McCartney and James Bond get the Guns N’ Roses
treatment. This popular cover was released in 1991
at a time when G N’ R was probably the most famous
band on the planet. This is naturally a heavier version
than the 1972 original but they still captured a lot of
the song’s underlying humour and playfulness. The
song features a mix of regular and half-time grooves
along with a reggae-inspired middle section requiring
the drummer to be alert and keep it tight. The player
featured here is Matt Sorum.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Matt Sorum’s big rock sound in Guns N’ Roses
tends to obscure other aspects of his playing. His
background as a jazz drummer and overall playing
ability mark him out as a serious technician. The live
versions of the song show him in complete command
of the changes in tempo and feel between each of the
sections, leaving plenty of room for full-on rock fills.
NOTES
Sorum replaced Steve Adler in the G N’ R
drummer’s seat in 1989 and stayed with them for
seven years before Axl Rose decided to fire all the
members who remained in the mid 1990s. Sorum
remained faithful to guitarist Slash and played in the
latter’s Velvet Revolver band. Prior to that, Sorum
was a regular guest drummer for The Cult and played
drums for a very young Tori Amos on her first tour.
More recently Sorum has contributed to a Buddy Rich
tribute album which showcased his technical abilities
in jazz drumming.
RECOMMENDED LISTENING
The G N’ R legacy is based on six studio albums
of which the most important by far is their debut,
Appetite for Destruction (1987). This record single
handedly propelled the band to superstardom and
featured classic tracks such as ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’,
‘Paradise City’, ‘Nightrain’ and ‘Welcome to the Jungle’.
The huge commercial success of this record (the best
selling debut album ever recorded) was followed by
GNR Lies (1988) and the double release, Use Your
Illusion I and II which came at a time when late 80s
hard rock was about to be obliterated by the grunge
movement and Nirvana.
Their latest album, Chinese Democracy, released in
2008, took nearly 10 years to record and features none
of the original line up other than Axl Rose.

‘Sex on Fire’ was the first single from Kings of
Leon’s fourth album, the multi platinum Only by the
Night. It achieved the number one spot in the UK
singles chart and is one of the most downloaded
tracks in the UK, The song’s syncopated main riff
drives the song along and requires drummer Nathan
Followill to shift feel both within and between verses
and choruses, making it a tricky song to play live.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The Kings of Leon Brothers Caleb, Jared and
Nathan (Matthew is their cousin) were raised by their
itinerant preacher father Ivan Leon, whose ‘kings’ they
are. As a tribute, the band members are also known
by their middle christian names.
NOTES
Kings of Leon made a radical change in their
direction when they recorded Only by the Night. As
singer and guitarist Caleb Followill explained in an
interview: ‘we knew this record was definitely gonna
be our bold attempt at trying to make a record that
wasn’t necessarily obviously Kings of Leon’.
They opted not to use producer Ethan Johns, who
had worked on all their previous efforts, turning
instead to Grammy Award winner Jacquire King, a
long time exponent of analogue recording techniques.
RECOMMENDED LISTENING
Kings of Leon’s debut album Youth and Young
Manhood (2003) has a raw, ‘band in a room’ vibe,
and is a far cry from their slicker, though no less
impressive, later efforts. ‘Molly’s Chambers’ has very
a simple and instantly recognisable riff. ‘Happy Alone’
is a driving track with excellent interplay between
all the instruments. Aha Shake Heartbreak (2004)
saw the band moving away from their southern rock
roots towards a more commercial sound. The singles,
‘Kings of the Rodeo’, ‘Four Kicks’ and ‘The Bucket’ are
the highlights.
Aside from ‘Sex on Fire’, Only by the Night features
the mega hit ‘Use Somebody’. The track switches
effortlessly between sparse verses and epic, wall of
sound choruses.
