St. Matthew’s Staff Rev. Orin Cummings Rector Sherry Minzey Admin. Assistant Dear Saints, Greetings in Jesus’ name! Ron Stockton Music Director Jim Minzey Sexton Officers Mark Muller Senior Warden Yael Abouhalkah Junior Warden David Macey Treasurer Linda Gerding Secretary Dave Chullino George Miller Clerk of the Works Service Times 4:00 p.m. Saturday Service Rite II 11:00 a.m. Sunday Service Rite II It has been unbearably hot and dry this summer that a believer made a point of telling me that she has retreated to escape the heat and only goes out for grocery, doctor’s appointment or church activity. Perhaps this is a time to retreat indoors, but not ignore the outdoors. When my wife suggested we go on a retreat, I hesitated. I knew she meant a vacation and I understood that to be spending time away from home and financial expenses, hence my reluctance. However, with hindsight I am glad I did agree because I had fun at amusement parks, visited with old friends, learned about space exploration, and worshiped at Calvary Chapel—a non-denominational church—in Melbourne, FL. Each was a unique experience of God’s loving presence in the world, but I received the most awe-inspiring message not from human inventions or creativity. It was the simple things of life that we take for granted that spoke most clearly to me such as a rainbow, the vast ocean, the starlit sky, the sound of waves coming and going, playful dolphins in the ocean, the movement of the earth that became noticeable from each sunrise and sunset, people, especially my sons interacting with nature, and of course generosity of spirit. All of a sudden the heat wave became bearable owing to these distractions that redirected my attention to God, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. From God we learn about self-care for He “blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested” (Gen. 2:3). I ask you to listen for God’s voice in the heat wave: “Come rest a while” (Mk. 6:30). Stop and enjoy the simple things of life and be open and receptive to what God is up to in the world like the generosity of Carl and Cheryl who opened their Florida home to my family for self-care, the renewal of body, mind and spirit. After last year off, we will offer mums in 2 gallon pots in vibrant colors of purple, white, yellow, red and orange. Orders will be taken following the Saturday and Sunday services from August 13 - September 4. Please pick-up your plants on September 24 and 25. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to make contributions to charitable organizations. S.O.S. ladies, we need help on Saturday, August 20 at 10:00 a.m. Sherry Minzey is creating 100 bingo cards for our party. Each card needs to be checked to be sure there are no duplications on bingo numbers. This is important to eliminate multiple winners in our final grand prize blackout game. Our next bi-monthly meeting is August 6 at 1:30 p.m. We will be planning for our next event, so your attendance is vital. Blessings, Nancy Anderson E.C.W. President Bishop Marty Field’s official visitation of St. Matthew’s will be on August 28. Following the service everyone is invited to attend the reception in the Parish Hall. 2 RAYTOWN SUMMER LUNCH MINISTRY On Wednesday morning June 29th members from St. Matthew’s joined with others in the Community to “re-sort and re-package” food items for the “Raytown Summer Lunch Ministry Program”. Large packages of cookies, chips, pretzels, napkins, paper bags, etc. were divided, and some put into Ziploc baggies. When school ends for the summer, this program steps up and prepares a healthy sack lunch for children who are on the free or reduced lunch program. Volunteers from area churches, the school District, and other organizations including Retired teachers, the Police & Fire Depts., City Hall, and the Chamber of Commerce, unite to share the love of Jesus by feeding hungry children in Raytown. Last year it served nearly 400 children a day for 30 days, totaling about 11,000 lunches, delivered to an area where they live. Preparing lunches for delivery begins on July 5th at Raytown Christian Church. If you can volunteer to help put lunches together 1 day a week or just 1 day during the month of July in the mornings from 10:00 to 11:15, just show up and you will be told how you can help. Deliveries go from 11:30 to about 1:00. Service & Outreach would like to ask all of St. Matthew’s Parish Family to keep this most important program in their prayers. Thank you for your support.
