Bingham Young and his followers settled in Salt Lake City, Utah to practice their
Mormon religion.
Wyoming Territory became the first place in the United States to allow women to
vote and hold office.
Jeannette Rankin of Montana became the first woman elected to Congress.
Mountain Challenges:
*mountain areas have limited space to build cities
*mountains block radio and television signals
*travel can be dangerous
People now use satellites to send signals over mountains.
Satellite – an object that orbits Earth
GPS – Global Positioning System – system of satellites and computers can show a
person or object’s exact location. This is especially helpful to locate people who
became lost or stranded.
GPS makes mountain travel safer.
Denver, Colorado and Las Vegas, Nevada are the largest cities in the Mountain
states.

Denver:
*nicknamed “the Mile-High City” because its 5380 feet, or one mile above sea
level
*east of Rocky Mountains, just on the edge of the Great Plains
*this flat land location has allowed Denver to grow
*the city is the economic and transportation center of the region
*Capital of Colorado
Tourism:
*Mountains make tourism a leading industry
*All of the mountain states have ski resorts
*Many national parks, national forest, and state parks in this region
*Most of Yellowstone National Park is in Wyoming
Government:
*US government affects the economy of the Mountains states because it owns
large areas of land there
*owns 2/3 of Utah’s land
*owns 4/5 of Nevada’s land
*government land used by the military
*Colorado has many United States government offices and nicknamed
Washington of the West
*NORAD is in Colorado

NORAD – North American Aerospace Defense Command; it is the military that
works to protect the United States and Canada
High Technology:
*several Mountain states have growing high-tech industries
*High-tech businesses do work for the US government and the military
*high-tech businesses make computer products for consumers
*high-tech cities include Denver, Salt Lake City and Boise, Idaho which is also
Idaho’s state capital and largest city
Consumer – people who buy a product or a service
Alps :
* tallest mountains on the continent of Europe
*heavy snows bock roads
*people build houses with steep roofs so the snow slides off instead of piling up
and crushing the houses
*tourism, especially skiing, is an important industry in the Alps
