Message From
Peter Monaghan,
Principal
Greetings Glenbard West Community We are now moving into the sixth week of the school
year and by all accounts, things are going great at
Glenbard West! It has truly been an exciting start of the
year for us and if you attended our most recent open
house, you must have been impressed by the energy and
commitment of our teachers, administrators and support
staff. Please take a moment to examine the student
recognition portion of this newsletter. I hope it shows
just how many students achieve at West at a remarkably
high level. Still, there are many other success stories that
need to be told. Here are a few:
Once again, Glenbard West has been named by
The Washington Post as one of "America's Most
Challenging High Schools."
Implementation of the iPad and 1:1 technology
throughout the school has been very successful.
Students and teachers are adapting and
collaborating while using the technology to
improve instruction and engagement.
Counselors at West are working hard with seniors
who are eagerly completing college applications,
essays and recommendation letters. Kudos to all
of our counselors.
Coaches and sponsors have once again set the bar
high when it comes to student engagement outside
of the classroom.
Our freshmen orientation programs have been
going very well. Congrats to the leaders of that
endeavor.
Congratulations to the Glenbard West Boosters for
running another successful golf outing. If you are
not already a member, be sure to join (information
is on our web page).
The Glenbard West spirit will come into full focus
as we enter into the Homecoming season. See the
agenda in this newsletter and be sure to get
involved.
Since becoming principal last year, my mission has been
to maintain the pride, tradition and excellence that have
defined our school, while establishing high expectations
when it comes to preparing our students for life after high
school. As always, I appreciate the support we receive
from parents and community members.
Go West!
Sincerely,
Peter Monaghan

A Message From
Dr. David Larson,
Superintendent
New Devices Enhance the Learning Environment
Integrating technology into the learning environment is a
key focus as we begin another school year at Glenbard
schools. All freshman instructors are developing learning
experiences that incorporate the use of iPads into daily
instruction. So what are some of the ways that both
teachers and students have been empowered in the
teaching and learning process? Because of 1:1
technology access, students will:
Be More Knowledgeable and Skilled - Students
will be able to access multiple sources of
information quickly and efficiently. Because of
immediate access to a world of information,
students will be able to develop key skills, such as
transferring knowledge to new contexts, engaging
in authentic research and developing precision and
accuracy.
Learn to Effectively Communicate and Collaborate
With Others - Students will be able to develop
learning networks that build relationships, provide
the opportunity to share information and continue
to advance the key skills of reading, writing and
speaking skillfully.
Be Creators and Contributors - Students will be
able to construct new knowledge, generate new
ideas and inspire others while still producing high
quality original work.
Be Global Citizens of Character - Access to
technology will better enable students to be
citizens who value both local and global
perspectives. Students will be better able to
understand languages, develop cultural empathy
and build broader perspectives of themselves, their
community and the world.
These new classroom 1:1 devices will allow learning
experiences that challenge students to think, develop indepth understandings and apply academic learning to be
"future ready".
Parent/Teacher Conferences
November 5th & 6th
Parent / Teacher Conferences will be held at Glenbard
West on November 5th (4:00-8:00 p.m.) and November
6th (2:00-6:00 p.m.). To schedule conferences, parents
will be able to access the PTC Wizard through the Quick
Links section located at www.glenbardwesths.org
beginning October 22. Then parents register and select
specific teachers and conference time slots for each child.
