Tesla recently showed drone footage of the construction progress of its
Gigafactory in Sparks with the plan to
produce at least 500,000 cars a year by
2018. While the main goal of the Gigafactory will be pumping out electric car
batteries at record speeds, construction
will not be completely finished for at
least a few more years.
The aerial views of the gigafactory
also come days before a Tesla Gigafactory Investor event scheduled for
Wednesday. The invite-only occasion
to be hosted at the gigafactory coincides
with the upcoming CES conference in
Las Vegas (regarded as the biggest technology and global consumer electronics tradeshow of the year).
The investor event will be organized
with a Q&A session featuring Tesla’s
CEO Elon Musk. It is speculated that
Tesla will announce the start of new
battery production, originally prom-
ised to begin by the end of 2016.
Even though CES will begin a day
later in Las Vegas, people on the invite
list will most likely make the detour up
to the Sparks gigafactory to see what’s
going on. Tesla does not plan to attend
CES as sources say it wants to have a
more hands-on way to showcase its
progress and accomplishments.
Tesla did not respond to requests for
more information, but, other sources

4 hurt in crash in Vegas
airport rental car return
center
LAS VEGAS — Authorities say
two pedestrians were badly hurt and
a couple from California received minor injuries in a New Years’ morning
crash in a vehicle return area at a Las
Vegas airport car rental center.
Las Vegas police say Isabel Auler
and Miriam Caguin, both 55, were
taken to Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center with serious injuries after
the crash about 10 a.m. Sunday at the
Hertz McCarran parking lot.
Police say a rented Hyundai Sonata
driven by 79-year-old Robert Stevens
of Long Beach, California, accelerated into the parking area on Gilespie
Street and struck four cars and the
two women.
Stevens and his passenger, 78-yearold Patricia Stevens, were taken to
Sunrise hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Police say Robert Stevens didn’t
appear to be impaired by alcohol or
drugs, and it wasn’t immediately clear
what caused the car to accelerate.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. —
Police in South Lake Tahoe are investigating a drive-by shooting at a motel
about a mile west of the casino strip
in Stateline, Nevada.
Police said Friday no one was hurt
in the shooting reported just before
10 p.m. Thursday at the Pioneer Inn
Motel on Pioneer Trail.
Witnesses say several young Hispanic males were in the dark-colored
pickup truck that stopped in the motel parking lot before one or more of
them starting shooting.
KTVN-TV in Reno reports (http://

to the mountain on New Year’s Day.
KVVU-TV reports that State Route

Heller says he’ll seek
re-election to Senate in 2018
LAS VEGAS — Nevada Republican Sen. Dean Heller announced
Thursday that he’ll seek re-election
to the Senate in 2018, ending speculation that he would run for governor.
Heller announced his plan in a
statement on Facebook and through
Twitter, saying he believed he could
have the biggest impact for Nevada if
he ran for re-election as Nevada’s senior senator.
“Serving as governor would be an
enormous honor, but I am looking
forward to being Nevada’s strongest
voice on Capitol Hill,” he wrote.
Heller has held the seat since 2011,
when he was appointed to finish the
term of Republican Sen. John Ensign
after Ensign resigned amid an ethics
investigation. He narrowly defeated
Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley for
the seat in 2012, becoming the only
Republican Senate candidate to win
that year in a state that President
Barack Obama carried.
Observers speculated whether
Heller would try to leverage his incumbency advantage to retain that
seat in 2018, or whether he would
return to Nevada and seek the governorship when popular but term-limited Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval
leaves office.
Even with Heller out, several other
Republicans are seen as potential gubernatorial contenders. They include
Attorney General Adam Laxalt,
whose campaign consultant didn’t
comment Thursday on Laxalt’s 2018
plan.
A representative for potential candidate Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchison also
declined to comment on his plans,
although Hutchison tweeted that he
was “Looking forward to supporting
my friend @DeanHeller’s campaign
for U.S. Senate, keeping up the fight
for what’s right for Nevada.”
Democrats, fresh off a tough but
triumphant campaign to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Harry Reid
with former Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, have
fewer obvious choices for a 2018 Senate candidate.
They moved quickly to criticize
their new opponent, calling Heller
“too chicken to run for governor” and
“cravenly silent on Donald Trump’s
rigged Cabinet picks.”
“Dean Heller has no core,” Nevada
State Democratic Party Chari Roberta Lange said. “As Senator, Dean
Heller has skated by as a sub-par and
lazy Washington politician with the
lack of work product to show for it.”

New year means new Nevada
laws on marijuana, mopeds
By Michelle Rindels
Associated Press
The new year is ushering
in some new laws for Nevadans. Here’s a look at what’s
new on the books for 2017:
RECREATIONAL
MARIJUANA
Recreational marijuana
use for people 21 and over
becomes legal in Nevada on
Jan. 1, after Nevada voters
approved a ballot measure
in November.
But authorities emphasize
that consumption is not allowed in public places and
should be done at home. Using pot in public is a misdemeanor that carries a fine of
up to $600.
Driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
It’s also illegal to possess
more than one ounce of marijuana or one-eighth of an
ounce of concentrated marijuana.
Retail dispensaries are
not yet licensed to sell pot
for recreational use and can
only provide their products to people with valid
medical marijuana cards.
Officials from the Nevada
Department of Taxation,
which is crafting regulations for recreational marijuana businesses, has until
2018 to license retail dispensaries but said it’s aiming to get that done by the
summer.
Question 1 called for FBI
background checks on private party gun sales and
passed by less than a percentage point. But the FBI
informed the state in midDecember that it wants Nevada to conduct the checks
because the state databases
are more comprehensive.
The Nevada Attorney
General’s Office released
an opinion Wednesday
saying the ballot measure
doesn’t give state agencies
the authority to conduct the
checks.
Proponents
of
background checks, including
Democratic leaders in the
Nevada Senate, said they’ll
explore whether any legislation can get the background
checks going.
Republican Gov. Brian
Sandoval vetoed a bill in 2013
that would have imposed
similar requirements.
MOPED REGISTRATION
Moped owners must register their vehicles with the
DMV or face a citation in the
new year, thanks to a law
passed in 2015 that aims to
stop scooter thieves.
Democratic state Sen. Mo
Denis led the charge, saying
hundreds of scooters are
stolen each year, but owners
have no easy way of proving
the vehicles belong to them
and often can’t get them back
from impound lots.
Moped owners must
bring their vehicles to the
DMV to determine the vehicle identification number
and verify whether the vehicle is a moped or a motorcycle. Mopeds don’t require
a motorcycle-specific driver’s license, insurance or a
helmet, while motorcycles
do.
One-time fees for registration are about $60.
TROOPER BODY
CAMERAS
A new law effective Jan. 1
requires all Nevada Highway Patrol officers who
regularly interact with the
public to wear body cameras.
State legislators passed a
bill in 2015 that seeks to hold
both officers and the public
accountable if their encounters go awry. They approved
$1.3 million to get the initiative up and running.
The law defines the recordings as a public record
but specifies that people
who want to see it must
request it on a per-incident basis. Legislators also
called on the highway patrol to develop policies that
would protect the privacy
of people in their homes
and those who are trying
to report a crime anonymously.

