a Kmail to each student to verify if he or she is eligible to run for a Core Office. 6. Record a Campaign Commercial that is 5 minutes or less. (There will be no exceptions to this rule.) • Each ticket can record on their own or meet with Mrs. Keaton online to record a commercial. • Send Mrs. Keaton the link to the recorded commercial by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21, 2016. • Mrs. Keaton will put all of the links into a Kmail that will be sent to the student body. • Students will watch the commercials and cast their vote on Thursday, September 22, 2016. • The winning officer team will be announced on Friday, September 23, 2016.
