Our policies and procedures for transfer and applicability of course credits to a JCU Associate or
BachelorofArtsdegreeincorporatethesebasicprinciples:
1. We expect to verify whether or not the student's experience at the other institution is
appropriatelycommensuratewiththeexperienceofstudentsinsimilarcoursesofferedby
JCUwithrespecttocontent,academiclevel,scopeandrelevance.
2. Whether that experience is of reasonable comparability and applicability and can be
documentedinsomemanner,(e.g.comingfromafullyaccreditedcollegeoruniversity)
3. Whether that experience is of reasonable comparability and applicability and can be
documented by the student via other means such as textbooks, syllabi, exams, papers,
projects,etc.
CourseworkofcomparablecontentandscopetotheJCUcurriculumwillgenerallybetransferredif
it was completed at colleges or universities accredited by a US Secretary of Education nationally
recognizedaccreditationagencyatthetimetheworkwascompleted.Forinternationalcollegesor
universities, the international equivalent of regional accreditation or Ministry of Education
recognitionwillbeconsidered.
Ifcourseworkwascompletedataschoolnotregionallyaccredited,astudentmayspecificallyrequest
thattheircourseworkbeconsideredfortransfer.TheRegistrar’sOfficeatJohnCabotUniversitywill
utilize the recommendations of American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions
Officers(AACRAO)whenmakingitsdecision.
Theserecommendationsinclude,butarenotlimitedto:
 Theeducationalqualityofthesendinginstitution
 ThecomparabilityofcredittobetransferredtoJCU
 ApplicabilityofthecreditinrelationtotheprogramsbeingofferedatJCU
 Additionaldocumentationthatthestudentmayberequiredtoprovideregardingthecourse
workfortransferability.
Studentsmayalsoreceivecreditforcourseworktakenat13‐yearsecondaryeducational
institutionsorbyexaminationaspertheguidelinesbelow.
TransferCreditEvaluation
During the admissions’ process, the Office of Admissions will perform an initial, preliminary
evaluationofyourtransfercredit.Thefinaldeterminationofhowyourtransfercreditsareapplied
towarddegreerequirementswillbemadebytheRegistrar’sOfficewiththeapprovaloftheDean’s
Office.
OnlycoursestakenatacollegeoruniversityofrecognizedstandingwithgradesofC(orinternational
equivalent;forItalythisisascoreof23)orhigherareacceptedfortransfer.Creditisnotawarded
forPass/FailgradesandforAuditedcourses.Alltransferredcoursesarerecordedonthestudent’s
academic record. The Registrar reserves the right to determine how transferred course semester
credit hours are applied toward graduation requirements in accordance with the policies of the
college.
ThecreditsystematJohnCabotUniversityisbasedonsemestercredithours.Creditstransferred
fromcolleges/universitieswithadifferentcreditsystemwillbeconvertedtotheJCUequivalent.
Credit for courses taken online will be evaluated on a case‐by‐case basis by the Registrar’s Office
providedthatthecoursewascompleteatanaccreditedcollegeoruniversity.
College‐levelworktakenduringhighschoolisevaluatedinaccordancewithgeneralguidelinesfor
transfercreditatJCU.Officialcollegetranscriptsofworktakenmustbereceivedinorderfortransfer
credittobeawarded.
Provisionaltransfercreditsmaybeinitiallyawardediftheacademicdocumentationreceivedisinan
unofficialform(e.g.onlineresults,photocopy…).Insuchcases,transfercreditswillnotbeofficially
granteduntilandunlessofficialdocumentationisprovided.Thisistrueandapplicableforalltransfer
creditmaterial:transcripts,diplomas,certificates,scorecards,gradereportsandanyotheracademic
document.

 Yourofficialsecondary/highschooltranscriptandfinaldiplomaorcertificateofcompletion
ofsecondaryeducation
 Your official college/university transcripts submitted directly by your college/university
registraratanyandallinstitutionsyouhaveattended
 A‐levels,APExamsaswellasIBDiplomas/CertificatesmustbesubmittedtotheRegistrar’s
Officedirectlybytheorganizationreleasingtheresults(i.e.CollegeBoard,IBOrganization)
 AnydocumentthatisalanguageotherthanEnglishorItalianmustbesubmittedinoriginal
form,accompaniedbyacertifiedtranslation.