Hoard of gold coins found at Lovelock Chinatown
By Dennis Cassinelli
There are countless stories
about lost or buried treasure
with gold, silver and other
valuable items in Nevada
history. Most of these are
legends that may or may not
have any basis in fact. The
following story is one of the
rare cases where a real treasure was found when there
was no previous knowledge
that it even existed.
During my highway construction inspecting days,
I spent several seasons
working in Lovelock, Nevada. This northern Nevada ranching community
marked the beginning of the
dreaded Forty Mile Desert
for the emigrants headed
to California in 1849. It became a watering and fueling center for the Central
Pacific Railroad in 1869. In
more modern times, when I
worked there, the Interstate
80 Freeway was being constructed along the south side
of town.
There was once a Chinatown in Lovelock where
the local Chinese lived and
operated small businesses
such as restaurants, gaming
houses and laundries. Many
of these people had come to
the area years before to work
on the railroads and mining.
By 1975, when the Interstate
80 freeway was being built
along the south side of town,
many of the original Chinese
population of the area had
either moved away or been
relocated. It was the dream
of many of the Orientals to
work long and hard enough
to earn money to eventually
return to their homeland.
Freeway
construction
took out a large area of town
south of Amherst Avenue.
This was the area where
the local Chinatown was located. If you are traveling on
I-80 and exit at Main Street
by Macdonalds, you will
find Amherst Avenue and
a small, narrow community
park between the freeway
ramp and Amherst. This
is where the old Chinese
houses and businesses were
torn down to be replaced by
the park.
Before demolition of the
houses, NDOT conducted
an archaeological study of
the old buildings. When the
archaeologists searched the
three buildings being studied, they found an amazing
cache of gold, silver, tokens
and oriental coins. Since
the property had been purchased by the State of Nevada for the construction
project, the collection became the property of the Nevada State Museum.
Eugene Hattori, Curator of
Anthropology at the Nevada
State Museum, has provided
me with a copy of the study
done by the archaeologists
of this 1975 discovery. Hattori
was the archaeologist who
excavated the 900 Carson
City coin dies I discovered at
the old mint building in 1999.
He occasionally has a showing of the Lovelock collection, one of which I attended.
The collection consists
of 211 American, Chinese,
Annamese and Japanese
coins and 4 American trade
tokens. Most of the coins
were found in three different structures, with all of
the gold coins being found
in one house. The house had
a cellar, common in homes
of that era. When the archaeologist searched the
cellar, he discovered a jar
hidden under the floor. The
jar contained 112 American
gold pieces that was likely
the savings of someone who
passed away, never revealing his secret.
The gold coins ranged in
age from 1874 to 1910. This indicates the owner must have
died after 1910. There were
21 five dollar gold pieces, 11
ten dollar gold pieces and
80 twenty dollar gold pieces.
The face value of the gold
coins was $1865.00. In today’s market, the collection
could be worth in excess of
$200,000.
Most of the gold coins were
minted in San Francisco. A
few were minted in Philadelphia and there was one 1892
five dollar gold piece that
was minted in Carson City.
The largest number of the
coins show dates between
1897 and 1910.
Nearly 90 Chinese and
other oriental coins found in
the other two structures on
the site indicated they may
have been businesses catering to the Orientals, such
as gaming establishments.
There were many Chinese
“cash” coins with square
holes, that were often used
as gaming tokens. Many of
the Chinese cash coins are
very old and can be dated
from 1662 to 1908.
There were about 50
United States pennies, nickels, dimes and one 1889-O
silver dollar found on the
site. There was one trade
token from San Francisco,
one from the Owl Bar in
Lovelock, one from the Crystal Saloon in Sparks and one
from the Commercial Hotel
in Elko.

Voluntary lead testing available
for Nevada elementary schools
sparks crime news
The Nevada Division of Environmental
Protection has secured U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency funding to begin a voluntary testing program for Nevada elementary
schools.
Grant funding will cover laboratory analytical costs to initiate drinking water sampling
in all 408 Nevada public schools (including
public charter schools) with a Kindergarten
or Pre-K program. In the event that an old
drinking water fountain or old culinary fixture is contributing lead to school drinking
water, the grant also provides funding for
replacement of fixtures until the funds are
depleted.
“Nevada’s naturally hard water helps prevent a lead problem in many areas and overall
compliance with the lead action level is excel-

lent,” said Jennifer Carr, Deputy Administrator of NDEP. “However, old plumbing and
fixtures can potentially contribute lead and
copper to drinking water. This funding will
help our schools gather important information about their drinking water.”
Tests conducted at Lyon County’s Dayton
Elementary School this fall showed that all
samples taken from water fountains and fixtures had lead and copper levels that were
not detectable, or were well below the NDEP
action levels for drinking water. In the coming months, the NDEP will reach out to each
school district to discuss the details of the
program and seek participation.

Boys hoops storylines to watch in New Year
First-year coach Joe Genung knew
he had his work cut out for him when
he took the job in the offseason. He’s
the third coach in as many years and
has been handed the responsibility
of creating culture where there currently isn’t one.
The Raiders weren’t going to come
out swinging, although they did win
their opener in thrilling fashion, 6461 over Damonte.
Seniors Jeremy Ramos and Lincoln Turner, as well as sophomore
Matt Williams, provide a solid
foundation to build on. They can’t
do it alone though. A couple other
players need to become consistent,
forcing opposing teams to remain
honest.

