documents are grammatically

TENSES of VERBS
There are two grammar issues most writers
have trouble with - tenses of verb and
subject-verb agreement. This part of
Module 2 will deal with discussion of
tenses of verb.
Modern English has two sets of tenses- the
simple tenses and the perfect tenses. Each
set has a corresponding continuous or
progressive tenses.

The Future Progressive Tense
The Future Progressive Tense
Definition: The Future Progressive tense is
a verb form used to indicate continuing
action, action or state that will be in
progress or will be happening at a
certain point or at some period of time
in the future.
The Future Progressive Tense
Format of Future Progressive Tense:
• will be + verb + -ing
o The financial consultant will be
coming to discuss your investment
portfolio.
• am +going to be+ verb+ -ing –used with
first person personal pronoun “I”
o I am going to be aspiring to become
a better person
The Future Progressive Tense
• is + going to be + verb + -ing is used
with all singular nouns and pronouns
o Miss Philippines-International is
going to be wearing Paul Cabral’s
creation in the contest.
o He is going to be designing the
gowns using the fine native
materials with elaborate
embroidery.
The Future Progressive Tense
• are + going to be + verb + -ing is used with the
pronoun “You” whether singular or plural, all
plural nouns and pronouns.
o Your parents must be very proud of you
since you are going to be representing the
country in the “Voice of Democracy”
competition in London. (singular You)
o Children, as a reward for perfect
attendance, you are going to be watching
the Lee Tang Hua Circus when it arrives next
week. (plural – You)

feeling excited once they watch the
first episode of Voltron: Legendary
Defender.
o While in Singapore, we are going
to be spending our time visiting the
tourists spots that the state is
famous for.

Conditions in the use of Future Progressive tense.
• to make a contrast between present event and
future event
oBy this time next week, Karla will be flying to
Bangkok for a modeling show.
o By this time tomorrow, Ronnie is going to be
meeting the manager of BDO.
• to make a prediction about the present
o My wife will be preparing our dinner now.
o Tina is going to be getting ready to go to the
office now.

• to indicate a longer action interrupted by a
shorter action
oMother will be feeding the baby when the
baby sitter arrives
oJessie will be studying for an exam when his
friends call on him
• to indicate a specific time as an interruption in
the future.
oTonight, at 9pm Elise will be calling her
father in the U.S.
oAt 9am the week , after election day, Konrad
is going to be attending a wedding
ceremony.
The Future Progressive Tense
• to indicate parallel action in the future –
expresses the idea that the two or more actions will
be taking place at the same time.
oNext week at this time, the husbands will be
having a night out, (will be) bonding with each
other and generally (will be) having a good time.
oMina will be doing several tasks at the same
time: she will be watching that the the stew will
not overflow; (will be) washing the plates used
during dinner and (will be) keeping an eye on
the sleeping baby.

• NOTE: Future Progressive Tense is not used in
Time Clauses beginning with time expression
such as: when, while, before, after, by the time,
as soon as. When using these time expression,
the Present Progressive tense or Simple Present
tense is used.
o I will be doing my homework when
Mother is preparing our dinner.
o By the time 9 o’clock comes, Jancy will be
preparing for bed.
