Equicel is prepared by oxidising a suitable form of
cellulose, natural cotton. Equitamp is prepared by
oxidising a suitable form of cellulose, pure viscose.
This is followed by additional processes in order to
obtain a pure and high-quality form of oxidised and
regenerated cellulose. It is strong and although a
slight discoloration may occur with age, this does
not affect performance.
Equicel / Equitamp is immediately available for use
in the operating theatre and does not require any
sterilisation by dry heat or autoclaving. Equicel /
Equitamp can be sutured or cut without fraying. The
products are double packed, double sterile.
Due to its neutral pH, Equicel does not inactivate
thrombin. Although Equitamp has a pH value just
below neutral (pH = 7.0), the lower Equitamp pH
value of pH = 5.5 – 6.0 has proven not to inactivate
thrombin.
With Equicel / Equitamp, haemostasis is achieved
within a few minutes. Once implanted into tissue,
Equicel / Equitamp are fully resorbed, independent
of the circumstances. In addition to its local
haemostatic properties, Equicel / Equitamp is a
proven bactericide in vitro against a wide range
of gram positive and gram negative organisms
including aerobes and anaerobes.
The main difference between Equitamp and Equicel
is that Equitamp is made from viscose (a more
velvet structure), whereas Equicel is made from
cotton. Besides this, Equicel has a neutral pH, pH
= 7.0, whereas Equitamp has an acidic pH value,
pH = 5.5. – 6.0. Due to the immediate hemostatic
effect of Equicel, Equicel can not be removed once
the bleeding has stopped. Equitamp however, can
be removed once bleeding has stopped.

Equispon is manufactured from purified gelatine
foam, which gives it a uniform porosity and reacts
neutrally. The dried foam is cut, packaged and
sterilised using gamma radiation. The radiation dose
used on Equispon is 2.5 Mrad (25 kGy). Equispon
is immediately available for use in the operating
theatre and does not require any sterilisation by
dry heat or autoclaving. The products are double
packed, double sterile. Equispon has demonstrated
to achieve haemostasis within a few minutes.
Equiwax®
Bone wax

Store under 25ºC
CE Class IIb registered
Bone wax is a sterile wax derived from beeswax
(Ph. Eur.) and is used to mechanically stop bone
bleeding during surgical procedures. Equiwax is
70% beeswax, and 30% vaseline. Equiwax is not
absorbed, but remains within the body. Equiwax
has been gamma sterilized, is soft and kneadable
and is ready to use. The products are double
packed, double sterile. Haemostasis time with
Equiwax is only a few minutes.
Equicel® - Equicel® Silk - Equitamp®
Equicel – Equicel Silk – Equitamp
Indication:
Equicel / Equitamp is used adjunctively in surgical procedures to assist
in the control of capillary, venous, and small arterial haemorrhages when
ligation or other conventional methods of control are impractical or
ineffective. Equicel / Equitamp can be cut to size for use in endoscopic
procedures. Equicel is also indicated for lumbar microdiscectomy.
Both types of Equicel micro are suitable for microsurgery.
With Equicel / Equitamp, haemostasis is achieved within a few
minutes. Equicel will achieve haemostasis quicker then Equitamp due
to the fact that Equicel has a higher density and is thicker. For the
same reasons, Equicel Silk will even achieve a quicker haemostasis
time then the normal Equicel, while Equicel Fibrillar has the quickest
haemostasis time.
Equicel / Equitamp can be used in many areas of surgery, e.g.
cardiovascular surgery, haemorrhoidectomy, implantation of vascular
prostheses, biopsies, lung operations, surgery to the face and jaw,
gastric resection, operations to the throat or nose, liver and gall bladder
operations, gynaecological operations, thoracic and abdominal
sympathectomies, neurosurgery, especially cerebral operations,
thyroid operations, skin transplants, treatment of superficial injuries.
Equicel / Equitamp is indicated also for adjunctive use in dental
applications to assist in the control of bleeding in exodontias and oral
surgery. It may also be used to help achieve haemostasis after single
or multiple tooth extractions, alveoloplasty, gingival haemorrhage,
impactions, biopsies, and other procedures in the oral cavity.
In addition to its local haemostatic properties, Equicel / Equitamp is a
proven bactericide in vitro against a wide range of gram positive and
gram negative organisms including aerobes and anaerobes.
Indication Equicel Powder:
Equicel sterile powder is indicated in cases where surgeons require
a powder haemostatic agent instead of a gauze or sponge. Equicel
powder has a strong haemostatic effect and has a high density. The
Equicel powder laparoscopic kit is available for use in laparoscopic
procedures.
EQUIME
Haemostatic mechanism:
When Equicel / Equitamp comes into contact with blood, it will absorb
the blood and gradually swell, eventually dissolving into a gelatinous
material. By briefly applying pressure at this point, the material will
adhere to the wound, effectively sealing the ends of the venous
capillaries and resulting in a mechanical haemostatic effect.