The Reed, Spanish Springs and
Sparks boys basketball teams enter
2017 with varying degrees of expectation.
Here are the storylines to watch
for the Cougars, Raiders and Railroaders:
Spanish Springs Cougars:
Can they get it done?
The goal for this team is pretty
simple. Win the program’s first regional title.
That’s how talented this bunch
is.
Josh Prizina and Korbin Marcum
provide plenty of playmaking ability
in the frontcourt. Marcus Loadholt,
Jalen Townsell, Bryce DeLong and
Justus Eaglesmith make up what
may be the most dangerous backcourt in the 4A North.
All of the above players mentioned
are seniors. Experience tends to pay
off come tournament time in February.
The Cougars passed their first true
regional test two weeks ago when
they handled Galena at home, 5842. They also went to Carson, the
defending regional champ, and lowered the boom, 66-41.
The next big test looms on Friday
at Bishop Manogue. Spanish Springs
fell to the Miners early in December
in the Wild West Shootout.
So, can they get it done? The talent
is there.

can Matt Longland do?

Reed Raiders: Can they get
in?
Marcus Loadholt floats to the rim for a layup in this season’s home win
over Galena. Loadholt is one of the larger reasons Spanish Springs is in
legitimate contention for the first regional title in program history.
Reed is not going to compete for
the regional title this winter.
However, the Raiders are in contention for what would likely be the
fourth and final playoff spot in the
High Desert League.
Spanish Springs, Reno and McQueen are likely out of reach, but
if the Raiders can get past Hug and

suffered just their second defeat of
the season.

Roadrunners fell to 5-6.

Coach Dan Schreiber knew lack
of size would be an obstacle this season.
To counter, he planned to implement an incredibly fast tempo while
using most of his bench to remain
fresh. It’s yet to gain traction.
Sparks has stumbled to a 1-11 start.
At just 0-3 in 3A North play, Sparks
has plenty of time to get itself in contention for one of the region’s six
playoff spots.
The most exciting player on the
team, without a doubt, has been
senior Matt Longland. Longland
is well on his way to earning firstteam all-league accolades, averaging
nearly 15 points per game – six points
more than the team’s second-leading
scorer.
Longland accounted for nearly
half his team’s offensive production
in Thursday’s 49-41 loss to Hug, finishing with 19 points.
In a season that’s already growing gloomy, Longland is sure to be a
bright spot.

Many complained about
the year that was 2016.
Nevada gave its fans one
more thing to gripe about on
New Year’s Eve, blowing a
10-point second-half lead in
Fresno.
The Wolf Pack played its
worst game of the season,
other than the opener at St.
Mary’s, and wore its first
Mountain West loss of the
season, 77-76, on the road
to a Bulldog team that will
endure its share of struggles
this winter.
Nevada (12-3, 1-1) committed 17 turnovers in the loss
that snapped a seven-game
winning streak, none more
costly than the last one inside the final minute that led
to a transition dunk, breaking a 73-73 tie and putting
Fresno (9-5, 1-1) in front for
good.
Cam Oliver loosely tried
to hand the ball off to Marcus Marshall, but Jaron
Hopkins jumped between
the two and went the other
way for what proved to be
game-winning dunk.
Fresno outscored Nevada 21-8 off turnovers and
abused the Pack in the paint,
where it outscored its guests
by a staggering total of 50-16.
Once a brutal three-point
shooting team, Nevada is
greatly improved from beyond the arc but relied too
heavily on the outside shot
in defeat. The Wolf Pack did
hit 13-of-31 from deep, good
for a 42 percent clip. They
didn’t fall late, however.
After Lindsey Drew buried a triple with 11 minutes
left to give Nevada its largest
lead of the afternoon, 61-51,
Nevada missed seven of its
next nine from downtown.
The brick session spurred
an 18-5 Fresno run, propelling the Bulldogs in front,
69-66, with six minutes left.
The game was tied four
more times before Hopkins’
steal and dunk essentially
put it away. Nevada again
turned it over on its following possession and Paul
Watson went to the line and
stretched the lead to four

Sky is not falling
for Nevada – yet
L
et’s call it like it is. Nevada suffered the dreaded “bad loss”
on Saturday at Fresno.
The Bulldogs simply are not
a very good basketball team.
Before the win over Nevada, here’s
the list of Fresno’s wins: University of
Texas-San Antonio (69-66, at home),
Lamar (at home), Oregon State (a team
Nevada beat by 25, 63-58), Menlo (an
NAIA school, by 13), Drake (by two in
overtime), Cal Poly, Holy Names, and
Pacific (in overtime).
The powerhouse that isn’t Lamar is
the only team on that list with a winning record, at 8-5, unless you include
also 8-5 Menlo, but the Oaks aren’t
even an NCAA program. Texas-San
Antonio is 6-8, Oregon State is 4-11,
Drake is 3-11, Cal Poly is 5-9, Holy
names is 1-11 – at the Div. II level, and
Pacific is 6-9.
As soft as Fresno’s non-conference
schedule was, it still wore some of its
own bad losses.
Some “concerning” defeats were
to Prairie View A&M, at home (the
Panthers are 3-11 this season) and to
Bakersfield.
The Bulldogs entered Saturday’s
contest with an RPI of 197. The Wolf
Pack entered with an RPI of 33 (it now
sits at 44).
So there it is. There is no arguing.
It was a bad loss. Nevada’s margin of
error is so small regarding its NCAA
Tournament aspirations it can’t afford
such defeats it did a stellar job avoiding in non-conference play.
The Mountain West has taken a
plunge in recent years and become
a one-bid conference. That could
change this year, but it won’t be more
than two teams, and the head-scratching loss certainly smears the Pack’s
resume.
Those things happen though. Regardless of talent level and/or coaching, it’s too hard for teams to be at
their best night in and night out – especially over the course a five-month
season. Playing on the road, on a
holiday, in a place like Fresno, against
a rival only adds to the difficulty.
Pack
continued from Page 8
from behind the arc.
Leland King, another transfer,
recorded his first double-double in a
Nevada uniform. He scored 13 points
on 6-of-10 shooting to go along with 12
rebounds.
9
Nevada was not
going to run the
table in conference
play. The travel
schedule is too
tough and there is
too much parity
in the Mountain
nathan shoup
West. A 14-4 record
sports talk
would be a brilliant
run. It would put
Nevada in contention for the regular
season title and at 26 wins heading
into the Mountain West Tournament.
If anything, the New Year’s Eve result provided a wakeup call. If Nevada
didn’t already know, it is undoubtedly
now aware it can’t pick and choose
the nights it wants to show up. Not in
this conference. Not with an undermanned rotation that went seven deep
on Saturday.
Everything this team has planned
still lies ahead of it. The loss, although
deflating, does not extinguish Nevada’s hopes of returning to March Madness for the seventh time in program
history, and for the first time since
2007.
We will quickly learn about this
team’s resilience after the gut punch in
Fresno. Nevada hosts San Diego State
(8-5, 0-1) on Wednesday then goes to
New Mexico (9-5, 2-0) and Wyoming
(11-4, 1-1).
If the Wolf Pack wants to assert
itself as the team to beat in the Mountain West, here is its shot. It can use
the loss as motivation, or it can use it
as an excuse as it preps for the defining stretch of the season.
Chatter about the NCAA Tournament hasn’t stopped since Nevada
won the CBI last year. We’ll find out if
that conversation is justified over the
next three games.
Not all “bad losses” have to be bad.

