A WORD FROM SUPERINTENDENT MARSHALL
SPRING ISSUE
Volume 7 Issue 3
Happy spring!
This season of hopefulness and light brings us closer to our highest of school holidays: graduation. Our fourteen seniors are
looking at each other and their building a little differently as they battle senioritis and begin to come to terms with the transition
that is around the corner. Right now they are busy with college applications, FAFSA, college visits, acceptance letters, preparing
for scholarship interviews, and coming to terms with what next year might look like without the classmates they have known for
so many years sitting near them. They are surrounded by teachers and administrators who help to guide them through the
process and families who are probably equally nervous (and ready) for this next phase. It is an exciting and odd time in a
young adult’s life. We hope they all know how proud we are of each of them.
We would like to invite you to our graduation ceremony on Friday, May 27 at 7 PM in our gym. This celebration is for the entire
community, and if you have never attended, you really should join us to help us launch these amazing young men and women
off to the next exciting phase of their lives. You may also be interested in joining us for our incredible awards ceremony on
Monday, May 23 at 6 PM as we recognize many students for their accomplishments this year and award tens of thousands of
dollars of scholarships from our community. Both of these events are reasons to be proud of the community support behind our
kids.
We also hope to see you at the Memorial Day Parade as our band proudly and patriotically honors our fallen soldiers. We hope
you wave to us when you see us working to beautify the village on our Community Pride Day. We invite you to check out our
website calendar and join us for a track meet, a baseball game, or a golf match. We just want you to know how much we
appreciate your support throughout the school year, and it is in the spring that we reflect on the impact you have had in helping
us throughout the year. Thank you for all that you do for us!

Superintendent, Principal

BE NICE!
We thank student council and TOPPC (The
Oceana Prevention Partnership for Change)
members for organizing and planning the NICE
assembly held on Friday, January 29, 2016, for our
7th—12th grade students. NICE is an acrostic for
Notice, Invite, Challenge, Empower! Special
guest, Rick Chyme, presented a motivating
discussion with our students. Be Nice is a
positive, anti-bullying initiative designed to spread
awareness surrounding the issues of bullying and
the importance of treating people with civility
community wide. By creating awareness, we will
minimize and reduce the devastating effects of
bullying such as depression and suicide. This
program is a part of the Mental Health Foundation
of West Michigan’s Live—Love—Laugh initiative!
DISTRICT BAND FESTIVAL—
PENNY WARS—
Congratulations to our high school band on
receiving a “1” rating at district band festival on
Thursday, March 3, 2016. The band will now
perform at the state band festival in April. This is the
19th consecutive year that our high school bands
have achieved this level of excellence!
Congratulations to Mr. Dan Root and to the band for
this achievement! Congratulations also goes to our
junior high bands in receiving a “2” rating at district
band festival! Pentwater Schools celebrates the arts
and humanities in creating an enriching educational
experience for our students! We invite the community
to enjoy this excellence at our spring band concert to
be held on Thursday, May 12, at 7:00 p.m.
Thank you to all of our students and families who
donated during our “Penny Wars” competition during
the week of 2/8—2/12/16! All funds donated were
sent to Flint Community Schools to purchase bottled
water for the students! The students raised $559.67
with our 2nd grade classroom collecting the most
pennies! Students helping other students in need is a
tremendous learning opportunity!
Thanks to Senator Geoff Hansen for visiting some of
our elementary students to encourage them to read!
He encouraged our third grade students to read to
their siblings as well as reading for their own pleasure
and learning.
KINDERGARTEN 2016—

Our juniors show their excitement as they explore
college and career options at an awesome expo at
Shelby High School! The Oceana College Access
Network (Oceana CAN!) hosted a College and Career
Fair for all Oceana County high school juniors on
Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016 at the Shelby High School.
The goal of the fair was to create a critical link
between the classroom and the workplace by allowing
all Oceana County high school juniors the opportunity
to explore various career options and higher education
pathways in order to make informed educational and
career choices.
