Young1996 - 1997 Mrs. Ben Williams 1997-1999 Mrs. Betty Bullock 1999- 2000 Historical Overview On October 18, 1895, Mrs. Henry A. Kidder and Mrs. Henry Hornblower, members of the Orpheus and Othello Club met to plan The Arlington Woman’s Club with Mrs. Kidder declaring, “that the time had come when Arlington women should take their rightful place in this municipal idea.” An invitation was issued to the women of Arlington through the Arlington Advocate, the local newspaper. The organizational meeting, held at Mrs. Peter Schwamb’s home resulted in such a large crowd that women spilled out the doors and onto the front lawn. Miss Ida Robbins offered the use of her larger house across Massachusetts Avenue, and 162 women marched en masse to the Robbins mansion to sign the constitution of The Arlington Woman’s Club. Careful to follow a strict organizational structure, the club was efficiently organized with twelve sub-committees focusing on amateur theatricals, the study of art, professional music concerts, birding, cooking and the study of civic affairs. The club was formed to enable "Social intercourse, self-improvement and the promotion of efficiency” for the women of Arlington. The executive committee, whose first chair was Ida F. Robbins, consisted of 12 women, who with the elected officers constituted the Board of Directors. Meeting procedural rules followed Mrs. Harriet Shattuck's Manual of Parliamentary Law. The Arlington Woman’s Club met monthly as a whole to hear lectures by such luminaries as Julia Ward Howe , Dr. G.Stanley Hall, and Booker T. Washington. Between 1900 and 1940, the Arlington Woman’s Club remained a potent cultural force in Arlington. They claimed 500, 600, and then peaked at 800 members with a wait list. One of the first votes taken was to join the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs organized in 1890. Through their state and national organization membership, the Arlington women supported humanitarian Progressive Era legislation. The list of Community groups and programs they initiated is long and impressive: 1903-05 Arlington Visiting Nurses Association 1911 Sunday Afternoon Forum featuring speakers such as Julia Ward Howe and Booker T. Washington 1912 Supported Bills to benefit neglected children 1913 Produced the 1913 Pageant to celebrate Robbins Memorial Town Hall 1921 1914 1918 1922 1923 1930-31 1934 Formed Girl Scout Council Sold stamps and bonds to support war effort Started Scholarship Program Founded the Arlington Friends of the Drama Started Arlington Chapter in support of Florence Crittendon League Originated Arlington Garden Club Began Arlington Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus Women’s Club members supported creation Boy’s Club 1939-41 Introduced evening courses resulting in Adult Community Education Program 1959 Originated program to honor Arlington High School Boy and Girl of the Month AWC former President, Mrs. Einar Larson, chosen Massachusettts Mother Of the Year 1965 Mrs. Americo (Irene) Chaves of Arlington elected President Massachusetts State Woman’s Club 1970 Copies of Woman Club slide set on Arlington history, Arlington,Yesterday and Today given to each town elementary school. 1980 Raised money for Hugh/O Brian Youth Foundation dedicated to teaching students leadership skills 1995 AWC celebrates its Centennial Anniversary 2000 Club disbands Scope and Content 17 Linear feet 15 Boxes (3 are Oversize Flat Boxes) The Arlington Woman’s Club disbanded in 2000, Mrs. Betty Bullock, the Arlington Woman’s Club final president, donated the club papers, scrapbooks, and artifacts to the Robbins Library Local History Room.