CreditforAPexaminationscannotbeevaluatedfromcollegeorhighschooltranscripts.Scorereports
fromtheCollegeBoardmustbesubmitteddirectlytoJCUforevaluation.CreditsaregrantedforAP
examinationswithascoreof4andabove.

InternationalBaccalaureate(IB)
CreditisgrantedforapprovedInternationalBaccalaureate(IB)examinationsatboththehigherlevel
and the standard level with a score of 4 and above. An official IB Diploma or Certificate must be
submitteddirectlytotheuniversitybytheInternationalBaccalaureateOrganizationforevaluation.
Examinationscannotbeevaluatedfromhighschoolorcollegetranscripts.

UKASandA‐Levels
ScorereportsmustbesubmittedfromEdexceldirectlytotheuniversity.Examinationscannotbe
evaluatedfromhighschoolorcollegetranscripts.
ForA‐LevelspassedwithagradeofA‐C,6creditswillbeawardedforeachexaminationand,when
possible,theywillbetransferredasaspecificcoursefromtheuniversitycurriculum.
ForA‐LevelpassedwithagradeofD‐E,3creditswillbeawardedforeachexaminationandwillbe
transferredasGeneralDistributionRequirements,namely:ComputerScience,FineArts,
Humanities,Language,ScienceorSocialSciences.ForAS‐levels,3creditswillbeawardedforeach
examinationpassed.
*ForspecificequivalenciespleaserefertotheA‐Levelsequivalencychart.
BTECNationals
CreditisgrantedforapprovedBTECexaminationstakenatLevels3through6.Officialscoresmust
be submitted directly by Edexcel to JCU for evaluation. Examinations cannot be evaluated from
collegetranscripts.
3 credits are granted for BTEC examinations passed with a grade of Merit and above.
 BTECqualificationsatLevel3willbetransferredastheequivalentofAdvancedPlacement
qualifications(suchasAPexamsandA‐Levels).Studentsmayberequiredtotakeaplacement
examinationforMathandEnglishComposition.
 BTECqualificationsatLevel4andabovewillbetransferreddirectlywithacourseequivalent
fromouracademiccurriculum.Noplacementexaminationswillberequired.
TransferCreditfromInternationalInstitutions
Transfercreditisonlyconsideredfrominternationalcolleges/universitiesthatarerecognizedbythe
Ministry of Education, or a similar accrediting body, in the home country. In order to qualify for
transfer credit, courses completed at recognized international tertiary institutions must be
applicabletothestudent'sdegreeandcomparabletothenature,contentandqualityofJCUcourses.
AnofficialcopyofthetranscriptmustbepresentedtotheRegistrar’sOfficeforworktobeofficially
evaluated for transfer credit. A certified translation must accompany transcripts not issued in
English.Thetranslationshouldbeliteralandnotinterpretive.Ifcoursecontentisnotevidentfrom
course titles on the transcript, students should be prepared to provide official catalog course
descriptionsfromtheirschoolsorfacultiesaswellasdetailedsyllabi.
The completion of rigorous secondary school subjects is expected of all admission candidates‐
internationalanddomesticalike.Transfercreditisnotawardedforsecondaryschoolsubjectsunless
anadditional13thyearofsecondaryschoolwascompletedand/orastandardizedexaminationwas
administered.ExamplesmightincludetheBritishAdvancedLevel(A‐Level)examinationsaswellas
secondaryschooldiplomasfromDenmark,Norway,FinlandandSweden.

educationqualificationsthatareeligiblefortransfercredit.
In many cases, international credits will have to be converted into the U.S. semester system. All
coursesconsideredfortransfermustbecompletedwithaCorbettergrade.TheRegistrar’sOffice
willdeterminetheinternationalgradeequivalenciesaswellastheconversionintotheU.S.semester
system.
CourseWorkRequiringAdditionalReview
Thefollowingcourseworkwillrequireadditionalinformationbeforeadecisioncanbemadeon

 Workshops
 Militarycredit
 Professionalprograms
TransferCreditfromItalianLiceo
TransfercreditswillbeawardedtoallstudentswhohavecompletetheirhighschoolinanItalian
Liceo,havesustainedtheMaturitàfinalexaminationandhaveobtainedanofficialDiploma.The
totalnumberofcreditsgranteduponentryatJCUwillvarydependingontheindirizzooftheLiceo
attended(i.e.Scientifico,Classico,etc…)

CourseworkNotAcceptedforTransferCredit
