An annotated exemplar is an extract of student evidence, with a commentary, to explain key
aspects of the standard. It assists teachers to make assessment judgements at the grade
boundaries.

Grade: Achieved
1.
For Achieved, the student needs to write two basic texts on very familiar topics.
This involves:

ensuring that the content relates to the topic of each written text
using text structure which is appropriate to the text type
using basic language features appropriate to the text type
using vocabulary relevant to the topic and appropriate to the sentence
structure
conveying the meaning of each written text, although there may be some
errors and inaccuracies.
The student has written a personal recount about a school trip to Hobbiton. The
original text contained ten sentences; seven sentences are included in this extract.
Content is relevant and text structure is appropriate to the recount text type, with an
orientation, events retold in chronological order and a re-orientation (1).
Basic language features appropriate to the recount text type are used. Although
there are run-on and comma splice sentences (2), there are sufficient correctly
punctuated complete simple sentences in the original text for Achieved. The correct
use of compound sentences using ‘and’ moves beyond level 1 sentence structure
requirements. Pronouns, singular and plural nouns and simple past tense verb
forms (3) are used accurately throughout.
Basic vocabulary relevant to the topic is used accurately in terms of word choice
and grammatical form.
The meaning of the text is conveyed, with minimal inaccuracies in punctuation.

for Achieved, in spite of some inappropriate word choices in collocations,
inaccuracies in grammatical form, notably singular and plural use, and in parts of
speech (3).
For a more secure Achieved, there need to be fewer inaccuracies in vocabulary use.

On Saturday I went to Rotorua with my friends in school trip. In the morning we were in good
cloths like long pants, sneaker for playing luge. […] When we got in to Rotorua we visited
Rainbow Spring first to play Big Splash and saw Kiwi birds. After that we had to ride gondola
to get to the place to play luge. At last we went to Rotorua town to eat dinner and back to our
school safety. I enjoyed my school trip.

using vocabulary relevant to the topic and appropriate to the sentence
structure
conveying the meaning of each written text, although there may be some
errors and inaccuracies.
The student has written a personal recount about a school celebration service. The
original text contained seven sentences; six sentences are included in this extract.
Content is relevant and text structure is appropriate to the recount text type, with an
orientation, events generally retold in chronological order and a re-orientation (1).
Basic language features appropriate to the recount text type are used. Complete
simple sentences are used accurately, as well as two compound sentences.
Pronouns and simple past tense verb forms (2) are used accurately throughout, as
are singular and plural noun forms. Apart from one comma splice sentence,
punctuation at sentence level is accurate and commas are also used accurately in
the list of song titles. However, overuse of upper case letters is frequent (3).
Sufficient control of basic vocabulary relevant to the topic has been demonstrated
for Achieved, in terms of word choice and grammatical form, with inaccuracies
limited to the spelling in some song titles (4).
To reach Achieved, more accurate use of letter case is required.

Service is tradition of ZGHS. ZGHS Celebration Service Started at 7:00Pm and Finished at
9:30Pm. Whole school sang Songs. I am Women, Happy, Little talk, Welcome table, Roar,
the school song, Wake me up, March on my Soul, Choirs, Hark the Hearled Angels sing and
Chirstmas vesper. […] There many things happened but I couldn’t see anything except year
13 medley. Last week was an amazing night. I enjoyed my night at Holy Church.
