ArcGIS 10.1 - ArcInfo Desktop Installation Instructions ArcGIS support at UEA is provided by Katy Appleton (research officer) in ENV and Flo Harrison (senior research associate) in MED. They can both be contacted on [email protected]. Please be aware that this is not a helpdesk service and an instant response is not usually possible. 1. Pre-installation notes General notes If you are an Active Directory (staff desktop) user, please install via the UEA Application Catalogue or contact your departmental IT support for assistance. This document relates to installation on a non-AD machine only. You will need administrator rights to install the software. Any firewall software and similar security controls may need to be switched off. Minimum PC specification: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/systemrequirements/10.1/index.html#//015100000002000000 or http://tinyurl.com/arcgis101sysreq The installation files are available on the UEA network, on UEAShare. To access UEAShare (on campus or via VPN (see p2) only), map a network drive to \\util-vfs.uea.ac.uk\ueashare. If you need to log in, use your UEA username prefixed by uea\ (e.g. uea\e999) and your usual UEA password. The files can then be found under: arcgis/ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 > run Setup.exe Due to the large size of the installation files, installing from UEAShare over campus wifi or VPN may be unreliable, depending on signal strength and connection speed. It is recommended that you physically connect your computer to the campus network if at all possible. If you cannot connect to UEAShare, you should talk to the IT Helpdesk. If needed, you can borrow a DVD but there are very few of these and there may be a waiting list. The UEA license agreement permits use of the software by students and staff at UEA, for academic purposes, within the UK. For overseas use, permission must be granted by ESRI on a yearly basis - please email [email protected] for a request form. Note that it may take up to two weeks to obtain permission, so do this as soon as your work abroad is being planned. Use by other people, by staff/students who have left UEA, or for non-academic purposes, is forbidden. The UEA GIS User Group was set up in 2011, to strengthen the GIS community at UEA and share experience. The main resource is a Blackboard site, where you can find documents, links, and a discussion board for help. To join, please email your UEA username (e.g. abc11stu) to [email protected]. Once you have been added, you can find the group on your Portal home page. Occasional announcements about ArcGIS will also be made by email to members of this group, so it is highly recommended that you join. ArcGIS installation instructions v5, March 2014 – Katy Appleton 1 Technical notes Virtual Private Networking (VPN) If you work off-campus but are able to connect to the UEA campus network via VPN, you can use the campus licensing for ArcGIS. Most broadband users should be able to use VPN simply by going to https://vpn.uea.ac.uk and logging in with their UEA username and password. For more information, talk to the IT Helpdesk or see http://www.uea.ac.uk/is/networking/remoteaccess/vpn/ There is a known problem where VPN users cannot obtain a licence in real-time, but can borrow a licence. See p4 for further details on licensing. Supported operating systems ArcGIS 10.1 is supported on Windows XP, Vista and 7. It does not yet make full use of 64-bit operating systems. ArcGIS is not supported natively on Macs but may be run using Parallels or similar; however, no UEA support is available for setting up ArcGIS on such a system. Due to the variation in individual systems, it is not possible to guarantee that ArcGIS will work on any computer. Best efforts will be made to assist users, including use of ESRI technical support where needed. If ArcGIS use is critical to a particular project, please install and test the software on the desired machine as soon as possible. 64-bit PCs (e.g. Athlon64 processors) On some 64-bit PCs a setting needs to be altered before installation: Right-click on My Computer; select Properties > Advanced Under Start-up/Recovery options click on Settings. Look for Default Operating System options, then click on Edit. Change to /NoExecute = OptIn /NoExecute = AlwaysOff Save the changes and reboot your computer before installing ArcGIS. Once ArcGIS has been installed, change this setting back to OptIn and reboot again. Upgrading from a previous version to 10.1 If you already have an earlier version of ArcGIS installed, you must remove it from your machine before installing 10.1. There may be multiple ESRI and ArcGIS components listed – remove them all. If you have non-ESRI ArcGIS toolkits or accessories installed, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions as to whether they are compatible with v10.1. If in doubt it may be best to remove everything and start from scratch. See the Resources section of the UEA GIS User Group site for a wide range of links to documents, tutorials and videos that will help you get started with v10.1. ArcGIS installation instructions v5, March 2014 – Katy Appleton 2 2. Installing ArcGIS Desktop Insert the DVD or run ESRI.exe from UEAShare (as per page 1) to access the main installation menu: If you have ever used ArcGIS before on this computer, click on Detect Conflicts. This will tell you of any previous versions of the software and related components, and allow you to uninstall them. Not doing so may cause the installation to fail. To install the software, choose the Setup option next to ArcGIS Desktop 10.1. Carry on through two prompt screens about closing down all other applications and accepting the licence agreement. When given the choice between Complete and Custom installations, choose the Complete option. Then accept the default locations for installation. (Only change them if absolutely necessary, and if you do, follow the restrictions on where Python can be installed – this component is essential to ArcGIS tools). The installation process will now run. When you click OK on the pop-up box that says it has finished, you will be taken to the Authorisation Wizard to set up your licensing – see page 4. ArcGIS installation instructions v5, March 2014 – Katy Appleton 3 3. Licensing ArcGIS The final part of the installation process covers licensing. Your computer needs to be licensed to use the ArcGIS software, and there are three ways to do this. To work out which option you need, please follow the flow chart, and then read on for relevant instructions: Will your computer be directly connected to the UEA network when using ArcGIS? Yes, always Will your computer be connected to the internet when using ArcGIS? No, never Yes, sometimes Yes, sometimes Yes, always No, never Use VPN to connect to the UEA network from elsewhere Will you connect to the UEA network at least once every 30 days? Yes Use realtime campus licensing I cannot use VPN No Use licence borrowing ArcGIS installation instructions v5, March 2014 – Katy Appleton Use a standalone licence 4 Note: in version 10.1 this box now refers to ArcGIS Basic, Standard or Advanced – choose Advanced. See below for the difference between Single Use and Concurrent. Real-time campus licensing Make sure you have an active connection to the campus network, either direct or via VPN (see note below re. VPN). Go to Start > All programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator Click on Desktop in the left-hand panel Select ArcGIS Advanced (Concurrent Use) on the right-hand panel Click Change to enter (exactly) uealicsvr01.uea.ac.uk in the License Manager box Click OK. Assuming no error message appears, you can now click OK again to close ArcGIS Administrator, and use ArcGIS. If an error message appears, double-check your network connection. If it persists, and you are sure you are connected to the UEA network, contact the IT helpdesk to check if there is a problem with the licence server on rclogin.uea.ac.uk. Note There is a known issue with VPN-based realtime licensing, causing a timeout when opening any ArcGIS element (setting the Licence Manager in ArcGIS Administrator appears to work correctly, but ArcMap, ArcCatalog etc. will fail to open). To work around this, use Licence Borrowing for now. Borrowing a licence over VPN does not suffer from the timeout problem, and opening the software will use the borrowed licence. You will need to renew the borrowed licence every 30 days. Make sure you disconnect from the VPN before trying to use ArcGIS with a borrowed licence. ArcGIS installation instructions v5, March 2014 – Katy Appleton 5 Licence borrowing A borrowed licence lets you use the software without a network connection, and is valid for 30 days. When it expires, you will need a network connection to borrow another one. To extend a licence (e.g. if you have 10 days left but will not be on the network again for 14 days), you need to return the current licence and borrow a new one, to give you another 30 days. Borrowing and returning can only be done when connected to the campus network, either directly or via VPN. If you have not already done so, set your system to use the campus licence server as follows: Either: make sure you have an active, direct connection to the campus network or make sure you have an active internet connection and have connected to the UEA VPN via https://vpn.uea.ac.uk. If you get an error message at this point, see p5 for troubleshooting tips. Now borrow a licence: Click on Borrow/Return in the left land panel Tick the boxes next to ArcInfo Desktop and any extensions you wish to use Click Apply To return a licence before the 30-day period is up: Click on Borrow/Return in the left land panel Untick all the boxes Click Apply To check the expiry date of borrowed licences, click on Availability in the left hand panel. Click OK to close ArcGIS Administrator Standalone licensing For longer-term off-network use, a standalone licence is available. Contact [email protected] to request a single-use licence file. When you receive it (by email), save it to your computer and then: Go to Start > All programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator Click on Desktop in the left-hand panel Click ArcGIS Advanced (Single Use) on the right-hand panel Click the Authorize Now... button and follow the prompts. Single-use licences will expire at the end of the current campus licence period (August 2014). New ones can usually be requested up to 2 weeks before this date. If this expiry date causes a problem (e.g. you will