Ogunode ran 10,01 at 100 m, Kipkoech beat Juantoren’s record
The renewed 51st year of the Pravda – Televízia – Slovnaft international athletic
meeting in the modern x-bionic® sphere sport complex in Šamorín was very
successful. 3000 spectators could witness the making of five records of the meeting,
three best achievements in Slovakia, the world achievement of the year – 11:22,36
by Anton Kučmín in 3000 m walk (till recently Rew from New Zealand in 11:34,6),
and a Slovak record of 44,66 in women’s 4 x 100 m relay ran by Šibová, Kršáková,
Putalová, and Bezeková.
The world ranking leader Femi Ogunode from Qatar reaffirmed his position of the
main favourite in men’s 100 m. His time 10,01 improved the P – T – S record by 6
hundredths of a second, which had belonged to the legendary American Calvin Smith
since 1988. Ogunode, who’s from Qatar, won with a huge advantage of 25
hundredths over the South African Bruintjies. The winner also equalled the best
achievement at 100 m in Slovakia, which had belonged to the Jamaican Nest Carter
on the Athletic Bridge in Dubnica since 2012.
Nicholas Kipkoech from Kenya proved that he is the rightful world champion in the
800 m. In time 1:44,70 he beat the 28 years old record of the meeting (1:44,97)
which had belonged to Albert Juantoren from Cuba who symbolically gave the
winner’s prize to his successor.
The third record of the P – T – S meeting was achieved by the Turkish men’s relay in
the 4 x 100 m (38,69) ran by Barnes, Harvey, Safer, Gulijev, which was also a
national record. Fun fact: the first two are of Jamaican origins and Gulijev comes
from Azerbaijan!
Two general records of the meeting were achieved as well. The main star of the
meeting and world record maker Anita Wlodarczykova threw 77,70 m in the closely
watched women’s hammer throw. The 4 x 100 m women’s relay run was won by
India in time 3:31,39.
Anton Kučmín was the only Slovak athlete who could win against the tough
competition of athletes from abroad. In time 11:22,36 he clearly overtook the World
Champion in 50 km walk Matej Tóth by 10 seconds in the 3000 m walk. This was the
season’s first competition for the 33 years old champion. The Slovak medal hattrick
was concluded by the young Úradník.
Other Slovak athletes who stood on the podium include Martin Kučera, who finished
third at 400 m fences (50,17). Second places went to Marcel Lomnický in the
hammer throw (76,67 – below Nazarov by 55 cm) and the height duo Matúš Bubeník
– Lukáš Beer (both 215). The third place went to the distance runner Jana Velďáková
(650). Slovak women’s relay in the 4 x 100 m (Vladimíra Šibová, Lenka Kršáková,
Iveta Putalová, Alexandra Bezeková) ran well too. In time 44,65, they beat the
national record of the quarter from the EG 2015 in Baku by 27 hundredths, where
Jana Velďaková ran instead of Šibová.