D.J. Fenner (14 points) and Jordan

In a scary first-half moment, freshman Josh Hall was taken off the court
on a stretcher and was sent to the hospital. He drew contact on a breakaway
dunk attempt and appeared to land on
his neck.
Nevada never trailed in the win, leading by as much as 26.

of their four contests.
The most impressive performance came in the opener, handling
a talented Foothill team, 75-42.

The undefeated start to the season ended last week with losses in
two of the first three in San Diego’s

Reed capped the run on Wednesday with a 51-40 win over Lowry,
last year’s 3A North champ, at
McQueen.
Last week: 3
4. McQueen Lancers (10-4,

Question 1 has been impaled on a
Catch-22.
You remember Question 1, don’t
you? It was on all the ballots in Nevada and passed with a mere 50.45
percent of the vote, failing in every
county except Clark. It requires
almost all private sales or transfers
of firearms to be cleared by a criminal background check. Failure to
comply would result in up to a year
in jail and a $2,000 fine.
But Attorney General Adam
Laxalt’s office has opined that the
drafters of Question 1 were too
smart for their own good and created a law that cannot, at this time,
be enforced, because the federal
agency that is specifically required
by the law to carry out said background checks refuses to do so.
The ballot summary stated: “The
background check would be conducted using the National Instant
Criminal Background Check System (NICS) administered by the
Federal Bureau of Investigations
(FBI), and the federally-licensed
dealer would be able to charge a
reasonable fee for conducting the
background check and facilitating
the firearm transfer between unlicensed persons.”
But earlier this month the official
in charge of the FBI’s criminal
background check system sent
the state a letter saying his office
would not conduct those background checks because Nevada
is one of the many states that has
entered into a sort of mutual aid
pact in which the state becomes the
Point of Contact for background
checks. The state Department of
Public Safety is given access to the
NICS data bank and uses that and
its own resources to conduct background checks for firearm sales.
The head of NICS said a state law
cannot require a federal agency to
expend resources and it will not.
Since the law specifies that background checks must be conducted
through the NICS, the Department
of Public Safety is prohibited from
conducting the background check,
the AG opinion states.

The horror of ‘The Blog Age’
S
o, I’m bored on a Saturday
morning. Should be exercising. Instead, I’m channel
surfing, and I stumble on the
movie “George A. Romero’s Diary of
the Dead” (2007.)
I am SO not recommending this
film. But I do have to give it high
marks for Bad Horror Film Providing A Stage For Apt, Timely Social
Commentary. Specifically, Mr.
Romero revisits the recipe of his cult
classic “Night of the Living Dead”
(now that’s a great horror movie!)
so he can critically investigate this
modern world of media, instant
and continuous communication of
banality, ready delusion, self-flattery
and paranoia.
Perhaps today Romero would include the most recent media metastasis: The Fake News.
Put simply, living an actual human
life and authentically participating
in actual, authentic relationships is
NOT the same as obsessive, voyeuristic peeping of media feeds or nearcompulsive, exhibitionist recording
and exposing of … everything. Anything. And the latter is changing us.
In some disturbing ways.
Thomas de Zengotita describes this
cultural phenomena sans zombies in
his 2005 book “Mediated.” We more
and more play-act our lives rather
than live our lives, he says. We have
less and less ability or even particular
need to note the difference between
reality and virtual reality.
It is one thing not to know the difference between truth and untruth.
It is another thing entirely not to
care about the difference (see the
2016 Presidential Election.)
Back to Romero’s movie …
As zombies lurch around eating
everyone, male protagonist Jason
faithfully and courageously stands
guard over his recharging video
camera. Romero means for us, I
presume, to argue backwards from
there regarding our emerging dys-
topian values.
Later, female
protagonist
Debra, Jason’s
girlfriend,
dares to be angry with Jason
for filming the
mayhem as
Steven Kalas
opposed to dohuman matters
ing something
useful about it.
Debra, again I presume, is the depiction of a cultural artifact. To wit:
a human being with actual, moral
expectations of self and others.
As the credits roll, Debra narrates:
“The more voices there are, the more
spin there is. The truth becomes that
much harder to find. In the end, it’s
all just noise.”
You just don’t expect gripping
profundity popping out of the middle
of a cheesy horror film. And it pushes
me over the edge. I can’t dodge this
any longer. Pornography is no longer
the most obscene consequence of the
Age of Media and Internet. Shameless self-importance combined with
willing delusion wins the prize.
Take blogging, for example. Blogging is all the rage. Everyone has
a voice. About everything, it turns
out. Everyone has something to say.
Everyone should be heard. All the
time, in fact. And it’s worse than
“just noise.” It’s mind-numbing.
Exhausting. I keep feeling like I’m
trapped in my Aunt Edna’s living
room, forced to watch 106 Kodak
Carousel racks of slides from their
trip to the Holy Land.
Okay, I admit I don’t have an Aunt
Edna, but, wanna know a secret?
None of us is a uniquely fascinating human being in our day-to-day
personal lives. Funny thing, I don’t
know when or how this got to be a
secret. It was once common knowledge that human beings are rather
ordinary.
But the Age of Media changed all
that. It’s not enough that your heart
is filled with joy because your firstborn took his first steps. No. You
gotta upload it on YouTube, because
it never occurs to you that homo
sapien has been bipedaling for a
long, long time. It’s a great personal
moment, yes; but not a particularly
compelling collective moment.
See, if you keep feeding your
children, that’s what they do. They
stand upright and walk. Later, they
ask for money. Film that and put it
on YouTube.
Another radical observation:
While it’s true that everyone has a
voice, it’s NOT true that everyone
has something to say. And no one
has something significant to say
about everything. I’m saying, for
example, just because John Lennon
was a brilliant song-writer in the
best band ever doesn’t automatically
qualify him to comment on the Viet
Nam war.
And that’s the point, of course.
There are no qualifications, and zero
personal shame about not having
any.
Epilogue
Last fall, “ABC’s 20/20: In An
Instant” tapped a former patient of
mine for an episode. She asked me
to be a part of the story. On camera.
I paused. Hmm. Hers is an utterly
heroic, human story. It has the potential to encourage and inspire. Yet,
how might this profoundly human
story be marred, distorted or exploited were it to be intruded upon
and interpreted by the media?
I said yes. After several hours of
filming, I got the distinct impression
the director was hoping I’d become
emotional. That I would cry.
Right on cue.

