following content mastered to pass the current 3rd grade reading test. In Indiana, this
is IREAD. It may be called something different in your state.
The state test is made up of the following and this information can be found on the DOE website. I did not create this list, and give credit to the
DOE for the following Information. This is just a helpful reminder for easy reference. Please visit the Department of Education for more information
and samples.
THE TEST IS DIVIDED INTO 3 CATEGORIES
30% Reading: Word recognition, fluency, and vocabulary development. Skills include
BEGINNING, MIDDLE, AND ENDING SOUNDS
SYNONYMS, ANTONYMS, AND HOMOGRAPHS
SUFFIXES…Prefixes are not mentioned, however, I think this is important to
include.
CONTEXT CLUES
30% Reading: Comprehension and evaluation of Nonfiction and Information text.
Students need to have plenty practice with short stories that compare and
contrast, make predictions, and identify important information in text.
Examples should include problem/solution, cause/effect, and main idea. Students
should be versed in strategies using multiple choice answers.
30% Reading: Comprehension and evaluation of literary text. Recall and describe
story elements.
Students should have plenty practice identifying plots, character traits,