The coagulation cascade is activated, transforming soluble fibrinogen
into a net of insoluble fibrin which stops the bleeding. When implanted
into tissue, Equicel / Equitamp is absorbed within 5 - 8 days. Equicel /
Equitamp is completely bio-absorbable.
Mode of application:
Equicel / Equitamp may be used in dry form or after immersion in
physiological saline. Equicel / Equitamp must be pressed against the
haemorrhage site. The gauze may remain in situ (after strict aseptic
measures have been taken) and the wound may be closed since the
gauze completely decomposes within a one week.
Equicel / Equitamp does not provoke any harmful tissue reaction or
any reaction of hypersensitivity. Due to its neutral pH, Equicel does
not inactivate thrombin. Although Equitamp has a pH value just below
neutral (pH = 7.0), the lower Equitamp pH value of pH = 5.5 – 6.0 has
proven not to inactivate thrombin.
Mode of application Equicel Powder:
Equicel sterile powder should not be saturated with sterile, isotonic
sodium chloride solution (sterile saline). Equicel powder should be
used dry. Equicel powder can be used straight out of the packaging
and sprayed directly on the site where haemostasis is required or used
directly in laparoscopic procedures.
Warning:
When placed into cavities or closed tissue spaces, minimal preliminary compression is
advised and care should be exercised to avoid overpacking (the gauze expands upon
absorption of liquid). Equicel / Equitamp may swell to its original size and absorbed
fluids may increase the risk of nerve damage. For this reason, Equicel / Equitamp
should not be used in eye surgery.
Due to the fact that Equicel / Equitamp may form a nidus for infection, it must not be
left in infected areas; it must be removed once bleeding has been controlled.
EDICAL®
Equispon
Indication:
Equispon is a local haemostatic sponge for use in surgical procedures
that involve venous bleeding and oozing where traditional haemostasis
is difficult or impractical and the use of non-absorbable materials is
undesirable. Equispon has demonstrated to achieve haemostasis
within a few minutes.
Haemostatic mechanism:
Equispon adheres to the bleeding site and absorbs approximately
50 times its own weight. Due to the uniform porosity of Equispon,
blood platelets are caught and the coagulation cascade is activated,
transforming soluble fibrinogen into a net of insoluble fibrin which
stops the bleeding. When implanted into tissue, Equispon is absorbed
within 2 - 3 weeks. Equispon is completely bio-absorbable.
Equispon® - Equiwax®
Contra-indication:
Equispon should not be used in closure of skin incisions because it may interfere with
the healing of skin edges.
Warning:
When placed into cavities or closed tissue spaces, minimal preliminary compression
is advised and care should be exercised to avoid overpacking (the sponge expands
upon absorption of liquid). Equispon may swell to its original size and the absorbed
fluids may increase the risk of nerve damage.
Equispon should be removed from the site of application when used in, around or in
proximity to foramina in bone, areas limited by bone, the spinal cord and/or the optic
nerve and chiasma.
Due to the fact that Equispon may form a nidus for infection, it must not be left in
infected areas; it must be removed once bleeding has been controlled.
Equiwax
Mode of application:
Equispon may be used in dry form or after immersion in physiological
saline which must be removed before the sponge is applied. Equispon
must be pressed firmly against the haemorrhage site. The sponge may
remain in situ (after strict aseptic measures have been taken) and the
wound may be closed, as the sponge completely decomposes within
a few weeks.
Equispon does not provoke any harmful tissue reaction or any reaction
of hypersensitivity. The advantage of Equispon is the ability to use it
simultaneously with antibiotics, chemotherapeutic medications or
thrombin without any reduction of the sponge’s haemostatic effect.
Indication:
Equiwax can be used in many surgical procedures for example in
orthopaedics and traumatology, in thoracic surgery (sternum and
ribs), in maxillofacial surgery, in general and plastic surgery and in
neurosurgery (trepanation). Haemostasis time with Equiwax is only a
few minutes.
Equispon Dental:
In oral and dental surgery, Equispon Dental aids haemostasis and
the obliteration of dead space created by the extraction of teeth, root
amputations and the removal of cysts, tumours and impacted teeth.
Mode of application:
It is recommended that the bone wax first be kneaded in the hand to
soften it, and then applied to the bone by using a spatula to staunch
the bleeding at the bone. Care should be taken to use as small a
quantity as possible, as otherwise regeneration of the bone can be
adversely affected.
Equispon Tampon:
The Equispon Tampon is inserted in dry form by means of a proctoscope
at the conclusion of surgery. Place a dry gauze within the natal cleft.
The buttocks must be kept together by means of an adhesive plaster,
then by a T-bandage. Bacterial invasion provokes rapid decomposition
of the sponge, causing it to disappear automatically. The Equispon
Tampon comes with an aperture through which a drain may be inserted
to eliminate the build-up of gas.
Haemostatic mechanism:
Equiwax does not possess any intrinsic pharmacological properties.
Equiwax is used to mechanically stop bone bleeding by occlusion of
intraosseous vessels.
Contra-indication:
Bone wax must not be applied to infected areas.
Warning:
Bone wax delays regeneration of bone and can cause foreign body and inflammatory
reactions.