be uncontactable on fieldwork but require software access), contact [email protected] to discuss your needs. If you use a standalone licence and your period of employment, or student registration, with UEA expires before the end of the current campus licence period, you must uninstall the software. ArcGIS installation instructions v5, March 2014 – Katy Appleton 6 4. Updating ArcGIS Patches and service packs (updates to fix problems) for ArcGIS can be found on the ESRI website. The installation files on UEAShare (or the DVD) only contain the software as originally released – you must install the relevant patches as well. When new patches are released, they will be announced on the UEA GIS User Group (see p1). http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=downloads.patchesServicePacks.gateway lists all of them. You can restrict your search by product type (ArcInfo Desktop) and version (10.1). Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the patch/es – they should be straightforward. Note that each Service Pack includes all the previous updates as well, i.e. if you install SP2 you do not need to worry about SP 1. Note: If you have installed Paint Shop Pro on your machine, the patch (.msp) file may no longer be correctly recognised as a patch. To work around this, see: http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=knowledgebase.techarticles.articleShow&d=23789 http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=knowledgebase.techarticles.articleShow&d=27413 If you still have problems, try running the patch manually. Open a DOS prompt (go to Start > Run > type “cmd” (no quotes) and press Enter) and type the following (all on one line): msiexec /p [location of .msp file]\[patchname].msp REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=omus For the parts in bold above, replace them with the relevant file path and name for where you saved the .msp file, e.g. C:\Temp\ArcGISDesktop91sp2.msp If you still have problems, try the ESRI support website – see p12 of this document. 5. Productivity Suite This is an extension specific to ESRI UK. You will need to install Productivity Suite if you wish to use Ordnance Survey data downloaded from the Digimap service. Productivity Suite replaces MapManager, which is no longer supported. The installation files can be accessed via UEAShare (currently no DVD copies are held). They are located in arcgis\productivity suite v2.3 for arcgis 10.1 Run the file named ProductivitySuite23.msi and accept all the default settings. When the software has installed, go to Start > Productivity Suite 2.3 > Licence Manager. Click on the Import Licence button and go to the Licence File folder within the Productivity Suite directory on UEAShare. Select the XML file (the only file in there) to complete the licensing process. You can now access Productivity Suite functions from ArcMap, ArcCatalog, etc. ArcGIS installation instructions v5, March 2014 – Katy Appleton 7 6. General support The two most common queries: If you are told you don’t have a particular extension licence when you try and use a tool (e.g. Spatial Analyst tools), check you have activated that extension via Customize > Extensions on the menu. If data doesn’t appear where you expect it to, compared to other data, check the spatial reference (coordinate system or projection) of each dataset. If necessary, read the ESRI help on projections and coordinate systems – this is an important concept for you to understand. http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html?TopicName=A bout_coordinate_systems_and_map_projections#/Georeferencing_and_coord inate_systems/00v20000000q000000/ or http://tinyurl.com/cmhqmcp For all other queries, please make use of the discussion boards on the UEA GIS User Group (see p1) with any queries. This enables multiple people to potentially help you, and makes sure that solutions are available for others to see. Remember that anyone can access the ESRI support forums at http://support.esri.com – it requires registration, but it is free. You can search the forum archives, and solutions can often be found this way. You can also post your own questions. Access to individual support from ESRI (by telephone or email) is restricted. If you cannot find a solution to your problem by other means, email [email protected] and you can be put in direct contact with an ESRI tech support analyst. Whenever you request help, and whoever you request it from, be as specific as possible: the exact text of any error messages (screenshots are fine) exactly what you do to make the error appear (repeat the process to be sure it can be replicated, rather than just being a one-off random error) the version of ArcGIS and whether you have the latest Service Pack (if not, why not?) the version of Windows (or what else you are running if not Windows, e.g. Mac + Parallels) if the problem is with licensing or starting the software, state whether you are using real-time licensing, licence borrowing, or standalone licensing if the problem is with data or analysis/tool output, be as specific as you can about the data format and source. Please don’t just say that “it doesn’t work” – you’ll only get asked all the above questions, so help us solve the problem more quickly by answering them up front!
