Get On Your Bike as RaboDirect Tour De Picnic Officially Launches Today
Last year Tour De Picnic broke the €1.2 million mark in funds raised for children's charities to date.
Back for its seventh annual instalment, 2fm’s Jennifer Maguire, Keith Walsh and Bernard O’Shea
urged cyclists ‘to get on their bike and get riding and fundraising’ for RaboDirect Tour de Picnic 2015.
This year three very worthwhile charities will benefit from the funds raised – The ISPCC (Childline),
Special Olympics Ireland and The Irish Youth Foundation.
Brian McDermott, event organiser said “Thanks to everyone who cycled and fundraised and to you the
public for your generosity in sponsorship over the years. It’s hard to believe that we started with only
30 cyclists six years ago and now we have 1,000 cyclists as well as runners, taking part. It’s
extraordinary what a huge difference we have been able to make to so many Irish people’s lives
through our charity partners. I would also like to welcome our new Sponsor RaboDirect, I look forward
to what looks like an exciting partnership ahead”.
Gail Banim, Head of Marketing RaboDirect said: “We’re thrilled to support an event that promises
festival goers a healthy kickstart to their weekend and benefits these really worthwhile causes as well“.
You can register to cycle or run RaboDirect Tour De Picnic 2015 through
http://rabodirecttourdepicnic.com/ - a €50 deposit is all it takes to secure your place for a ticket to
Ireland’s biggest and best festival. This deposit is also counted towards your final fund raising total.
Everyone is asked to raise a minimum of €380 by Friday 14th August 2015. This year you must have at
least €150 euro raised by Friday June 19th to secure your place due to extremely high demand for
Electric Picnic tickets. If you sign up after June 19th you must pay a deposit of €150 which counts
towards your total €380.
The royal treatment for all cyclists and runners includes the fully supported 80km cycle or 15km run
(supplement by bus), baggage transfer, return bus, bike transfer home, all the snacks you can eat,
special TDP kit, a private party on arrival and of course admission to Electric Picnic. It all starts by
signing up right now! Get in touch if you have any questions on [email protected] or 01 497 9337
Tour de Picnic is working with Childline (ISPCC) to help raise vital funds to support the services they
provide to children and teens across the country. The staff and volunteers work to empower, support
and protect young people through offering free and confidential phone, text and online services.
Childline require funding as there has been a short fall in donations and funding in recent years. The
lower figures mean they may have to consider a cut to their services. To continue operating on a 24/7
basis Childline rely on funding and donations. Figures in November 2014 showed that 45,000 calls
went unanswered and that number will increase if funding continues to drop; the need for the
services Childline provide is vital. Childline can assist children in dangerous situations by working with
the police and social workers at the caller’s approval.
Text and online services are currently only available from 10am – 4pm daily, this can be improved and
extended with the help from Tour de Picnic providing extra experienced support for the young people
in need of help and advice.
INDY (Inner-City North Dublin Youth) Bikes programme is run by local young people as part of the Irish
Youth Foundation and supported by Bradog Youth Service. The programme’s objective is to engage
children and young people (aged 10–21) from a typical tough Inner City community and introduce
them to the world of bikes. The programme encourages repairs and maintenance; building new bikes
from old frames; learning about fitness, health and environmental benefits of cycling; Developing
local leaders and role models. The Irish Youth Foundation has set a target of raising €50k to fund a
Bicycle Programme; INDY Bikes.
The programme is already working and has captured the imagination of local youth. But in an area
seriously affected by poverty and unemployment, there is a need to reach more young people in
order to have an effect on the whole community.
Special Olympics is first and foremost a sports organisation for people with an intellectual disability,
and also provides athletes with far more than the physical benefits of sport. It’s about fun, friendships
and team spirit; it’s about a feeling of belonging, and ultimately improving quality of life. Through
sport, athletes develop both physically and emotionally, they make new friends, realise their dreams,
and know they can fit in.
The funds donated to Special Olympics will contribute to the cost of sending Team Ireland to
participate in the Special Olympics World Summer Games in LA from 25 July to August 2 August 2015.