Congress or Trump could undo monument designation
T
here is a word for what
President Obama did this
past week in declaring Gold
Butte a national monument:
dictatorial.
In just more than a year Obama
has unilaterally declared off-limits to productive economic uses 1
million acres of Nevada land — first
the 700,000-acre Basin and Range
National Monument straddling the
border between Lincoln and Nye
counties and now the 300,000-acre
Gold Butte National Monument in
rural northeast Clark County.

Obama’s designation of both Ne-

ignored local elected officials and
nearby residents, even though the
Federal Land Policy Act of 1976 (flippantly know by the acronym Flip Ma)
and the National Environment Policy

University football
E
very time I read about
a new head football
coach at the University of Nevada, I am
reminded of legendary coach
Jim Aiken. Almost everyone
that has played for him has his
Harry Spencer favorite stories about the hardCommentary nosed football mentor. Even
this writer has his share.
If you have the chance to
examine the plaques in the Hall of Fame room
located on the lower level of Legacy Hall, you
should move to those located on the north wall
and almost dead center. There you will see the
scowling visage of the crusty Aiken. He coached
at Nevada from 1939 until 1946 and was inducted
into the Hall in 1979.
Even the picture does not do justice to the rugged
and antagonistic demeanor of Aiken as a coach. As
most athletes, past and present, know full well, when
you go out on the field to compete you usually want
to win for one of two reasons. First, you want to win
because you admire your coach and want to win for
his sake. Secondly, you detest your coach having a
“demean the players” philosophy and you want to
win just to show him that he was wrong. Mainly,
Aiken’s athletes adopted the latter philosophy. Even
before my first contact with him (telephonically) I
had heard stories about how tough he was and how
hard on his charges he could be. One story, related
to me by Harold Hayes, my roommate who secured
my initial scholarship at the U, was about a halftime
locker room meeting during a particular football
game when Aiken was dissatisfied with the play
of one of his halfbacks. Following a spicy pep talk,
Aiken strode over and delivered a solid punch to the
halfback’s nose causing it to bleed profusely. Looking over at a couple of linemen who were shocked by
the event he growled, “That’s motivation!”
My first contact with “Gravel Gertie”, as they nicknamed Aiken because of his loud and gravelly manner of speaking, was around midnight one snowy
evening in January of 1945. I had just landed at the
old Greyhound bus station on Center Street (now
Harrah’s Casino) and there was no one at the station
to meet me. Eight days prior I had boarded my bus at
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for the trip west. After many
connections, missed connections and cancellations
due to wartime priorities, I arrived in Reno several
days behind schedule. Not knowing anything about
the town, I looked up Aiken’s number and dialed the
phone. I was completely unprepared for the booming, irritated voice that answered my ring.
“Who the blank blank is this?” was the first
greeting.
“Why are you calling me at this hour?” was the
second. I quickly explained who I was and asked
him where I should go from the bus station. He told
me to grab a cab, go to Lincoln Hall at the University
and come see him in the morning. I mentioned that
I did not have cab fare for the ride and in that Basso
Profundo voice he roared, “Charge it to me!” and
slammed his phone down. Happily, the cab driver
acquiesced to the charge by noting, “You must be
another one of those ‘tramp athletes’ that Aiken is
always bringing to town!” I noted I probably was.
Finding a bed was a tough proposition after I
succeeded in waking Dean Robert Griffin in order
to let me into the building. The following morning,
after breakfast with my then roommate George
Vucanovich, I made my way to Aiken’s office.
In person, Coach Aiken was even more overbearing. A husky individual with an 18-inch neck and
an even more imposing voice in person, his first

Shirl and Gay’s son, Jim, 50, died as a passenger in a light plane crash near the Reno airport

Now, comes news that Zora Gay Elliker, 80,

Gay and Shirl ran Jewelart in Moana West Center in the mid-1970s and later acquired Tanner’s

Reno’s Antique Mall.
Visitation for Mrs. Elliker will take place from

The final major act of his
eight-year presidency was “seconding” the United Nations
condemnation of Israel for its
settlements in the West Bank. Jake Highton
This was courageous. U.S. Commentary
presidents have constantly
backed Israel whatever its outrages or wrong-doings since its founding in 1948.
Yet undeterred by the U.N. resolution and the
Obama rebuke, Israel arrogantly plunged ahead
with plans to build 5,600 units in the West Bank
and East Jerusalem. Still another outrage.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu bristled at the
Obama remark and angrily blamed Obama for
not vetoing the U.N. resolution. He also warned
against any nation attacking Israel. Netanyahu declared that Israel does not “turn the other cheek.”
Obama should have been far more critical of Israel during his tenure. But the lateness of the hour
was better than never.
As this columnist has written several times, it was
a terrible mistake to create Israel on Palestinian soil.
The Jews have been persecuted for centuries, six
million Jews were slaughtered by the Nazis and
Jews have suffered other horrible atrocities. But it
was hardly wise to carve out the land for Israel in
the Middle East.
Obama’s secretary of state, John Kerry, blasted
Israel in a major address. He rightly accused Netanyahu of sabotaging peace between Israel and Palestine. The blocking of a two-state solution thwarts any
possibility of peace in the turbulent Middle East.
“The status quo is leading toward one state and
perpetual occupation,” Kerry said. “If the choice is
one state, Israel can either be Jewish or democratic.
It cannot be both and will never be at peace.”
But President-elect Donald Trump cheered the
Netanyahu statement. He told Netanyahu to ignore
it. “Stay strong Israel,” he wrote on Twitter. “January 20th is fast approaching.” (Inauguration Day)
Trump, who is wrong about most things, is also
wrong about defying Palestinian rights.
PUBLISHER RIPS OBAMA LEGACY
The Obama legacy, however, got some bad jolts
from John MacArthur, publisher of Harper’s
Magazine. His book, “The Outrageous Barriers
to Democracy in America,” has an intriguing title
and even more intriguing subtitle, “Or, why a Progressive Presidency Is Impossible.”
Many Americans believed Obama might be a
reformer, doing more than “just rearranging the
furniture.”
But not so. As Howard Dean, Democratic National Chairman, presciently warned us in 2004
with his angry denunciation of the Iraq invasion,
the Democrats were warhawks, not peaceniks.
Obama was a warhawk.
He did not withdraw from Iraq as promised. He
did not pull out of Afghanistan as promised.
MacArthur also writes:
• “While Obama destroyed reform, the
fund-raising machines of the Democratic and
Republican parties endlessly sought cash to pay
for TV advertising.
• “Never had an American politician spoken so
many eloquent words about change and done so
little about it.
• “Obama, the first African-American elected

