Bellingham High
School
On January 8th, 2015, eleven Bellingham High School students performed
in the school-wide Poetry Out Loud contest. These students
demonstrated exceptional scholarship with their memorization and
recitation of two poems they performed in front of a panel of judges.
Not only did they have to qualify to perform in this contest by winning a
classroom contest or by trying out, but they also demonstrated their
depth of understanding of the poems and grace under pressure in these
dynamic performances. The students who performed included Elena
Bauer, Ethan Berschauer, Austyn Brown, Sophia Carpenter, Colin
Glaze, Kaitlyn Harvey, Rose Haskell, Elizabeth Mellor, Abbey Monson,
Tim Mumford, and Lauren Wittkopf.

Red Raider PTSA
Our Bellingham High School winners were Sophia Carpenter in first
place, with her poems Silence by Thomas Hood and Constantly Risking
Absurdity by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and runner-up Elena Bauer, with
her poems The Paradox by Paul Laurence Dunbar and a song in the
front yard by Gwendolyn Brooks.
Sophia recited her poems at the Regional Contest on February 5th where
she performed Constantly Risking Absurdity by Lawrence Ferlinghetti
and I Heard a Fly Buzz by Emily Dickinson. All of our students involved
in this contest exemplified the Bellingham Promise as “performers…
effective communicators…confident individuals who continuously
challenge themselves…and well-rounded community memembers
engaged with the broader world.”
We Believe In:
Treating all members of the BHS Community with dignity and respect... Taking care of this great place… Producing quality work…

Dear BHS Parents,
Please have your
son/daughter take this
Student Athletic
Interest Survey.
Washington State Law
requires school districts
to survey their students
every three years to
determine if our
program offerings
match the needs and
interests of our
students. Your child’s
participation in this
survey will assist us as
we assess what we
offer.
AP and College in the High School
information night for parent and students
will be on Wednesday February 11, 2015
from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm starting in the
Theater. If you plan on taking one or more
AP courses next year, this meeting is
required. You will receive overview
information as well as course specific
information. There will be 3 breakout sessions
to attend with AP teachers. We will send out a
school messenger reminder on Monday. Please
plan on attending. See you all there.
Career Center Update:
Bellingham High’s first Scholarship Fair is coming
up on Tuesday, February 10th at 9:25am during
RTI . Meet representatives from Dollars For
Scholars, the Todd Curran, College Bound, BTC
and Whatcom Foundation. Scholarship applications
and application tips will be available. Parents are
welcome.
Representatives from
the Washington State
University Honors
Program will be at
Bellingham High School
on Monday (2/9) at
12:30 in the Career
Center. If you are
interested in WSU and
their Honors program
stop in the CC to sign up
for this event.
Because we have great support for the performing arts in
our school, Bellingham High placed well again this year
at the District Solo/Ensemble Contest. Out of 95
possible winners and alternates, BHS took 25. The only
school with more was Mt. Vernon, which is classified as
AAAA.

BELLINGHAM UNITED DEBATE CLUB SCORES ANOTHER WIN AT KAMIAK
BUDC took home two more trophies at the 17th annual Kamiak High School Viking
Classic tournament. Sehome freshperson Katie Clarke won third place in Novice
Impromptu Speaking and Clarke and BHS freshperson Hunter Renz won first place
in Novice Policy Debate. Making the trophy moment even sweeter was the
discovery that, as novices in only their second full tournament together, they had
beaten a highly competitive Open Policy team that has won bids to the state
tournament two years in a row.
Our Open Public Forum team of Kendal Barnes (freshperson, BHS) and Caroline
Chen (sophomore, SHS) went 3-3 with high speaker points and more than held their
own against more experienced teams.
