King William IV, Victoria’s uncle, died on June, 20 1837.
So, early that morning, she was told that she was the new
queen of England. At 11:00 a.m., she had her first meeting
with her chief ministers. Victoria’s closest friend and
advisor was the Prime Minister Lord Melbourne.
In 1839, Victoria received a visit from her cousin, Albert, a
German prince. They soon fell in love and they married in
February 1840 in London. At first, a lot of people distrusted
the prince because he was a foreigner. But Albert soon
became respected for his hard work, his interest in science,
arts and education. He encouraged the building of new
museums including the Natural History Museum in London.
Albert was Victoris’s private secretary.
The greatest tragedy of Victoria’s life happened in 1861:
Albert died of typhoid fever. After this, she rarely went out
in public. She wore black mourning clothes and spent a lot
of time at remote balmoral Castle in Scotland.
