Activity 21
MASTER
NOTE Students decide how the capacity of a
container compares to a given unit.
Hold up the pint-size carton. How many cups of water do you think this pint carton
will hold? Have students complete the following sentence written on the board:
cups will fill the 1-pint carton.
How many pints do you think it will take to fill a quart carton? How many quarts
do you think it will take to fill a gallon container? Demonstrate each situation with
containers and water.
If you had to use one of these containers (cup, pint, quart, or gallon) to fill a
bathtub, which would you use?
Now let’s pour the water from a quart container into a liter container. What does
this show about the size of a quart compared to the size of a liter?

Predict about how many liters it will take to fill a gallon container. Demonstrate
with containers and water.
PR AC TICE
In the Activity 21 Master, students determine how the capacity of a container compares
to a given unit.
DIFFERENTIATION : Suppor ting the Range of Learner s
Explain that capacity is the amount of water or other material it takes to
fill a container. Explain that just as we can show length with equal measures (such as
12 inches ⫽ 1 foot), we can also show capacity with equal measures. Fill various
containers to show equal measures, such as 2 cups = 1 pint.
