In 1991, one had to work on average 27 minutes to buy a kilogram of brown
bread. What about today?
25th Anniversary of Slovenia' s Independence
With average monthly net earnings one could buy 397 kilograms of brown bread in 1991; twenty-four
years later 145 kilograms more. Buying one kilogram of brown bread in 1991 required 27 minutes of
working time; in 2015, 8 minutes less.
At this year’s Statehood Day, the 25th anniversary of the declaration of independence of Slovenia, we
collected a variety of interesting statistics from different fields of life from before and after independence.
However, we wish to point out that due to different methodologies and methods of data collection some of
the data are not comparable with more recent data or are no longer collected. We are publishing them
nevertheless, because they are interesting and telling. Please follow the advice.
Then and now
In 1991, Slovenia was divided into 62 municipalities. In 2016 there are 150 more.

Culture: book production per 100,000 population has doubled
In 1991, 4 feature films were created in Slovenia; in 2014 15 (11 feature films and four documentaries). In
1991, films in cinemas were attended by 1.8 million visitors; in 2014 by 1.9 million, which is a reflection of the
development of information technology. Attendance did not change much because the development of
information technology brought a greater opportunity for watching films at home.
In 1991, Slovenia published 123 books per 100,000 population; in 2015 the figure was 239 per 100,000
population.
Employment: fewer job seekers up to 26 years of age than over two decades ago
In December 1991 there were around 675,900 persons in paid employment in enterprises and other
organizations (excluding private ones) in Slovenia. According to the Statistical Register of Employment, the
number in December 2015 was more than 714,500.
According to the Employment Service of Slovenia, in December 1991 there were around 91,200 registered
job seekers, 64.4% more than a year earlier. Of the total number of unemployed persons, 45.6% of job
seekers were younger than 26 years. Twenty-four years later, in December 2015, there were more than
113,000 registered unemployed persons, of whom 11.4% were younger than 26 years.
According to the Pension and Disability Insurance Institute, in 1991 the ratio between the average number of
insured persons and the average number of pensioners was 2.08 to 1; in 2015 it was 1.37 to 1.
Earnings: for some purchases we can work less and buy more
In 1991, average monthly net earnings amounted to SIT 10,322, so one could buy 397 kilograms of brown
bread or 85 kilograms of beef with bone. To buy a kilogram of brown bread one had to work 27 minutes and
to buy a kilogram of beef with bone 124 minutes. For comparison, in 2015, with average monthly net
earnings one could buy 542 kilograms of brown bread or 125 kilograms of beef with bone. For a kilogram of
brown bread one had to work 8 minutes less than in 1991 and for a kilogram of beef with bone 43 minutes
less than in 1991.
Fewer marriages and more divorces
In 1991, the mean age of grooms was 28.6 years; brides were on average 3 years younger. In 2014, the
mean age of grooms was 34.5 years; brides were on average 2.7 years younger. In 1991, around 8,200
couples were married in Slovenia; in 2014 around 1,600 fewer.
Most men who married in 1991 were miners, industrial workers and related workers and most women who
married in 1991 were experts and artists. Around 800 (or 10%) of marriages were concluded between men
and women from these two occupational groups.
In 1991, around 1,800 couples in Slovenia were divorced; in 2014 around 640 more.

Average monthly net earnings of managers and average monthly net earnings of cleaners in 1991 stood at a
ratio of 4 to 1. In 2014, under the current Classification of Occupations, the relationship between legislators,
senior officials and managers (occupational group 1) and elementary occupations (occupational group 9)
was about 3 to 1.
At the time Slovenia won independence about 1,400,000 tourist arrivals were recorded and in 2015 around
three times more.
In 1991, the average apartment size was 69 square metres and in 2014 almost 81 square metres. The
number of persons in the average apartment decreased from 3.1 in 1991 to 2.4 in 2014.
These are only some of the data for which one can learn many interesting facts about the life of people in
Slovenia. At the 25th anniversary of Slovenia’s independence a lot more interesting data were collected and
published on the SI-STAT Data Portal.
