PAGE 3 E T LA NEW S LETT ER JANU AR Y 200 9 2009 Rothrock Lecture/Dinner Dr. Michael Lofaro Discusses James Agee Work Speaker: Michael Lofaro Title: Revision of James Agee’s A Death in the Family Date: Thursday, April 23rd Time: 6:00-8:30 p.m. Place: Naples Restaurant 5500 Kingston Pike Knoxville, TN 37919 (865) 584-5033 and other materials in a restoration of the work more in accord with Agee’s original vision that Lofaro published in 2007. Michael Lofaro is the Lindsay Young professor of English at the University of Tennessee and the editor of the 10-volume The Works of James Agee to be published by The University of Tennessee Press with a target completion date of 2015. Lofaro theorizes that other works by Agee were modified or suppressed because of the political mood of mid-20th century America. In 1988, a book dealer offered papers left by Agee’s editor to The University of Tennessee Special Collections Library. Special Collections contacted Lofaro because he is a manuscript appraiser. In the collection, Lofaro discovered two chapters that appeared to have been written for inclusion in Agee’s posthumously published novel, A Death in the Family. At that time, the trustee of the Agee materials refused to allow the papers to be published. Thirteen years later, after a new trustee was appointed, Lofaro was Michael Lofaro allowed to incorporate these chapters Naples Restaurant 5500 Kingston Pike Knoxville, TN 37919 (865) 584-5033 Special Collections has designated the Agee collection as one of only two collections that receive priority collection emphases. As new materials are published or rare and out-of-print items on the subject of James Agee become available, they are purchased. James Agee was born in 1909 and as we celebrate the centennial of his birth, we hope that you will join ETLA at this exciting Rothrock Lecture and dinner at Naples Restaurant.