the central function required
by the Act effectuates an unconditional ban, at present,
on all private firearm sales
or transfers in Nevada,” the
opinion concludes. “Criminal conviction, the only
method by which the Act
may be enforced according
to its terms, is the ostensible
penalty for selling or transferring a firearm in violation
of this unintended ban. As
a matter of due process, this
makes the Act unenforceable as a criminal law. The
Nevada Supreme Court long
ago adopted the doctrine
that the law does not require
impossible acts. When a
law imposes a requirement
that cannot be performed,
a party is relieved of compliance until the obstacle to
performance is lifted.”
Catch-22.
The law specifies one
and only one method for
conducting criminal background checks, thus prohibiting the state from doing so.
Therefore, the law is unenforceable.
In his book of the same
name this is how Joseph
Heller explained Catch-22:
A doctor said a certain pilot
could be grounded from
flying World War II combat
missions because he was
crazy, but first he would
have to ask to be grounded,
which would indicate he is
sane, because only an insane
person would willingly fly
dangerous missions.
“There was only one catch

specified that a concern for
one’s safety in the face of
dangers that were real and
immediate was the process
of a rational mind,” Heller
wrote. “Orr was crazy and
could be grounded. All he
had to do was ask; and as
soon as he did, he would no
longer be crazy and would
have to fly more missions.
Orr would be crazy to fly
more missions and sane if
he didn’t, but if he was sane
he had to fly them. If he flew
them he was crazy and didn’t
have to; but if he didn’t want
to he was sane and had to.”
Here is how the AG opinion signed by Bureau Chief
Gregory Zunino further
explains it: “Here, similarly,
while the Act imposes a
duty on every Nevadan
who seeks to privately sell
or transfer a firearm, the
Act has also created an
obstacle — wholly beyond
their control or that of the
State itself — that currently
presents them from meeting
that duty. As a consequence,
a law that the voters clearly
intended to impose mere
conditions upon the private
sale or transfer of a firearm
now operates as a total ban,
clearly at odds with the
intent of voters. When criminal penalties are threatened, the doctrine against
requiring impossibilities is
strengthened by due process
and other constitutional
guarantees. It is manifestly
unjust to criminally penalize someone for failing to
perform an act that is impossible to perform.”
We hope this law just
disappears down the rabbit
hole from whence it came.

at his last minute attempt to cement his
environmental legacy by undermining local
control of Nevada’s communities, and damaging our jobs and economy,” Laxalt stated
in a press release.
Sen. Dean Heller said he was terribly
disappointed by Obama’s action, saying such
action should be conducted in an open public process with congressional input.
Retiring Sen. Harry Reid urged Obama to
declare Gold Butte a monument before leaving office no matter what the local residents
thought, and his hand-picked successor,
Catherine Cortez Masto, sent out a tweet
about Obama’s action saying, “We have an
obligation to protect places like Gold Butte.
I’m grateful for President Obama’s dedication to preserving our public lands.
The area’s newly elected Democratic Rep.
Ruben Kihuen was all for the designation.
“As a Nevadan I couldn’t be more thrilled that
President Obama decided recently to give
Gold Butte, Nevada’s piece of the Grand Canyon, the full protection it deserves,” Kihuen
said in a statement. “This newest national
monument designation in Nevada means that
we now have the tools to properly safeguard
Gold Butte’s thousands of awe-inspiring rock
formations, ancient petroglyphs, and rare
wildlife for all Nevadans to enjoy.”
Though resigned to the probability of the
Gold Butte designation, Gov. Brian Sandoval
said he worked to assure the local communities would continue to have access to water
resources. He said he met with the White
House and his staff held follow-up meetings.
“We also worked with the White House
and Department of Interior to ensure Nevada water law is adhered to and that the
Virgin Valley Water District would have
access to its water infrastructure for continued development and maintenance,” the
governor related.

NATION MAGAZINE PILES ON
The Nation magazine recently devoted an
entire hefty issue to the Obama legacy.
Christopher Hayes noted:
• “America elected a black man president and
half the people went out of their minds in anger.
• “The white working class realized that the
American dream is a sham. Then con artist
Obama promised to restore it and the working
class bought the con.”
On Inauguration Day in the Washington
Mall in 2009, Obama delivered an institutional pep talk: “Starting today we must pick
ourselves up, dust ourselves off and begin the
work of remaking America.”
He failed even to try. But he did warmonger, spending trillions on aerial surveillance,
drones, Saudi Arabian weapons and wars in
Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Pakistan and Somalia.
Greg Grandin, New York University history
professor, observed:
“Campaigning in 2008, Obama offered a
there is language referring to “existing”
water rights, meaning that it is unlikely any
new water resources could be developed for
future needs since “no new rights-of-way
shall be authorized within the monument.”
Additionally, the proclamation says no
grazing rights have been permitted on the
land since 1998 and no grazing permits will
be allowed within the monument.
Sandoval tried to be hopeful, ““My priority
was to mitigate any disruption a potential
designation may cause the surrounding private land owners, communities and recreationists. We all share a common goal of enacting smart conservation measures which
help preserve our lands for the use and
enjoyment of all Nevadans. My strong preference is for a more collaborative process
when making such an important designation. I firmly believe our ranchers, environmentalists, and community stakeholders are
the best experts in ensuring Nevada’s lands
are preserved, protected and accessible. I
also believe that with this designation comes
duties, responsibilities and an expectation
that the BLM will properly manage the area
and commit the funds necessary to do so.”
Though the White House blatantly declared that President-elect Donald Trump
cannot undo the creation of this and other
monuments, the Congressional Review
Act allows a simple majority of each house
of Congress to revoke such decisions. It
has rarely been successfully used since the
president who issued the decision can veto
an act of Congress and that takes two-thirds
to override. The difference this time is that
Trump takes office on Jan. 20.
Also Trump could simply rescind the
monument designation, but he has been
waffling on whether locals should have more
say on federal land issues.
Also, the Nevada Washington delegation is
now two-thirds Democrats, who are beholding only to urban Las Vegas.

