THE
MAYANS
Our theme for Autumn 2 is: The Mayans
Humanities
English
In humanities this term, Mrs Dawes will be
teaching us all about the Mayan civilization, who they were, when they were
around and what they were like.
In English this half term, our focus is on the book The
Spiderwick Chronicles: The Field Guide. We will be
developing our reading comprehension skills, as well as
developing an understanding of character and plot. We
will also complete work on Newspapers. Within this unit
we will study examples of newspaper articles and we will
create one of our own. We continue to complete a ‘cold
write’ and ‘hot write’ at the beginning and end of each
unit.
Science
In science this half term we will be looking at
circuits and electricity. We will be focussing on
building accurate circuits in which a bulb will
light and other components will work. We will
also use our growing knowledge to make predictions and justify them.
Outdoor Learning
The children will be able to continue to develop
their skills outside the classroom and apply them
to different contexts.
Outdoor learning will take place on alternate
Wednesdays. We ask that children have appropriate clothing and footwear in school i.e. trainers or wellies and a spare pair of trousers.
Maths
In Maths we will be consolidating and extending the
knowledge of the four rules of number - addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division. In addition
to this, we will be looking at money, negative
numbers, fractions, decimal numbers and shape.
Throughout the half term, we will also continue to
develop our mental maths skills. Please encourage
your child to learn their times tables every night to
support the work done in class.
We are continuing ‘PATHS’ - look out for the
compliment letters that the children bring
home! Each day a different child is chosen to
be a King or Queen, and they are given special
jobs to do throughout the day.
P.E.
This half term we are focussing on tennis.
Computing
We will be learning how to use word processing
software to create interesting posters and information pages.
