English
The children will be working to produce a narrative based around a
well-known book. We will be looking to extend the children’s independent writing skills in the following areas:

Using complex sentence which are punctuated correctly e.g. As
the snowflakes fluttered to the ground, the bitter wind made
them dance like graceful ballerinas.

Be able to use adverbs in different parts of a sentence to
describe how, when or where.

Be confident when using possessive apostrophes

Know how to punctuate direct speech accurately.

The children are expected to use joined up writing by the end
of year 3.
Our main focus this half term will be learning the
time, place value and addition and subtraction.
We will be consolidating what the children have already learnt so far this year and applying these skills
to solve problems.
We will continue to consolidate the 3, 4 and 8 times
tables as the children need to know these by the end
of year 3. We will be having a times tables quiz in
school every Friday. If you could spend some time every week learning these times tables it would be hugely
beneficial to your child.

There will be a guided reading session every day. The children will be
given opportunities to discuss what they have read and answer as well
as ask questions about the text. Please read together as often as you
can and sign the Reading Diary at least 3 times a week. Please continue
to support your child in learning the spelling rules as this is a whole
school focus.
Important Information
Theme
Our theme for the half term is “Survival.” We will be asking ourselves how did people from the Stone Age survive and how does this impact on us
today?
We will be taking a trip to the Blue John mines.
P.E days:
Year 3: Monday and Wednesday. Please provide your child with a named P.E. kit, plain navy shorts and a plain white T-shirt. Earrings should not be
worn on P.E. days for safety reasons. If you cannot remove the earrings please provide plasters for your child to cover their earrings.
Medicine/Inhalers
If your child requires medicine or an inhaler you will need to fill in a medical form from the office. We will then administer medicine as required.
If your child has been sick or has had diarrhoea school policy is that they stay off school 48 hours after they were last sick. This is to try and
reduce the risk of infection spreading.
Healthy Snacks/ School Meals
Please remember to bring in a healthy snack for morning playtimes (no crisps, sweets or chocolate) as well as a water bottle which can be refilled
at school. Please remember to order your child’s lunch from home. If you are unsure of how to do this feel free to pop into the office to be shown
on our touch screen computer.
Homework
Spellings and maths homework are set on a Friday then handed in the following Friday. The spelling test is also on the Friday. Reading books are
changed as often as is needed (as long as they have been signed by a parent or carer.)
Toys in School
We ask that the children do not bring toys into school. They cause a distraction and can cause a great deal of upset if broken or mislaid. We find
that the children play beautifully together at break times using their imaginations rather than toys. Thank you for your help with this. Please
note that Pokemon cards have now been banned.
Stay and Read
Stay and Read is 8.40am-9.20am on Wednesday of week 3 and 6. This is a great opportunity for you to come in to school and share stories with
your child. It is a drop in session so you can attend every time or just once if you can make it - you do not need to let us know that you are coming.