vision of patriotism, using his own success to
celebrate the country’s meritocracy. He called
that proof of overcoming racial division and
demonstrating our exceptionalism. He recalled Madeleine Albright as the first woman
to become secretary of state. He recalled her
labeling the U.S. as the ‘indispensable nation.’ ”
Siva Vaidhyanathan, professor of media
studies, University of Virginia, wrote that
Obama while campaigning “spoke the Silicon
Valley tech language until it came to warrantless surveillance. The Blackberry-toting son of
an immigrant professed to share the Valley’s
commitment to open dialogue, open networks,
global connectivity and corporate-speak (‘datadriven decision-making’).”
But Obama embraced warrantless wiretapping by the National Security Agency and its
gathering of foreign intelligence.
Robert Borosage, president of the Institute for
America’s Future, declared that Obama called
himself in 2008 “the transformational president” and “would put us on a fundamentally
different path.” He was not transformational
and he did not seek a different path.
In short, the Obama presidency was marked
by marvelous rhetoric and lofty language but
few deeds.

The Savvy Senior
Dear Savvy
Senior,
What types
of
discounts
are available to
baby boomers,
at what age do
they kick in, and what’s the
best way to go about finding
them?
Almost 50
Dear Almost,
One of the great perks of
growing older in America is
the many discounts that are
available to boomers and seniors.
There are literally thousands of discounts on a wide
variety of products and services including restaurants,
grocery stores, travel and
lodging, entertainment, retail and apparel, health and
beauty, automotive services
and much more. These discounts – typically ranging
between 5 and 25 percent off
– can add up to save you hundreds of dollars each year.
So, if you don’t mind admitting your age, here are some
tips and tools to help you find
the discounts you may be eligible for.
Always Ask
The first thing to know is
that most businesses don’t
advertise them, but many
give senior discounts just for
the asking, so don’t be shy.
You also need to know that
while some discounts are
available as soon as you turn
50, many others may not kick
in until you turn 55, 60, 62 or
65.
Search Online
Because senior discounts
frequently change and can
vary depending on where
you live and the time of the
year, the Internet is the easiest way to help you locate
them.
To do a search, start by visiting SeniorDiscounts.com,
which lists thousands of discounts that you can search
for by city and state, and by
the category you’re interested
in, for free.
You can also look for discounts at TheSeniorList.com,
which provides a large list of
national and regional business chains that offer them,
or you can Google them individually. Just go to Google.
com and type in the business or organization you’re
curious about, followed by
“senior discount” or “senior
discount tickets.”
If you use a smartphone,
another tool is the Sciddy app
(see Sciddy.com) that lets you
search for senior discounts
and can send you alerts when
you’re at an establishment
that offers them.
Join a Club
Another good avenue to
senior discounts is through
membership organizations
like AARP, which offers its
50 and older members a wide
variety of discounts through
affiliate businesses (see
AARPdiscounts.com).
If, however, you’re not the
AARP type, there are other
alternative organizations you
can join that also provide discounts such as The Seniors
Coalition or the American
Seniors Association. Or, for
federal workers, there’s the
National Active and Retired
Federal Employees Association.
Types of Discounts
Here’s an abbreviated rundown of some of the different
types of discounts you can
expect to find.
Restaurants: Senior discounts are common at restau-
rants and fast food establishments – like Burger King,
Chick-fil-A, Subway, Wendy’s, Applebee’s and Golden
Corral – ranging from free/
discounted drinks, to discounts off your total order.
Retailers: Many thrift
stores like Goodwill, and certain retailers like Banana Republic, Kohl’s, Michaels and
Ross stores offer a break to
seniors on certain days of the
week.
Supermarkets: Many locally owned grocery stores
offer senior discount programs, as do some chains
like Albertsons, Kroger, Publix and Fry’s Supermarkets,
which offer some discounts
on certain days of the week
but they vary by location.
Travel: Southwest Airlines
provide the best senior fares
in the U.S. to passengers 65
and older, while Amtrak offers a 15 percent discount and
Greyhound offers 5 percent
off to travelers over 62. Most
car rental companies provide
discounts to customers who
belong to organizations like
AARP. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Carnival cruise
lines offer discount rates to
cruisers 55 and over. And,
most hotels offer senior discounts, usually ranging from
10 to 30 percent.
Entertainment:
Most
movie theaters, museums,
golf courses, ski slopes and
other public entertainment
venues provide reduced
admission to seniors over
60 or 65. And the National
Park Service offers a lifetime
pass for those 62 and up for
$10 (see nps.gov/findapark/
passes.htm).
Send your senior questions to:

