THEME OF THE SEMNAR
The theme of the Seminar would
be “Environment Preservation in
Sustainable Development”
A developed society over the last few
decades has become synonymous
with higher resource consumption.
Use of large variety of manufactured
building materials, high level of
mechanization and high energy
resources has put a lot of strain on
environment. As the development
of human civilization follows in
ascending direction, the consumption
of land and other resources would
increase, causing depletion of the
environment and its resources which
may not be sustained in future. Today,
the sustainability of built environment
is hampered by several factors, such
as inadequacy of land, water, energy
and non availability of clean air.
In India, the essential frame work for
sustainable development is built on
democratic continuity, devolution
of power, transparency and people’s
participation. The central theme
of planning process is better use
and management of land and other
natural resources.
Sustainable
habitat design has direct impact on
energy and resource consumption.
This planning process recognizes
the synergy between environment,
health and development. The energy
consumption needs to be reduced
through conservation, adoption
of energy efficiency measures and
exploitation of renewable energy
generation resources.
The energy consumption in developed
countries is several times more than
that in the developing countries.
Available sources of energy cannot
sustain this higher consumption
by such a large population. Energy
and environmental concerns are,
therefore, of great importance. Air,
water pollution and wastes, entering
the environment have an effect of
adversely affecting the quality of life.
As a result of industrialization and
mechanization, global warming is
taking place due to increased levels
of green house gases. International
efforts through Kyoto Protocol,
Bali Action Plan and Copenhagen
Accords to refix the emission targets
have gone some way in compelling
sustainable development.
The Seminar will deliberate on
various aspects of the theme and
evolve policies and guidelines that,
could bring improvement in levels
of environmental sustainability of
the built environment. Deliberations
are planned to be held under the
following sub-themes:-
• Environmental Concerns including
Impact Assessment
• Environmental Legislation
• Sustainable Building Materials
• Energy Conservation and Renewable
Energy Resources
