After studying Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, I have come to the conclusion that the three peop
le most to blame for the witch hysteria and the subsequent death of innocent people are Reverend Par
ris, Abigail, and Danforth. Each of these people, in some way caused harm to blameless people, and
I will, in this essay explain what these people, knowingly or unknowingly did contribute to the deat
h of the innocent people hanged as witches in Salem Village in 1692. Reverend Parris was most respon
sible for the Salem Witch hysteria. Reverend Parris was spying on Abigail when he saw the girls dan
cing in the forest in the middle of the night. He told Abigail that this would harm is position in
the town and that she must do something about this. So Abigail went and accused the other women of
witchcraft starting with Tituba. In addition, during the trials Reverend Parris took every attempt
to end the court with the truth, such as Proctor attempted too, he would call it an attack on the c
ourt. He would not let the court hear the truth that could set innocent people free and also show t
hat Abigail was in fact dancing in the woods out of her own free will. Reverend Parris in covering
up his house's name led to many innocent deaths. Abigail was also responsible for the tragedy. She h
ad many options in ways she could have explained the dancing in the woods. In the end she decided t
o turn the accusation of witchcraft on the people she didn't like. She decided her personal interes
ts were more important than the other peoples' innocent lives. Another reason she is to blame is be
cause she didn't rest with the accusation against the person. In court she would pretend that they
were choking her with their spirit. She led the other girls to follow in her example and accuse oth
ers and pretend they were attacking them. Abigail led a task force against the people of Salem with
their own interests in mind. Lastly, Danforth is responsible for the hanging of innocent people as
witches. He was the Judge in the Salem witch trials. Throughout the trial he would believe that th
e accused persons spirits was choking the girls, with no proof of it at all. They could make a garg
ling noise and that would prove that the defendant was a witch. He didn't use common sense at all i
n the trial. Also when someone testified truth he would not believe them. Mary Warren had nothing
to gain by admitting that she was faking the attacks, along with the other girls. She was in troubl
e either way for lying under oath. Danforth wouldn't call off the other cases or stop people from b
eing hung even with Solid evidence that they were innocent. In conclusion, there are three people wh
o are most to blame for the hanging of innocent people during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. These
three people were Reverend Parris, Abigail, and Danforth. Each of these three knowingly or unknowi
ngly caused the witch hysteria to grow and contribute tot he hanging deaths of the men and women dur