encouraged on the 2nd, 3rd
and 4th. You’ll be given an
opportunity to do something
you enjoy, but before you say
yes, find out if it is within
your budget. Discuss your
plans with anyone you are
in a partnership with before
you move forward on the 5th
and 6th. Getting the go-ahead
will give you the freedom to
move forward worry-free.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): On
the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, an emotional situation due to a situation that arises involving an
older friend or relative will
result in reconnecting with
someone from your past. Be
diplomatic, and protect your
possessions and reputation.
A short trip on the 5th and
6th will give you something
to think about regarding
what you do and where you
live.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22):
Personal and professional
partnerships should take top
priority on the 2nd, 3rd and
4th. Find out what you can
do to encourage greater collaboration in order to work
together to reach maximum
growth and greater stability
over the upcoming year. Take
care of matters pertaining to
your personal finances on
the 5th and 6th. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22):
Emotional spending will be
your downfall on the 2nd, 3rd
and 4th. You cannot buy love
or happiness -- both come
from within. Aim to be and
do your best by living within
your means. A change in the
way you feel or relate to a
friend, colleague or your lover
will arise on the 5th and 6th.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov.
21): The 2nd, 3rd and 4th will
be insightful for you if you
discuss your ideas and longterm goals with someone
you love. Change what isn’t
working for you instead of
making due with a situation
that is holding you back. Do
the legwork that will help
you catapult into the lifestyle
that you desire on the 5th and
6th.
SAGITTARIUS
(Nov.
22-Dec. 21): You’ll face opposition from someone who
doesn’t like the choices you
are making on the 2nd, 3rd
and 4th. Be honest about the
way you feel and how you
plan to move forward. Avoid
insult or injury by taking precautions. A change to your
surroundings or the way you
run your home will do you
good on the 5th and 6th.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22Jan. 19): Take a walk down
memory lane on the 2nd, 3rd
and 4th, and you will rediscover dreams that you have
yet to fulfill. Make a point to
get in touch with someone
who shared those aspirations, and see what happens.
Be careful not to make a hasty
decision on the 5th and 6th.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.
18): An opportunity to change
the way you earn your living
will open up on the 2nd, 3rd
and 4th. Before you jump
from one position to another,
make sure the fit suits your financial needs. Negotiate until
it’s worth your while. Someone you have worked with in
the past will offer good advice as well as other options
that should be considered on
the 5th and 6th.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March
20): You’ll be restricted by
someone in an authoritative
position on the 2nd, 3rd and
4th if you use emotional manipulation to get your way.
Do what you can to help others if you want to improve
your reputation and chance
to excel. The dynamics of an
important relationship will
change on the 5th and 6th
if you aren’t willing to compromise or agree to strive for
greater equality.
SUDOKU
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear
only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will
appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name,
the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Secret baptism for bay is scheme that’s all wet
DEAR ABBY: My niece
has a 1-year-old son. Neither my niece nor the baby’s
father is religious, and they
have chosen not to have the
baby baptized. My sister,
the baby’s grandmother,
while not wanting to impose her beliefs on the parents, comes from a generation when even couples who
were not demonstrably religious usually had their baby
baptized.
I know it would comfort
my sister to know this ancient ceremony had been
performed. Since my sister
watches the little boy at her
house, would it be wrong for
us to organize an informal
baptism -- just holy water
and a couple of prayers? We
don’t feel we need to have
an officiant of any religion
present and, of course, we
would not tell the baby’s parents. Would this be appropriate? -- MORTIFIED IN
MONTANA
DEAR
MORTIFIED:
No, it would not. If you were
sure that it would be, you
wouldn’t have written to me
about it. My advice is not
to do ANYTHING like this
behind the parents’ backs,
because if you do, there will
be hell to pay. Consider this:
Not all denominations baptize their members as infants.
DEAR ABBY: Please
dear abby
by jeanne phillips
post my message for people
to be more considerate and
nonjudgmental about their
“help.” I am a housekeeper
by choice. I have office skills,
massage therapy skills and
many talents, but I have noticed that clients seem to have
a preconceived idea of who I
am.
I am not someone who is
money-driven. I am also not
uneducated. I am a person
who enjoys helping others,
no matter what I may be doing. What I do for a living is
not who I am.
I have been treated disrespectfully. People who have
housekeepers -- beware. We
“might” be doing a sociological study on how people
treat the help. Wasn’t there
a movie about that? Be kind
to each other, people! -- THE
HELP
DEAR HELP: What
you have experienced isn’t
a problem faced only by
housekeepers. It is something that many service
industry workers encounter all too often. Perhaps it
happens because some people were never taught that
inside the uniform is a person with real feelings, and
that everyone deserves to be
treated with respect.
DEAR ABBY: After a
year together, my boyfriend
recently proposed. We plan
to wed in two years. During this time, he intends to
move into my home so we
can save for the wedding.
My parents, however, are
completely against our living together before we get
married.
Abby, I’m 30 years old
and so is my fiance. I own
my own home and my boyfriend currently rents. My
parents are very traditional
and may not help with the
wedding if we move in together. We can’t afford to
pay for much if we don’t do
it and save. On top of that,
we are excited to start our
lives together. Do I honor
my parents’ wishes or do
what I feel is right for me
and my fiance? -- ROCK
AND A HARD PLACE
DEAR ROCK AND A
HARD PLACE: You and
your fiance are both 30,
which means you are well
into adulthood. Don’t you
think it’s time for you both to
start becoming and thinking
like independent adults? By
that I mean deciding which
is more important to you -living your lives the way your
parents want, or the way you
want.
DEAR ABBY: My mother-in-law passed away two
years ago from lung cancer. My father-in-law hasn’t

DEAR DON’T WANT
TO LIE: Of course you are
right. Your father-in-law appears to be grieving deeply
for his wife, and he may not
be able to work through it
without the aid of a grief support group or a therapist.
You should also be aware
that a severe emotional shock
can sometimes cause the
onset of dementia in older

In the Matter of the Parental Rights as to,
EMMA ROSE WOODS,
A MINOR CHILD.
ORDER FOR PUBLICATION OF NOTICE
OF HEARING (JOHN DOE)
Upon reading the Second Amended Verified
Petition for Termination of Parental rights
filed by Petitioners, BRIAN and JENNIFER
WOODS, and from other good and sufficient cause shown, the Court finds that it
is probable that JOHN DOE may reside in
Washoe County, Nevada and that notice of
the hearing cannot be served upon JOHN
DOE person within the State of Nevada. The
Court further finds from said Verified Petition
For Termination of Parental Rights that a
cause of action exists in favor of Petitioner
and against JOHN DOE that JOHN DOE is a
necessary and proper party and that the last
known address of JOHN DOE was Washoe
County Nevada. The Court further finds that
the Sparks Tribune is a newspaper regularly
published in the County of Washoe, State of
Nevada is the newspaper most likely to give
notice to JOHN DOE of pendency of the suit.
NOW, THEREFORE, it is hereby ORDERED
that the Notice of Hearing in the suit be
served on JOHN DOE by publication thereof
in the above-named newspaper, and that
said publication be made for a period of four
(4) weeks and at least once a week during
said time; and that Service of Process upon
JOHN DOE shall be deemed legally effective
after the completion of publication.
